| چنانکه برف در تابستان و باران درحصاد، همچنین حرمت برای احمق شایسته نیست. | ۱ 1 |
Like snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not fitting for a fool.
| لعنت، بی‌سبب نمی آید، چنانکه گنجشک در طیران و پرستوک در پریدن. | ۲ 2 |
Like a fluttering sparrow, like a darting swallow, so the undeserved curse doesn’t come to rest.
| شلاق به جهت اسب و لگام برای الاغ، وچوب از برای پشت احمقان است. | ۳ 3 |
A whip is for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the back of fools!
| احمق را موافق حماقتش جواب مده، مباداتو نیز مانند او بشوی. | ۴ 4 |
Don’t answer a fool according to his folly, lest you also be like him.
| احمق را موافق حماقتش جواب بده، مباداخویشتن را حکیم بشمارد. | ۵ 5 |
Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.
| هر‌که پیغامی به‌دست احمق بفرستد، پایهای خود را می‌برد و ضرر خود را می‌نوشد. | ۶ 6 |
One who sends a message by the hand of a fool is cutting off feet and drinking violence.
| ساقهای شخص لنگ بی‌تمکین است، ومثلی که از دهان احمق برآید همچنان است. | ۷ 7 |
Like the legs of the lame that hang loose, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.
| هر‌که احمق را حرمت کند، مثل کیسه جواهر در توده سنگها است. | ۸ 8 |
As one who binds a stone in a sling, so is he who gives honour to a fool.
| مثلی که از دهان احمق برآید، مثل خاری است که در دست شخص مست رفته باشد. | ۹ 9 |
Like a thorn bush that goes into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.
| تیرانداز همه را مجروح می‌کند، همچنان است هر‌که احمق را به مزد گیرد و خطاکاران رااجیر نماید. | ۱۰ 10 |
As an archer who wounds all, so is he who hires a fool or he who hires those who pass by.
| چنانکه سگ به قی خود برمی گردد، همچنان احمق حماقت خود را تکرار می‌کند. | ۱۱ 11 |
As a dog that returns to his vomit, so is a fool who repeats his folly.
| آیا شخصی را می‌بینی که در نظر خودحکیم است، امید داشتن بر احمق از امید بر اوبیشتر است. | ۱۲ 12 |
Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
| کاهل می‌گوید که شیر در راه است، و اسددر میان کوچه‌ها است. | ۱۳ 13 |
The sluggard says, “There is a lion in the road! A fierce lion roams the streets!”
| چنانکه در بر پاشنه‌اش می‌گردد، همچنان کاهل بر بستر خویش. | ۱۴ 14 |
As the door turns on its hinges, so does the sluggard on his bed.
| کاهل دست خود را در قاب فرو می‌برد و ازبرآوردن آن به دهانش خسته می‌شود. | ۱۵ 15 |
The sluggard buries his hand in the dish. He is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.
| کاهل در نظر خود حکیمتر است از هفت مرد که جواب عاقلانه می‌دهند. | ۱۶ 16 |
The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who answer with discretion.
| کسی‌که برود و در نزاعی که به او تعلق ندارد متعرض شود، مثل کسی است که گوشهای سگ را بگیرد. | ۱۷ 17 |
Like one who grabs a dog’s ears is one who passes by and meddles in a quarrel not his own.
| آدم دیوانه‌ای که مشعلها و تیرها و موت رامی اندازد، | ۱۸ 18 |
Like a madman who shoots torches, arrows, and death,
| مثل کسی است که همسایه خود را فریب دهد، و می‌گوید آیا شوخی نمی کردم؟ | ۱۹ 19 |
is the man who deceives his neighbour and says, “Am I not joking?”
| از نبودن هیزم آتش خاموش می‌شود، و ازنبودن نمام منازعه ساکت می‌گردد. | ۲۰ 20 |
For lack of wood a fire goes out. Without gossip, a quarrel dies down.
| زغال برای اخگرها و هیزم برای آتش است، و مرد فتنه انگیز به جهت برانگیختن نزاع. | ۲۱ 21 |
As coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire, so is a contentious man to kindling strife.
| سخنان نمام مثل خوراک لذیذ است، که به عمقهای دل فرو می‌رود. | ۲۲ 22 |
The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, they go down into the innermost parts.
| لبهای پرمحبت با دل شریر، مثل نقره‌ای پردرد است که بر ظرف سفالین اندوده شود. | ۲۳ 23 |
Like silver dross on an earthen vessel are the lips of a fervent one with an evil heart.
| هر‌که بغض دارد با لبهای خود نیرنگ می‌نماید، و در دل خود فریب را ذخیره می‌کند. | ۲۴ 24 |
A malicious man disguises himself with his lips, but he harbours evil in his heart.
| هنگامی که سخن نیکو گوید، او را باور مکن زیرا که در قلبش هفت چیز مکروه است. | ۲۵ 25 |
When his speech is charming, don’t believe him, for there are seven abominations in his heart.
| هر‌چند بغض او به حیله مخفی شود، اماخباثت او در میان جماعت ظاهر خواهد گشت. | ۲۶ 26 |
His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.
| هر‌که حفره‌ای بکند در آن خواهد افتاد، وهر‌که سنگی بغلطاند بر او خواهد برگشت. | ۲۷ 27 |
Whoever digs a pit shall fall into it. Whoever rolls a stone, it will come back on him.
| زبان دروغگو از مجروح شدگان خود نفرت دارد، و دهان چاپلوس هلاکت را ایجاد می‌کند. | ۲۸ 28 |
A lying tongue hates those it hurts; and a flattering mouth works ruin.
