امثال 20

۱ 1 شراب استهزا می‌کند و مسکرات عربده می‌آورد، و هر‌که به آن فریفته شود حکیم نیست.

Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise.

۲ 2 هیبت پادشاه مثل غرش شیر است، و هر‌که خشم او را به هیجان آورد، به‌جان خود خطامی ورزد.

The terror of a king is like the roaring of a lion. He who provokes him to anger forfeits his own life.

۳ 3 از نزاع دور شدن برای انسان عزت است، اماهر مرد احمق مجادله می‌کند.

It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling.

۴ 4 مرد کاهل به‌سبب زمستان شیار نمی کند، لهذا در موسم حصاد گدایی می‌کند و نمی یابد.

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter; therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.

۵ 5 مشورت در دل انسان آب عمیق است، امامرد فهیم آن را می‌کشد.

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.

۶ 6 بسا کسانند که هر یک احسان خویش رااعلام می‌کنند، اما مرد امین را کیست که پیدا کند.

Many men claim to be men of unfailing love, but who can find a faithful man?

۷ 7 مرد عادل که به کاملیت خود سلوک نماید، پسرانش بعد از او خجسته خواهند شد.

A righteous man walks in integrity. Blessed are his children after him.

۸ 8 پادشاهی که بر کرسی داوری نشیند، تمامی بدی را از چشمان خود پراکنده می‌سازد.

A king who sits on the throne of judgment scatters away all evil with his eyes.

۹ 9 کیست که تواند گوید: «دل خود را طاهرساختم، و از گناه خویش پاک شدم.»

Who can say, “I have made my heart pure. I am clean and without sin”?

۱۰ 10 سنگهای مختلف و پیمانه های مختلف، هر دوی آنها نزد خداوند مکروه است.

Differing weights and differing measures, both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD.

۱۱ 11 طفل نیز از افعالش شناخته می‌شود، که آیااعمالش پاک و راست است یا نه.

Even a child makes himself known by his doings, whether his work is pure, and whether it is right.

۱۲ 12 گوش شنوا و چشم بینا، خداوند هر دو آنهارا آفریده است.

The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD has made even both of them.

۱۳ 13 خواب را دوست مدار مبادا فقیر شوی. چشمان خود را باز کن تا از نان سیر گردی.

Don’t love sleep, lest you come to poverty. Open your eyes, and you shall be satisfied with bread.

۱۴ 14 مشتری می‌گوید بد است، بد است، اماچون رفت آنگاه فخر می‌کند.

“It’s no good, it’s no good,” says the buyer; but when he is gone his way, then he boasts.

۱۵ 15 طلا هست و لعلها بسیار، اما لبهای معرفت جواهر گرانبها است.

There is gold and abundance of rubies, but the lips of knowledge are a rare jewel.

۱۶ 16 جامه آنکس را بگیر که به جهت غریب ضامن است، و او را به رهن بگیر که ضامن بیگانگان است.

Take the garment of one who puts up collateral for a stranger; and hold him in pledge for a wayward woman.

۱۷ 17 نان فریب برای انسان لذیذ است، اما بعد دهانش از سنگ ریزه‌ها پر خواهد شد.

Fraudulent food is sweet to a man, but afterwards his mouth is filled with gravel.

۱۸ 18 فکرها به مشورت محکم می‌شود، و باحسن تدبیر جنگ نما.

Plans are established by advice; by wise guidance you wage war!

۱۹ 19 کسی‌که به نمامی گردش کند اسرار را فاش می‌نماید، لهذا با کسی‌که لبهای خود را می‌گشایدمعاشرت منما.

He who goes about as a tale-bearer reveals secrets; therefore don’t keep company with him who opens wide his lips.

۲۰ 20 هر‌که پدر و مادر خود را لعنت کندچراغش در ظلمت غلیظ خاموش خواهد شد.

Whoever curses his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness.

۲۱ 21 اموالی که اولا به تعجیل حاصل می‌شود، عاقبتش مبارک نخواهد شد.

An inheritance quickly gained at the beginning won’t be blessed in the end.

۲۲ 22 مگو که از بدی انتقام خواهم کشید، بلکه برخداوند توکل نما و تو را نجات خواهد داد.

Don’t say, “I will pay back evil.” Wait for the LORD, and he will save you.

۲۳ 23 سنگهای مختلف نزد خداوند مکروه است، و ترازوهای متقلب نیکو نیست.

The LORD detests differing weights, and dishonest scales are not pleasing.

۲۴ 24 قدمهای انسان از خداوند است، پس مردراه خود را چگونه بفهمد؟

A man’s steps are from the LORD; how then can man understand his way?

۲۵ 25 شخصی که چیزی را به تعجیل مقدس می‌گوید، و بعد از نذر کردن استفسار می‌کند، دردام می‌افتد.

It is a snare to a man to make a rash dedication, then later to consider his vows.

۲۶ 26 پادشاه حکیم شریران را پراکنده می‌سازد وچوم را بر ایشان می‌گرداند.

A wise king winnows out the wicked, and drives the threshing wheel over them.

۲۷ 27 روح انسان، چراغ خداوند است که تمامی عمقهای دل را تفتیش می‌نماید.

The spirit of man is the LORD’s lamp, searching all his innermost parts.

۲۸ 28 رحمت و راستی پادشاه را محافظت می‌کند، و کرسی او به رحمت پایدار خواهد ماند.

Love and faithfulness keep the king safe. His throne is sustained by love.

۲۹ 29 جلال جوانان قوت ایشان است، و عزت پیران موی سفید.

The glory of young men is their strength. The splendor of old men is their gray hair.

۳۰ 30 ضربهای سخت از بدی طاهر می‌کند وتازیانه‌ها به عمق دل فرو می‌رود.

Wounding blows cleanse away evil, and beatings purge the innermost parts.
