नीतिसूत्रे 30

1 १ याकेचा मुलगा आगूर याची वचने म्हणजे देववाणी आहेत. त्या पुरुषाने इथीएलाला, इथीएलाने उकालाला सांगितले,

The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, [even] the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal,

2 २ खचित मी खूप क्रूर आहे मनुष्य नाही; मला मानवजातीप्रमाणे समजदार बुद्धी नाही.

Surely I [am] more brutish than [any] man, and have not the understanding of a man.

3 ३ मी ज्ञान शिकलो नाही, आणि जो पवित्र त्याचे ज्ञान मला नाही.

I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy.

4 ४ आकाशापर्यंत चढून कोण गेला आहे आणि खाली उतरला आहे? कोणी वाऱ्याला आपल्या ओंजळीत एकवटून घेतला आहे? कोणी आपल्या कपड्यात जलाशय बांधून ठेवला आहे? पृथ्वीच्या सर्व सीमा कोणी स्थापिल्या आहेत? त्याचे नाव काय किंवा त्याच्या मुलाचे नाव काय? खात्रीने ते तुला माहित आहे काय?

Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what [is] his name, and what [is] his son’s name, if thou canst tell?

5 ५ देवाचा प्रत्येक शब्द पारखलेला आहे, जे त्याच्या आश्रयास येतात त्यांची तो ढाल आहे.

Every word of God [is] pure: he [is] a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

6 ६ त्याच्या वचनात काही भर घालू नको, घालशील तर तो तुझा दोष उघड करील आणि तू लबाड ठरशील.

Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

7 ७ मी तुझ्याजवळ दोन गोष्टी मागतो, मी मरण्यापूर्वी त्या मला देण्याचे नाकारू नको.

Two [things] have I required of thee; deny me [them] not before I die:

8 ८ पोकळ गर्व आणि लबाड्या माझ्यापासून दूर कर; मला खूप श्रीमंत किंवा खूप गरीब करू नकोस. मला आवश्यक तेवढेच अन्न दे.

Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:

9 ९ माझी जर अतीतृप्ती झाली तर मी तुला नाकारीन आणि परमेश्वर कोण आहे? असे म्हणेन; मी जर दरिद्री राहिलो तर मी कदाचित् चोरी करेन. आणि माझ्या देवाच्या नामाची निंदा करेन.

Lest I be full, and deny [thee], and say, Who [is] the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God [in vain].

10 १० सेवकाची निंदानालस्ती त्याच्या धन्याजवळ करू नको, करशील तर तो तुला शिव्याशाप देईल आणि तू अपराधी ठरशील.

Accuse not a servant unto his master, lest he curse thee, and thou be found guilty.

11 ११ आपल्या पित्याला शाप देणारा, आणि आपल्या आईला आशीर्वाद देत नाही अशी एक पिढी आहे,

[There is] a generation [that] curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.

12 १२ त्यांच्या दृष्टीने आपणाला शुद्ध समजणारी, पण त्यांनी स्वतःची घाण धुतलेली नाही अशी एक पिढी आहे.

[There is] a generation [that are] pure in their own eyes, and [yet] is not washed from their filthiness.

13 १३ ज्यांचे डोळे कितीतरी गर्विष्ठ आहेत, आणि ज्यांच्या पापण्या वर चढलेल्या आहेत अशी एक पिढी आहे.

[There is] a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.

14 १४ गरीबांना पृथ्वीतून व गरजवंताना मनुष्यामधून खाऊन टाकायला, जिचे दात तलवारीसारखे व जिच्या दाढा सुऱ्यांसारख्या आहेत अशी एक पिढी आहे.

[There is] a generation, whose teeth [are as] swords, and their jaw teeth [as] knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from [among] men.

15 १५ जळवेच्या दोन मुली आहेत, त्या दे, व दे अशा ओरडतात. तीन गोष्टी कधीही समाधानी नसतात, चार गोष्टी, कधीही पुरे म्हणत नाही.

The horseleach hath two daughters, [crying], Give, give. There are three [things that] are never satisfied, [yea], four [things] say not, [It is] enough:

16 १६ मृत्यूची जागा, वांझ उदर, पाण्याने तहानलेली पृथ्वी आणि जो अग्नी पुरे कधी म्हणत नाही. (Sheol h7585)

The grave; and the barren womb; the earth [that] is not filled with water; and the fire [that] saith not, [It is] enough. (Sheol h7585)

17 १७ जो डोळा पित्याची चेष्टा करतो, किंवा त्याच्या आईची आज्ञा पाळणे तुच्छ मानतो, त्यांचे डोळे खोऱ्यातले डोमकावळे टोचून बाहेर काढतील आणि त्यास गिधडाची पिल्ले खाऊन टाकतील.

The eye [that] mocketh at [his] father, and despiseth to obey [his] mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.

18 १८ मला तीन गोष्टी फार आश्चर्याच्या वाटतात, चार गोष्टी, ज्या मी समजू शकत नाही.

There be three [things which] are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not:

19 १९ आकाशात उडणाऱ्या गरुडाचा मार्ग; दगडावर चालणाऱ्या सापाचा मार्ग, समुद्राच्या हृदयात जाणाऱ्या जहाजाचा मार्ग, आणि तरुण स्त्रीबरोबर पुरुषाच्या संबंधाचा मार्ग,

The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.

20 २० हा व्यभिचारी स्त्रिचा मार्ग असा आहे; ती खाऊन तोंड पुसते, आणि म्हणते मी काही चुकीचे केले नाही.

Such [is] the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.

21 २१ तीन गोष्टीने पृथ्वी कांपते, आणि चार गोष्टी तिला सहन होत नाहीत.

For three [things] the earth is disquieted, and for four [which] it cannot bear:

22 २२ जेव्हा दास राजा होतो, अन्नाने तुडुंब पोट भरलेला मूर्ख;

For a servant when he reigneth; and a fool when he is filled with meat;

23 २३ विवाह झालेली त्रासदायक स्त्री; मालकिणीची वारस झालेली दासी.

For an odious [woman] when she is married; and an handmaid that is heir to her mistress.

24 २४ पृथ्वीवरच्या चार गोष्टी अगदी लहान आहेत; पण त्या अतिशय शहाणपणाच्या आहेत.

There be four [things which are] little upon the earth, but they [are] exceeding wise:

25 २५ मुंग्या अगदी लहान आणि दुर्बल असतात, पण तरीही त्या उन्हाळ्यात आपले अन्न साठवतात.

The ants [are] a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer;

26 २६ ससे हे सशक्त प्राणी नाहीत, पण ते खडकात आपले घर करतात.

The conies [are but] a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks;

27 २७ टोळांना राजा नसतो, पण तरीही ते सर्व टोळीटोळीने बाहेर जातात.

The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands;

28 २८ पाल आपण हातानी पकडू शकतो, तरी ती राजाच्या महालात सापडते.

The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings’ palaces.

29 २९ जे आपल्या चालण्यात डौलदार असतात असे तीन प्राणी आहेत, चौघांची आपली चालण्याची ढब सुरेख आहे,

There be three [things] which go well, yea, four are comely in going:

30 ३० सिंह सर्व प्राण्यात सगळ्यात बलवान आहे तो कोणापासूनही मागे फिरत नाही.

A lion [which is] strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any;

31 ३१ गर्वाने चालणारा कोंबडा, बोकड; आणि ज्याचे सैन्य त्याच्याजवळ आहे असा राजा.

A greyhound; an he goat also; and a king, against whom [there is] no rising up.

32 ३२ जर तू गर्वाने ताठ होण्याचे मूर्खत्व केले किंवा दुष्टता योजिली तर आपला हात आपल्या मुखावर ठेव.

If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, [lay] thine hand upon thy mouth.

33 ३३ कारण जसे दूध घुसळण्याने लोणी निघते, आणि नाक पिळण्याने रक्त निघते, तसे राग चेतवल्याने भांडणे निर्माण होतात.

Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.
