امثال 27

1 درباره فردای خود با غرور صحبت نکن، زیرا نمی‌دانی چه پیش خواهد آمد.

Boast not thyself of to-morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

2 هرگز از خودت تعریف نکن؛ بگذار دیگران از تو تعریف کنند.

Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

3 حمل بار سنگ و ماسه سخت است، اما تحمل ناراحتیهایی که شخص نادان ایجاد می‌کند، از آن هم سختتر است.

A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's vexation is heavier than they both.

4 حسادت خطرناک‌تر و بی‌رحمتر از خشم و غضب است.

Wrath is cruel, and anger is overwhelming; but who is able to stand before jealousy?

5 سرزنش آشکار از محبت پنهان بهتر است.

Better is open rebuke than love that is hidden.

6 زخم دوست بهتر از بوسهٔ دشمن است.

Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are importunate.

7 شکم سیر حتی از عسل کراهت دارد، اما برای شکم گرسنه هر چیز تلخی شیرین است.

The full soul loatheth a honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

8 کسی که از خانه‌اش دور می‌شود همچون پرنده‌ای است که از آشیانه‌اش آواره شده باشد.

As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.

9 مشورت صمیمانهٔ یک دوست همچون عطری خوشبو، دلپذیر است.

Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart; so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.

10 دوست خود و دوست پدرت را هرگز ترک نکن، و وقتی در تنگی هستی سراغ برادرت نرو؛ همسایهٔ نزدیک بهتر از برادر دور می‌تواند به تو کمک کند.

Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity; better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

11 پسرم، حکمت بیاموز و دل مرا شاد کن تا بتوانم جواب کسانی را که مرا سرزنش می‌کنند، بدهم.

My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that taunteth me.

12 عاقل خطر را پیش‌بینی می‌کند و از آن اجتناب می‌نماید، ولی جاهل به سوی آن می‌رود و خود را گرفتار می‌کند.

A prudent man seeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the thoughtless pass on, and are punished.

13 از کسی که نزد تو ضامن شخص غریبی می‌شود، گرو بگیر.

Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; and hold him in pledge that is surety for an alien woman.

14 اگر صبح زود با صدای بلند برای دوستت دعای خیر کرده، او را از خواب بیدار کنی، دعای تو همچون لعنت خواهد بود.

He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.

15 غرغرهای زن بهانه‌گیر مثل چک‌چک آب در روز بارانی است؛

A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike;

16 همان‌طور که نمی‌توان از وزیدن باد جلوگیری کرد، و یا با دستهای چرب چیزی را نگه داشت، همان‌طور هم محال است بتوان از غرغر چنین زنی جلوگیری کرد.

He that would hide her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand betrayeth itself.

17 همان‌طور که آهن، آهن را می‌تراشد، دوست نیز شخصیت دوستش را اصلاح می‌کند.

Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

18 هر که درختی بپروراند از میوه‌اش نیز خواهد خورد و هر که به اربابش خدمت کند پاداش خواهد گرفت.

Whoso keepeth the fig-tree shall eat the fruit thereof; and he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.

19 همان‌طور که انسان در آب، صورت خود را می‌بیند، در وجود دیگران نیز وجود خویش را مشاهده می‌کند.

As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.

20 همان‌طور که دنیای مردگان از بلعیدن زندگان سیر نمی‌شود، خواسته‌های انسان نیز هرگز ارضا نمی‌گردد. (Sheol h7585)

The nether-world and Destruction are never satiated; so the eyes of man are never satiated. (Sheol h7585)

21 طلا و نقره را به‌وسیلۀ آتش می‌آزمایند، ولی انسان را از عکس‌العملش در برابر تعریف و تمجید دیگران می‌توان شناخت.

The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold, and a man is tried by his praise.

22 اگر احمق را در داخل هاون هم بکوبی حماقتش از او جدا نمی‌شود.

Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar with a pestle among groats, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.

23 مال و دارایی زود از بین می‌رود و تاج و تخت پادشاه تا ابد برای نسل او باقی نمی‌ماند. پس تو با دقت از گله و رمه‌ات مواظبت کن،

Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds;

24

For riches are not for ever; and doth the crown endure unto all generations?

25 زیرا وقتی علوفه چیده شود و محصول جدید به بار آید و علف کوهستان جمع‌آوری شود،

When the hay is mown, and the tender grass showeth itself, and the herbs of the mountains are gathered in;

26 آنگاه از پشم گوسفندانت لباس تهیه خواهی کرد، از فروش بزهایت زمین خواهی خرید

The lambs will be for thy clothing, and the goats the price for a field.

27 و از شیر بقیهٔ بزها تو و خانواده و کنیزانت سیر خواهید شد.

And there will be goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household; and maintenance for thy maidens.
