There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is heavy on men:
| کسی‌که خدا به اودولت و اموال و عزت دهد، به حدی که هرچه جانش آرزو کند برایش باقی نباشد، اما خدا او راقوت نداده باشد که از آن بخورد بلکه مرد غریبی از آن بخورد. این نیز بطالت و مصیبت سخت است. | ۲ 2 |
a man to whom God gives riches, wealth, and honor, so that he lacks nothing for his soul of all that he desires, yet God gives him no power to eat of it, but an alien eats it. This is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
| اگر کسی صد پسر بیاورد و سالهای بسیار زندگانی نماید، به طوری که ایام سالهایش بسیارباشد اما جانش از نیکویی سیر نشود و برایش جنازه‌ای برپا نکنند، می‌گویم که سقطشده از اوبهتر است. | ۳ 3 |
If a man fathers a hundred children, and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul is not filled with good, and moreover he has no burial, I say that a stillborn child is better than he;
| زیرا که این به بطالت آمد و به تاریکی رفت و نام او در ظلمت مخفی شد. | ۴ 4 |
for it comes in vanity, and departs in darkness, and its name is covered with darkness.
| و آفتاب رانیز ندید و ندانست. این بیشتر از آن آرامی دارد. | ۵ 5 |
Moreover it has not seen the sun nor known it. This has rest rather than the other.
| و اگر هزار سال بلکه دو چندان آن زیست کند ونیکویی را نبیند، آیا همه به یکجا نمی روند؟ | ۶ 6 |
Yes, though he live a thousand years twice told, and yet fails to enjoy good, don’t all go to one place?
| تمامی مشقت انسان برای دهانش می‌باشد؛ ومعهذا جان او سیر نمی شود. | ۷ 7 |
All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
| زیرا که مرد حکیم را از احمق چه برتری است؟ و برای فقیری که می‌داند چه طور پیش زندگان سلوک نماید، چه فایده است؟ | ۸ 8 |
For what advantage has the wise more than the fool? What has the poor man, that knows how to walk before the living?
| رویت چشم از شهوت نفس بهتر است. این نیز بطالت و در‌پی باد زحمت کشیدن است. | ۹ 9 |
Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.
| هرچه بوده است به اسم خود از زمان قدیم مسمی شده است و دانسته شده است که او آدم است و به آن کسی‌که از آن تواناتر است منازعه نتواند نمود. | ۱۰ 10 |
Whatever has been, its name was given long ago; and it is known what man is; neither can he contend with him who is mightier than he.
| چونکه چیزهای بسیار هست که بطالت رامی افزاید. پس انسان را چه فضیلت است؟ | ۱۱ 11 |
For there are many words that create vanity. What does that profit man?
| زیراکیست که بداند چه چیز برای زندگانی انسان نیکواست، در مدت ایام حیات باطل وی که آنها رامثل سایه صرف می‌نماید؟ و کیست که انسان را ازآنچه بعد از او زیر آفتاب واقع خواهد شد مخبرسازد؟ | ۱۲ 12 |
For who knows what is good for man in life, all the days of his vain life which he spends like a shadow? For who can tell a man what will be after him under the sun?
