1 Interea ortum est murmur populi, quasi dolentium pro labore, contra Dominum. Quod cum audisset Dominus, iratus est. Et accensus in eos ignis Domini devoravit extremam castrorum partem.
The people were complaining in the ears of Adonai. When Adonai sh'ma ·heard obeyed· it, his anger burned; and Adonai’s fire burned among them, and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp.
2 Cumque clamasset populus ad Moysen, oravit Moyses ad Dominum, et absorptus est ignis.
The people cried to Moses [Drawn out]; and Moses [Drawn out] prayed to Adonai, and the fire abated.
3 Vocavitque nomen loci illius, Incensio: eo quod incensus fuisset contra eos ignis Domini.
The name of that place was called Taberah, because Adonai’s fire burned among them.
4 Vulgus quippe promiscuum, quod ascenderat cum eis, flagravit desiderio, sedens et flens, iunctis sibi pariter filiis Israel, et ait: Quis dabit nobis ad vescendum carnes?
The mixed multitude that was among them lusted exceedingly: and the children of Israel [God prevails] also wept again, and said, “Who will give us meat to eat?
5 Recordamur piscium quos comedebamus in Aegypto gratis: in mentem nobis veniunt cucumeres, et pepones, porrique, et cepe, et allia.
We remember the fish, which we ate in Egypt [Abode of slavery] for nothing; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic;
6 Anima nostra arida est, nihil aliud respiciunt oculi nostri nisi Man.
but now we have lost our appetite. There is nothing at all except this manna ·what is it· to look at.”
7 Erat autem Man quasi semen coriandri, coloris bdellii.
The manna ·what is it· was like coriander seed, and its appearance like the appearance of bdellium.
8 Circuibatque populus, et colligens illud, frangebat mola, sive terebat in mortario, coquens in olla, et faciens ex eo tortulas saporis quasi panis oleati.
The people went around, gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in mortars, and boiled it in pots, and made cakes of it. Its taste was like the taste of fresh oil.
9 Cumque descenderet nocte super castra ros, descendebat pariter et Man.
When the dew fell on the camp in the night, the manna ·what is it· fell on it.
10 Audivit ergo Moyses flentem populum per familias, singulos per ostia tentorii sui. Iratusque est furor Domini valde: sed et Moysi intoleranda res visa est.
Moses [Drawn out] sh'ma ·heard obeyed· the people weeping throughout their families, every man at the door of his tent; and Adonai’s anger burned greatly; and Moses [Drawn out] was displeased.
11 et ait ad Dominum: Cur afflixisti servum tuum? quare non invenio gratiam coram te? et cur imposuisti pondus universi populi huius super me?
Moses [Drawn out] said to Adonai, “Why have you treated with your servant so badly? Why haven’t I found chen ·grace· in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me?
12 Numquid ego concepi omnem hanc multitudinem, vel genui eam, ut dicas mihi: Porta eos in sinu tuo sicut portare solet nutrix infantulum, et defer in terram, pro qua iurasti patribus eorum?
Have I conceived all this people? Have I brought them out, that you should tell me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a nursing infant, to the land which you swore to their fathers?’
13 Unde mihi carnes ut dem tantae multitudini? flent contra me, dicentes: Da nobis carnes ut comedamus.
Where could I get meat to give to all this people? For they weep to me, saying, ‘Give us meat, that we may eat.’
14 Non possum solus sustinere omnem hunc populum, quia gravis est mihi.
I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.
15 Sin aliter tibi videtur, obsecro ut interficias me, et inveniam gratiam in oculis tuis, ne tantis afficiar malis.
If you treat me this way, please kill me right now, if I have found chen ·grace· in your sight; and don’t let me see my wretchedness.”
16 Et dixit Dominus ad Moysen: Congrega mihi septuaginta viros de senibus Israel, quos tu nosti quod senes populi sint ac magistri: et duces eos ad ostium tabernaculi foederis, faciesque ibi stare tecum,
Adonai said to Moses [Drawn out], “Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Israel [God prevails], whom you know to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you.
17 ut descendam et loquar tibi: et auferam de spiritu tuo, tradamque eis, ut sustentent tecum onus populi, et non tu solus graveris.
I will come down and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit which is on you, and will put it on them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you not bear it yourself alone.
18 Populo quoque dices: Sanctificamini: cras comedetis carnes. ego enim audivi vos dicere: Quis dabit nobis escas carnium? bene nobis erat in Aegypto. Ut det vobis Dominus carnes, et comedatis:
“Say to the people, ‘Sanctify yourselves in preparation for tomorrow, and you will eat meat; for you have wept in the ears of Adonai, saying, “Who will give us meat to eat? For it was well with us in Egypt [Abode of slavery].” Therefore Adonai will give you meat, and you will eat.
19 non uno die, nec duobus, vel quinque aut decem, nec viginti quidem,
You will not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days,
20 sed usque ad mensem dierum, donec exeat per nares vestras, et vertatur in nauseam, eo quod repuleritis Dominum, qui in medio vestri est, et fleveritis coram eo, dicentes: Quare egressi sumus ex Aegypto?
but a whole month, until it comes out at your nostrils, and it is loathsome to you; because you have rejected Adonai who is among you, and have wept before him, saying, “Why did we come out of Egypt [Abode of slavery]?”’”
21 Et ait Moyses ad Dominum: Sexcenta millia peditum huius populi sunt. et tu dicis: Dabo eis esum carnium mense integro?
Moses [Drawn out] said, “The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand men on foot; and you have said, ‘I will give them meat, that they may eat a whole month.’
22 Numquid ovium et boum multitudo caedetur, ut possit sufficere ad cibum? vel omnes pisces maris in unum congregabuntur, ut eos satient?
Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, to be sufficient for them? Shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to be sufficient for them?”
23 Cui respondit Dominus: Numquid manus Domini invalida est? Iam nunc videbis utrum meus sermo opere compleatur.
Adonai said to Moses [Drawn out], “Has Adonai’s hand grown short? Now you will see whether my word will happen to you or not.”
24 Venit igitur Moyses, et narravit populo verba Domini, congregans septuaginta viros de senibus Israel, quos stare fecit circa tabernaculum.
Moses [Drawn out] went out, and told the people Adonai’s words; and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them around the Tent.
25 Descenditque Dominus per nubem, et locutus est ad eum, auferens de spiritu qui erat in Moyse, et dans septuaginta viris. Cumque requievisset in eis Spiritus, prophetaverunt, nec ultra cessaverunt.
Adonai came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was on him, and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did so no more.
26 Remanserat autem in castris duo viri, quorum unus vocabatur Eldad, et alter Medad, super quos requievit Spiritus. nam et ipsi descripti fuerant, et non exierant ad tabernaculum.
But two men remained in the camp. The name of one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the Spirit rested on them; and they were of those who were written, but had not gone out to the Tent; and they prophesied in the camp.
27 Cumque prophetarent in castris, cucurrit puer, et nunciavit Moysi, dicens: Eldad et Medad prophetant in castris.
A young man ran, and told Moses [Drawn out], and said, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp!”
28 Statim Iosue filius Nun, minister Moysi, et electus e pluribus, ait: Domine mi Moyses prohibe eos.
Joshua [Salvation Yah] the son of Nun, the servant of Moses [Drawn out], one of his chosen men, answered, “My lord Moses [Drawn out], forbid them!”
29 At ille: Quid, inquit, aemularis pro me? quis tribuat ut omnis populus prophetet, et det eis Dominus Spiritum suum?
Moses [Drawn out] said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all Adonai’s people were prophets, that Adonai would put his Spirit on them!”
30 Reversusque est Moyses, et maiores natu Israel in castra.
Moses [Drawn out] went into the camp, he and the elders of Israel [God prevails].
31 Ventus autem egrediens a Domino arreptas trans mare coturnices detulit, et demisit in castra itinere quantum uno die confici potest, ex omni parte castrorum per circuitum, volabantque in aere duobus cubitis altitudine super terram.
A wind from Adonai went out and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, about a day’s journey [approximately 20 mi; 32.19 km] on this side, and a day’s journey [approximately 20 mi; 32.19 km]on the other side, around the camp, and about two cubits [36 in; 91.44 cm] above the surface of the earth.
32 Surgens ergo populus toto die illo, et nocte, ac die altero, congregavit coturnicum multitudinem, qui parum, decem coros: et siccaverunt eas per gyrum castrorum.
The people rose up all that day, and all of that night, and all the next day, and gathered the quails. He who gathered least gathered ten homers; and they spread them all out for themselves around the camp.
33 Adhuc carnes erant in dentibus eorum, nec defecerat huiuscemodi cibus: et ecce furor Domini concitatus in populum, percussit eum plaga magna nimis.
While the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, Adonai’s anger burned against the people, and Adonai struck the people with a very great plague.
34 Vocatusque est ille locus, Sepulchra concupiscentiae: ibi enim sepelierunt populum qui desideraverat.
The name of that place was called Kibroth Hattaavah, because there they buried the people who lusted.
35 Egressi autem de Sepulchris concupiscentiae, venerunt in Haseroth, et manserunt ibi.
From Kibroth Hattaavah the people traveled to Hazeroth; and they stayed at Hazeroth.
