Salmenes 33

1 Fagna dykk høgt i Herren, de rettferdige! For de trurøkne sømer seg lovsong.

[A Psalm] of David. Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous; praise becomes the upright.

2 Prisa Herren med strengeleik, lovsyng honom til tistrengja harpa!

Praise the Lord on the harp; platy to him on a lute of ten strings.

3 Syng honom ein ny song, rør strengen fagert med fagnadljod.

Sing to him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.

4 For Herrens ord er ærleg meint, og all hans gjerning er trufast.

For the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are faithful.

5 Han elskar rettferd og rett; av Herrens nåde er jordi full.

He loves mercy and judgement; the earth is full the mercy of the Lord.

6 Himlarne er skapte ved Herrens ord, og all deira her ved hans munns ande.

By the word of the Lord the heavens were established; and all the host of them by the breath of his [mouth].

7 Han samlar havsens vatn som ei muga, legg dei djupe vatn i upplagshus.

Who gathers the waters of the sea as [in] a bottle; who lays up the deeps in treasuries.

8 All jordi må ottast for Herren, for honom ræddast alle som bur i mannheimen.

Let all the earth fear the Lord; and let all that dwell in the world be moved because of him.

9 For han tala, og so vart det; han baud, og so stod det der.

For he spoke, and they were made; he commanded, and they were created.

10 Herren spiller heidningefolks råd, gjer folkeslags tankar til inkjes.

The Lord frustrates the counsels of the nations; he brings to nothing also the reasonings of the peoples, and brings to nothing the counsels of princes.

11 Herrens råd stend ved lag i all æva, hans hjartans tankar frå ætt til ætt.

But the counsel of the Lord endures for ever, the thoughts of his heart from generation to generation.

12 Sælt er det folk som hev Herren til sin Gud, det folk som han valde ut til sin arv.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance.

13 Frå himmelen skodar Herren ned, han ser alle menneskjeborni.

The Lord looks out of heaven; he beholds all the sons of men.

14 Frå den staden der han bur, ser han ned til alle som bur på jordi,

He looks from his prepared habitation on all the dwellers on the earth;

15 han som lagar deira hjarto alle saman, han som merkar alle deira gjerningar.

who fashioned their hearts alone; who understands all their works.

16 Ein konge vert ikkje frelst ved sin store styrke, ei kjempa ikkje berga ved si store kraft.

A king is not saved by reason of a great host; and a giant shall not be delivered by the greatness of his strength.

17 Hesten er sviksam hjelp til frelsa, og med sin store styrke bergar han ikkje.

A horse is vain for safety; neither shall he be delivered by the greatness of his power.

18 Sjå, Herrens auga ser til deim som ottast honom, som ventar på hans nåde

Behold, the eyes of the Lord are on them that fear him, those that hope in his mercy;

19 til å fria deira sjæl frå dauden og halda deim i live i hungersnaud.

to deliver their souls from death, and to keep them alive in famine.

20 Vår sjæl stundar på Herren; han er vår hjelp og vår skjold.

Our soul waits on the Lord; for he is our helper and defender.

21 For i honom gled vårt hjarta seg, for me set vår lit til hans heilage namn.

For our heart shall rejoice in him, and we have hoped in his holy name.

22 Di nåde, Herre, vere yver oss, so som me vonar på deg!

Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we have hoped in you.
