Suppose a visitor should enter your synagogue, with gold rings and in grand clothes, and suppose a poor man should come in also, in shabby clothes,

and you show more respect to the visitor who is wearing grand clothes, and say – ‘There is a good seat for you here,’ but to the poor man – ‘You must stand; or sit down there by my footstool,’

Haven’t you made distinctions among yourselves, and used evil standards of judgement?

Listen, my dear friends. Has not God chosen those who are poor in the things of this world to be rich through their faith, and to possess the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him?
6 Enoothong sen loong ah ih changthih ah tachoom jokan! Mat hoonte jiinni hoomkaat hanno sen suh liilaangte ah o ah? Changteng loong ah laanglek!
But you – you insult the poor man! Isn’t it the rich who oppress you? Isn’t it they who drag you into law courts?
7 Sen suh kohalan men ese thetbaatte ah neng loong laanglek ah.
Isn’t it they who malign that honourable name spoken over you at your baptism?
8 Hasong hootthe ah kap anbah sen loong ah epunjih ah re an, erah rangteele ni uh emah ju liiha, “Senkhung sentok ah senteewah minchan han ah likhiik ih minchan theng.”
If you keep the royal law which runs – “You must love your neighbour as you love yourself,” you are doing right;
9 Enoothong sen ih o mina ang abah uh rangkhoh nah sok anno mok liilaang anbah, sen loong ah rangdajih re lan, eno Hootthe jundi hootthe thetsiitte ngeh ih dut haat han.
but, if you discriminate, you commit a sin, and stand convicted by that same law of being offenders against it.
10 O ih jengdang esiit thetsiit ah erabah jengdang thoontang thetsiitte eh hoonla.
For a person who has laid the Law, as a whole, to heart, but has failed in one particular, is accountable for breaking all its provisions.
11 Tiimnge liidi, “Misah minuh damdoh laroomjup theng,” emah liite warah ih liiha, “Mih latek haat theng” ngeh ih uh li eha. An misah minuh damdoh laroomjup ko bah uh, an ih mitek haat ubah hootthe thetsiitte ih hoonlu.
He who said “You must not commit adultery” also said “You must not murder.” If, then, you commit murder but not adultery, you are still an offender against the Law.
12 Senjeng senkong nyia senmoot senkaat ah seng puipangte hootthe ih dande ha mina likhiik ih ang theng.
Therefore, speak and act as people who are to be judged by the “Law of freedom.”
13 Tiimnge liidi o tenthet lajeeka mina ah Rangte ih dande adoh heh suh tenthet tajeeka ang ah; enoothong tenthet jeete ah dande sa echo ejih tajeeka ang ah.
For there will be justice without mercy for the person who has not acted mercifully. Mercy triumphs over Justice.
14 Joon awaan loong, sen loong dung dowa o ih bah uh sen reeraang pakna lajeeka bah tuumaang ah ese nih ang ah? Erah tuumaang ah ih puipang tam ehan?
My friends, what good is it if someone claims that they have faith, but they do not prove it by actions? Can such faith save them?
15 Jengthaak asuh soophoh soonah nyumuh khatmuh nyia phakmuh satmuh tongla.
Suppose some brother or sister should be in need of clothes and of daily bread,
16 Tiimma se ah neng suh jengkhaap huuta nawa ih emah li ubah ah, “Rangte ih romseetam toom kohan! Lomjaaja nyia wokphoot wokbi toom tong an!”—neng suh neng roidong di tiim laakiila erah lakoh koobah ah?
and one of you says to them – ‘Go, and peace be with you; keep warm and eat well!’ and yet you do not actually give them the necessities of life, what good would it be to them?
17 Erah raangtaan ih tuumaang damdoh lakkot eje angjih: reeraang pakna laje thang ih tuumaang luulu je abah, erabah tekmang.
In just the same way faith, if not followed by actions, is, by itself, a lifeless thing.
18 Enoothong mararah ih liiha, “Mina wasiit asuh tuumaang jeela, wasiit asu reeraang pakna jeela.” Ngah ih liihang, “Ngah suh noisok thaak he reeraang pakna lajeeka bah tuumaang mamah mi je ah. Nga tuumaang ah nga reeraang pakna nawa ih noisok ha.”
Someone, indeed, may say – ‘You are a man of faith, and I am a man of action.’ ‘Then show me your faith,’ I reply, ‘apart from any actions, and I will show you my faith by my actions.’
19 Sen ih Rangte ah esiit ngeh ih hanpi tam ehan? Ese laang angja! Erabah hakhoh luuwang ih uh hanpi eha—nyia mootcho ela.
It is a part of your faith, is it not, that there is one God? Good; yet even the demons have that faith, and tremble at the thought.
20 Sen loong ah engak elan! Sen reeraang pakna lajeeka bah tuumaang ah thaangmuh ang ah ngeh ih noisok ah tamjam han?
Now do you really want to understand, fool, how it is that faith without actions leads to nothing?
21 Sengte senwah Abraham ah Rangte ngathong ni mamah kateng angta? Heh sah Isak romthong ni khojoop taat kowanta, erah di heh reeraang nawa ih noisokta.
Look at our ancestor, Abraham. Was he not justified by his actions after he had offered his son, Isaac, on the altar?
22 Sen ih tatam tupkan? Erah di heh tuumaang nyia heh reeraang ah eroom ih mokala; heh tuumaang ah heh reeraang jun ih epunthoon ngeh ih noisok ha.
You see how, in his case, faith and actions went together; that his faith was perfected as the result of his actions;
23 Eno Rangteele ni liiha ah amiisak ih angla, “Abraham ih Rangte hanpiita, eno heh tuumaang jun ih Rangte ih Abraham ah kateng ngeh ih kapta.” Erah thoidi Abraham suh Rangte joonte ngeh ih poonta.
and that in this way the words of scripture came true – ‘Abraham believed God, and that was regarded by God as righteousness,’ and ‘He was called the friend of God.’
24 Erah raangtaan ih, sen ih tup ehan, heh reeraang pakna jun ih ba Rangte ngathong ni erah mina ah kateng eh hoonta, heh tuumaang laklak ih tami angka.
You see, then, that a person is justified by actions, and not by faith alone.
25 Hansangte Rahap ah uh emamah ju angta. Heh reeraang pakna jun ih Rangte damdi kateng eh hoonta, mamah ih hoonta liidi bah, Rahab ih Ijirel mijokjengte ah noppoon ano lamhoh ko nawa ih hotsoon thuk rumta.
Wasn’t it the same with the prostitute, Rahab? Was she not justified by her actions, after she had welcomed the messengers and helped them escape by another road?
26 Erah raangtaan ih, sakphu adoh chiiala lajeeka di tekmang angla likhiikhiik, reeraang pakna laje thang ih tuumaang luulu je abah erabah tekmang.
Just as a body is dead without a spirit, so faith is dead without actions.
