۱ 1 ای برادران آیا نمی دانید (زیرا که با عارفین شریعت سخن می‌گویم ) که مادامی که انسان زنده است، شریعت بر وی حکمرانی دارد؟

KNOW ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law, ) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?

۲ 2 زیرا زن منکوحه برحسب شریعت به شوهرزنده بسته است، اما هرگاه شوهرش بمیرد، ازشریعت شوهرش آزاد شود.

For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.

۳ 3 پس مادامی که شوهرش حیات دارد، اگر به مرد دیگر پیوندد، زانیه خوانده می‌شود. لکن هرگاه شوهرش بمیرد، از آن شریعت آزاد است که اگر به شوهری دیگرداده شود، زانیه نباشد.

So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

۴ 4 بنابراین، ای برادران من، شما نیز بوساطت جسد مسیح برای شریعت مرده شدید تا خود رابه دیگری پیوندید، یعنی با او که از مردگان برخاست، تا بجهت خدا ثمر آوریم.

Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

۵ 5 زیرا وقتی که در جسم بودیم، هوسهای گناهانی که ازشریعت بود، در اعضای ما عمل می‌کرد تا بجهت موت ثمر آوریم.

For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

۶ 6 اما الحال چون برای آن چیزی که در آن بسته بودیم مردیم، از شریعت آزاد شدیم، بحدی که در تازگی روح بندگی می‌کنیم نه در کهنگی حرف.

But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

۷ 7 پس چه گوییم؟ آیا شریعت گناه است؟ حاشا! بلکه گناه را جز به شریعت ندانستیم. زیراکه شهوت را نمی دانستم، اگر شریعت نمی گفت که طمع مورز.

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

۸ 8 لکن گناه از حکم فرصت جسته، هر قسم طمع را در من پدید آورد، زیرا بدون شریعت گناه مرده است.

But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.

۹ 9 و من از قبل بدون شریعت زنده می‌بودم؛ لکن چون حکم آمد، گناه زنده گشت و من مردم.

For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

۱۰ 10 و آن حکمی که برای حیات بود، همان مرا باعث موت گردید.

And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.

۱۱ 11 زیراگناه از حکم فرصت یافته، مرا فریب داد و به آن مرا کشت.

For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.

۱۲ 12 خلاصه شریعت مقدس است و حکم مقدس و عادل و نیکو.

Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

۱۳ 13 پس آیا نیکویی برای من موت گردید؟ حاشا! بلکه گناه، تا گناه بودنش ظاهر شود. بوسیله نیکویی برای من باعث مرگ شد تا آنکه گناه به‌سبب حکم بغایت خبیث شود.

Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

۱۴ 14 زیرا می‌دانیم که شریعت روحانی است، لکن من جسمانی و زیر گناه فروخته شده هستم،

For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

۱۵ 15 که آنچه می‌کنم نمی دانم زیرا آنچه می‌خواهم نمی کنم بلکه کاری را که از آن نفرت دارم بجامی آورم.

For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.

۱۶ 16 پس هرگاه کاری را که نمی خواهم به‌جا می‌آورم، شریعت را تصدیق می‌کنم که نیکوست.

If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.

۱۷ 17 و الحال من دیگر فاعل آن نیستم بلکه آن گناهی که در من ساکن است.

Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

۱۸ 18 زیرامی دانم که در من یعنی در جسدم هیچ نیکویی ساکن نیست، زیرا که اراده در من حاضر است اماصورت نیکو کردن نی.

For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh, ) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

۱۹ 19 زیرا آن نیکویی را که می‌خواهم نمی کنم، بلکه بدی را که نمی خواهم می‌کنم.

For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

۲۰ 20 پس چون آنچه را نمی خواهم می‌کنم، من دیگر فاعل آن نیستم بلکه گناه که در من ساکن است.

Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

۲۱ 21 لهذا این شریعت را می‌یابم که وقتی که می‌خواهم نیکویی کنم بدی نزد من حاضر است.

I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

۲۲ 22 زیرا برحسب انسانیت باطنی به شریعت خداخشنودم.

For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

۲۳ 23 لکن شریعتی دیگر در اعضای خودمی بینم که با شریعت ذهن من منازعه می‌کند و مرااسیر می‌سازد به آن شریعت گناه که در اعضای من است.

But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

۲۴ 24 وای بر من که مرد شقی‌ای هستم! کیست که مرا از جسم این موت رهایی بخشد؟

O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

۲۵ 25 خدا راشکر می‌کنم بوساطت خداوند ما عیسی مسیح. خلاصه اینکه من به ذهن خود شریعت خدا رابندگی می‌کنم و اما به جسم خود شریعت گناه را.

I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
