< Psalmorum 119 >

1 Alleluia. ALEPH. Beati immaculati in via: qui ambulant in lege Domini.
Happy they whose life is blameless, who walk by the law of the Lord.
2 Beati, qui scrutantur testimonia eius: in toto corde exquirunt eum.
Happy they who keep his charges, and seek him with all their hearts;
3 Non enim qui operantur iniquitatem, in viis eius ambulaverunt.
who have done no wrong, but walk in his ways.
4 Tu mandasti mandata tua custodiri nimis.
You yourself have appointed your precepts to be kept with diligence.
5 Utinam dirigantur viæ meæ, ad custodiendas iustificationes tuas.
O to be steadily guided in the keeping of your statutes!
6 Tunc non confundar, cum perspexero in omnibus mandatis tuis.
Then unashamed shall I be, when I look towards all your commandments.
7 Confitebor tibi in directione cordis: in eo quod didici iudicia iustitiæ tuæ.
I will thank you with heart unfeigned, when I learn your righteous judgments.
8 Iustificationes tuas custodiam: non me derelinquas usquequaque.
I will observe your statutes: O forsake me not utterly.
9 BETH. In quo corrigit adolescentior viam suam? in custodiendo sermones tuos.
How can a young person keep their life pure? By giving heed to your word.
10 In toto corde meo exquisivi te: ne repellas me a mandatis tuis.
With all my heart have I sought you, let me not stray from your commandments.
11 In corde meo abscondi eloquia tua: ut non peccem tibi.
In my heart have I treasured your word, to keep from sinning against you.
12 Benedictus es Domine: doce me iustificationes tuas.
Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes.
13 In labiis meis, pronunciavi omnia iudicia oris tui.
With my lips have I rehearsed all the judgments of your mouth.
14 In via testimoniorum tuorum delectatus sum, sicut in omnibus divitiis.
I delight in the way of your charges, more than in riches of all sorts.
15 In mandatis tuis exercebor: et considerabo vias tuas.
I will muse upon your precepts, and look to your paths.
16 In iustificationibus tuis meditabor: non obliviscar sermones tuos.
In your statutes I delight, I will not forget your word.
17 GHIMEL. Retribue servo tuo, vivifica me: et custodiam sermones tuos.
Grant that your servant may live, and I will observe your word.
18 Revela oculos meos: et considerabo mirabilia de lege tua.
Open my eyes, that I see wondrous things out of your law.
19 Incola ego sum in terra: non abscondas a me mandata tua.
But a guest am I on the earth: hide not your commandments from me.
20 Concupivit anima mea desiderare iustificationes tuas, in omni tempore.
My heart is crushed with longing for your ordinances, at all times.
21 Increpasti superbos: maledicti qui declinant a mandatis tuis.
You rebuke the proud, the accursed, who wander from your commandments.
22 Aufer a me opprobrium, et contemptum: quia testimonia tua exquisivi.
Roll away from me scorn and contempt, for I have observed your charges.
23 Etenim sederunt principes, et adversum me loquebantur: servus autem tuus exercebatur in iustificationibus tuis.
Though princes sit plotting against me, your servant will muse on your statutes.
24 Nam et testimonia tua meditatio mea est: et consilium meum iustificationes tuæ.
Your charges are my delight, they are my counsellors.
25 DALETH. Adhæsit pavimento anima mea: vivifica me secundum verbum tuum.
I lie grovelling in the dust; revive me, as you have promised.
26 Vias meas enunciavi, et exaudisti me: doce me iustificationes tuas.
I told of my ways, you made answer; teach me your statutes.
27 Viam iustificationum tuarum instrue me: et exercebor in mirabilibus tuis.
Grant me insight into your precepts, and I will muse on your wonders.
28 Dormitavit anima mea præ tædio: confirma me in verbis tuis.
I am overcome with sorrow; raise me up, as you have promised.
29 Viam iniquitatis amove a me: et de lege tua miserere mei.
Put the way of falsehood from me, and graciously grant me your law.
30 Viam veritatis elegi: iudicia tua non sum oblitus.
I have chosen the way of fidelity, your ordinances I long for.
31 Adhæsi testimoniis tuis Domine: noli me confundere.
I hold fast to your charges: O put me not, Lord, to shame.
32 Viam mandatorum tuorum cucurri, cum dilatasti cor meum.
I will run in the way of your commandments, for you give me room of heart.
33 HE. Legem pone mihi Domine viam iustificationum tuarum: et exquiram eam semper.
Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes, and I will keep it to the end,
34 Da mihi intellectum, et scrutabor legem tuam: et custodiam illam in toto corde meo.
instruct me to keep your law, and I will observe it with all my heart.
35 Deduc me in semitam mandatorum tuorum: quia ipsam volui.
Guide me in the path of your commandments, for therein do I delight.
36 Inclina cor meum in testimonia tua: et non in avaritiam.
Incline my heart to your charges, and not to greed of gain.
37 Averte oculos meos ne videant vanitatem: in via tua vivifica me.
Turn away my eyes from vain sights, revive me by your word.
38 Statue servo tuo eloquium tuum, in timore tuo.
Confirm to your servant the promise which is given to those who fear you.
39 Amputa opprobrium meum, quod suspicatus sum: quia iudicia tua iucunda.
Remove the reproach which I dread, because your judgments are good.
40 Ecce concupivi mandata tua: in æquitate tua vivifica me.
Behold, I long for your precepts. Quicken me in your righteousness.
41 VAU. Et veniat super me misericordia tua Domine: salutare tuum secundum eloquium tuum.
Visit me, Lord, with your love and salvation, as you have promised.
42 Et respondebo exprobrantibus mihi verbum: quia speravi in sermonibus tuis.
So shall I answer my slanderers, for my trust is in your word.
43 Et ne auferas de ore meo verbum veritatis usquequaque: quia in iudiciis tuis supersperavi.
Snatch not from my mouth the word of truth, for in your judgments I hope.
44 Et custodiam legem tuam semper: in sæculum et in sæculum sæculi.
I will keep your law continually, for ever and evermore.
45 Et ambulabam in latitudine: quia mandata tua exquisivi.
So shall I walk in wide spaces, for I give my mind to your precepts.
46 Et loquebar in testimoniis tuis in conspectu regum: et non confundebar.
I will speak of your charge before kings, and will not be ashamed thereof.
47 Et meditabar in mandatis tuis, quæ dilexi.
Your commandments are my delight, I love them exceedingly.
48 Et levavi manus meas ad mandata tua, quæ dilexi: et exercebar in iustificationibus tuis.
I will lift up my hands to your commandments, and muse upon your statutes.
49 ZAIN. Memor esto verbi tui servo tuo, in quo mihi spem dedisti.
Remember your word to your servant, on which you have made me to hope.
50 Hæc me consolata est in humilitate mea: quia eloquium tuum vivificavit me.
This is my comfort in trouble, that your word gives life to me.
51 Superbi inique agebant usquequaque: a lege autem tua non declinavi.
The arrogant utterly scorn me, but I have not declined from your law.
52 Memor fui iudiciorum tuorum a sæculo Domine: et consolatus sum.
When I think of your judgments of old, O Lord, I take to me comfort.
53 Defectio tenuit me, pro peccatoribus derelinquentibus legem tuam.
I am seized with glowing anger at the wicked who forsake your law.
54 Cantabiles mihi erant iustificationes tuæ, in loco peregrinationis meæ.
Your statutes have been to me songs in the house of my pilgrimage.
55 Memor fui nocte nominis tui Domine: et custodivi legem tuam.
I remember your name in the night, O Lord and observe your law.
56 Hæc facta est mihi: quia iustificationes tuas exquisivi.
My lot has been this, that I have kept your precepts.
57 HETH. Portio mea Domine, dixi custodire legem tuam.
My portion are you, O Lord: I have promised to keep your words.
58 Deprecatus sum faciem tuam in toto corde meo: miserere mei secundum eloquium tuum.
I entreat you with all my heart; grant me your promised favour.
59 Cogitavi vias meas: et converti pedes meos in testimonia tua.
I have thought upon my ways, and turned my feet to your charges.
60 Paratus sum, et non sum turbatus: ut custodiam mandata tua.
I hasted and tarried not to give heed to your commandments.
61 Funes peccatorum circumplexi sunt me: et legem tuam non sum oblitus.
Though the godless have wound their cords round me, I have not forgotten your law.
62 Media nocte surgebam ad confitendum tibi, super iudicia iustificationis tuæ.
At midnight I rise to praise you because of your righteous judgments.
63 Particeps ego sum omnium timentium te: et custodientium mandata tua.
With all those who fear you I company, aid with those who observe your precepts.
64 Misericordia tua Domine plena est terra: iustificationes tuas doce me.
The earth, Lord, is full of your kindness; teach me your Statutes.
65 TETH. Bonitatem fecisti cum servo tuo Domine, secundum verbum tuum.
Well have you dealt with your servant, as you have promised, O Lord.
66 Bonitatem, et disciplinam, et scientiam doce me: quia mandatis tuis credidi.
Teach me discretion and knowledge, for I have believed your commandments.
67 Priusquam humiliarer ego deliqui: propterea eloquium tuum custodivi.
Till trouble came I was a wanderer, but now I observe your word.
68 Bonus es tu: et in bonitate tua doce me iustificationes tuas.
You are good and do good; teach me your statutes.
69 Multiplicata est super me iniquitas superborum: ego autem in toto corde meo scrutabor mandata tua.
The proud have forged lies against me, but I keep your precepts with all my heart.
70 Coagulatum est sicut lac cor eorum: ego vero legem tuam meditatus sum.
Their heart is gross like fat, but I delight in your law.
71 Bonum mihi quia humiliasti me: ut discam iustificationes tuas.
It was good for me to be humbled, that I should learn your statutes.
72 Bonum mihi lex oris tui, super millia auri, et argenti.
The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.
73 IOD. Manus tuæ fecerunt me, et plasmaverunt me: da mihi intellectum, et discam mandata tua.
Your hands have made me and fashioned me; make me wise to learn your commandments.
74 Qui timent te videbunt me, et lætabuntur: quia in verba tua supersperavi.
Those who fear you shall see me with joy, for in your word have I hoped.
75 Cognovi Domine quia æquitas iudicia tua: et in veritate tua humiliasti me.
I know, O Lord, that your judgments are right, and in faithfulness you have afflicted me.
76 Fiat misericordia tua ut consoletur me, secundum eloquium tuum servo tuo.
Let your love be a comfort to me, for so have you promised your servant.
77 Veniant mihi miserationes tuæ, et vivam: quia lex tua meditatio mea est.
Visit me with your quickening pity, for your law is my delight.
78 Confundantur superbi, quia iniuste iniquitatem fecerunt in me: ego autem exercebor in mandatis tuis.
Put the proud to shame, who have wronged me falsely: I will muse on your precepts.
79 Convertantur mihi timentes te: et qui noverunt testimonia tua.
Let those turn to me who fear you, that they may learn your charges.
80 Fiat cor meum immaculatum in iustificationibus tuis, ut non confundar.
Let my heart be sound in your statutes, that I may not be put to shame.
81 CAPH. Defecit in salutare tuum anima mea: et in verbum tuum supersperavi.
My long for you to rescue me, I put my hope in your word.
82 Defecerunt oculi mei in eloquium tuum, dicentes: Quando consolaberis me?
My eyes pine away for your promise: saying, ‘When will you comfort me?’
83 Quia factus sum sicut uter in pruina: iustificationes tuas non sum oblitus.
Though shrivelled like wine-skin in smoke, your statutes I have not forgotten.
84 Quot sunt dies servi tui: quando facies de persequentibus me iudicium?
How few are the days of your servant! When will you judge those who harass me?
85 Narraverunt mihi iniqui fabulationes: sed non ut lex tua.
Proud people have dug for me pits people who do not conform to your law.
86 Omnia mandata tua veritas: inique persecuti sunt me, adiuva me.
All your commandments are trusty. With falsehood they harass me: help me.
87 Paulominus consummaverunt me in terra: ego autem non dereliqui mandata tua.
They had nearly made an end of me, yet I did not forget your precepts.
88 Secundum misericordiam tuam vivifica me: et custodiam testimonia oris tui.
Spare me in your kindness, and I will observe the charge of your mouth.
89 LAMED. In æternum Domine, verbum tuum permanet in cælo.
Forever, O Lord, is your word fixed firmly in the heavens.
90 In generationem et generationem veritas tua: fundasti terram, et permanet.
Your truth endures age after age; it is established on earth, and it stands.
91 Ordinatione tua perseverat dies: quoniam omnia serviunt tibi.
By your appointment they stand this day, for all are your servants.
92 Nisi quod lex tua meditatio mea est: tunc forte periissem in humilitate mea.
Had not your law been my joy, in my misery then had I perished.
93 In æternum non obliviscar iustificationes tuas: quia in ipsis vivificasti me.
I will never forget your precepts, for through them you have put life in me.
94 Tuus sum ego, salvum me fac: quoniam iustificationes tuas exquisivi.
I am yours, O save me, for I give my mind to your precepts.
95 Me expectaverunt peccatores ut perderent me: testimonia tua intellexi.
The wicked lay wait to destroy me, but I give heed to your charge.
96 Omnis consummationis vidi finem: latum mandatum tuum nimis.
I have seen a limit to all things: but your commandment is spacious exceedingly.
97 MEM. Quomodo dilexi legem tuam Domine? tota die meditatio mea est.
O how I love your law! All the day long I muse on it.
98 Super inimicos meos prudentem me fecisti mandato tuo: quia in æternum mihi est.
Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies: for it is mine forever.
99 Super omnes docentes me intellexi: quia testimonia tua meditatio mea est.
I am prudent above all my teachers, for your charges are my (meditation)
100 Super senes intellexi: quia mandata tua quæsivi.
I have insight more than the aged, because I observe your precepts.
101 Ab omni via mala prohibui pedes meos: ut custodiam verba tua.
I refrain my foot from all wicked ways, that I may keep your word.
102 A iudiciis tuis non declinavi: quia tu legem posuisti mihi.
I turn not aside from your judgments, for you yourself are my teacher.
103 Quam dulcia faucibus meis eloquia tua, super mel ori meo!
How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 A mandatis tuis intellexi: propterea odivi omnem viam iniquitatis.
Insight I win through your precepts, therefore every false way I hate.
105 NUN. Lucerna pedibus meis verbum tuum, et lumen semitis meis.
Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.
106 Iuravi, et statui custodire iudicia iustitiæ tuæ.
I have sworn an oath, and will keep it, to observe your righteous judgments.
107 Humiliatus sum usquequaque Domine: vivifica me secundum verbum tuum.
I am afflicted sorely: revive me, O Lord, as you said.
108 Voluntaria oris mei beneplacita fac Domine: et iudicia tua doce me.
Accept, Lord, my willing praise, and teach me your judgments.
109 Anima mea in manibus meis semper: et legem tuam non sum oblitus.
My life is in ceaseless peril; but I do not forget your law.
110 Posuerunt peccatores laqueum mihi: et de mandatis tuis non erravi.
The wicked set traps for me, yet I do not stray from your precepts.
111 Hereditate acquisivi testimonia tua in æternum: quia exultatio cordis mei sunt.
In your charges are my everlasting inheritance, they are the joy of my heart.
112 Inclinavi cor meum ad faciendas iustificationes tuas in æternum, propter retributionem.
I am resolved to perform your statutes forever, to the utmost.
113 SAMECH. Iniquos odio habui: et legem tuam dilexi.
I hate people of divided heart, but your law do I love.
114 Adiutor, et susceptor meus es tu: et in verbum tuum supersperavi.
You are my shelter and shield: in your word do I hope.
115 Declinate a me maligni: et scrutabor mandata Dei mei.
Begone, you wicked people, I will keep the commands of my God.
116 Suscipe me secundum eloquium tuum, et vivam: et non confundas me ab expectatione mea.
Uphold me and spare me, as you have promised: O disappoint me not.
117 Adiuva me, et salvus ero: et meditabor in iustificationibus tuis semper.
Hold me up, and I shall be saved: and your statutes shall be my unceasing delight.
118 Sprevisti omnes discedentes a iudiciis tuis: quia iniusta cogitatio eorum.
All who swerve from your statutes you spurn: their cunning is in vain.
119 Prævaricantes reputavi omnes peccatores terræ: ideo dilexi testimonia tua.
All the wicked of earth you count as dross, therefore I love your charges.
120 Confige timore tuo carnes meas: a iudiciis enim tuis timui.
My flesh, for fear of you, shudders, and I stand in awe of your judgments.
121 AIN. Feci iudicium et iustitiam: non tradas me calumniantibus me.
Justice and right have I practised, do not leave me to my oppressors.
122 Suscipe servum tuum in bonum: non calumnientur me superbi.
Be your servant’s surety for good, let not the proud oppress me.
123 Oculi mei defecerunt in salutare tuum: et in eloquium iustitiæ tuæ.
My eyes pine for your salvation, and for your righteous promise.
124 Fac cum servo tuo secundum misericordiam tuam: et iustificationes tuas doce me.
Deal in your love with your servant, and teach me your statutes.
125 Servus tuus sum ego: da mihi intellectum, ut sciam testimonia tua.
Your servant am I; instruct me, that I may know your charges.
126 Tempus faciendi Domine: dissipaverunt legem tuam.
It is time for the Lord to act: they have violated your law.
127 Ideo dilexi mandata tua, super aurum et topazion.
Therefore I love your commandments above gold, above fine gold.
128 Propterea ad omnia mandata tua dirigebar: omnem viam iniquam odio habui.
So by all your precepts I guide me, and every false way I hate.
129 PHE. Mirabilia testimonia tua: ideo scrutata est ea anima mea.
Your decrees are wonderful, gladly I keep them.
130 Declaratio sermonum tuorum illuminat: et intellectum dat parvulis.
When your word is unfolded, light breaks; it imparts to the simple wisdom.
131 Os meum aperui, et attraxi spiritum: quia mandata tua desiderabam.
With open mouth I pant with longing for your commandments.
132 Aspice in me, et miserere mei, secundum iudicium diligentium nomen tuum.

Shine with your face on your servant, and teach me your statutes.
136 Exitus aquarum deduxerunt oculi mei: quia non custodierunt legem tuam.
My eyes run down with rills of water, because your law is not kept.
137 SADE. Iustus es Domine: et rectum iudicium tuum.
Righteous are you, O Lord, and right are your ordinances.
138 Mandasti iustitiam testimonia tua: et veritatem tuam nimis.
The laws you has ordered are just, and trusty exceedingly.
139 Tabescere me fecit zelus meus: quia obliti sunt verba tua inimici mei.
My jealousy has undone me, that my foes have forgotten your words.
140 Ignitum eloquium tuum vehementer: et servus tuus dilexit illud.
Your word has been tested well; and your servant loves it.
141 Adolescentulus sum ego, et contemptus: iustificationes tuas non sum oblitus.
I am little and held in contempt, but your precepts I have not forgotten.
142 Iustitia tua, iustitia in æternum: et lex tua veritas.
Just is your justice forever, and trusty is your law.
143 Tribulatio, et angustia invenerunt me: mandata tua meditatio mea est.
Stress and strain are upon me, but your commandments are my delight.
144 Æquitas testimonia tua in æternum: intellectum da mihi, et vivam.
Right are your charges forever, instruct me that I may live.

146 Clamavi ad te, salvum me fac: ut custodiam mandata tua.
I cry to you: O save me, and I will observe your charges.
147 Præveni in maturitate, et clamavi: quia in verba tua supersperavi.
Ere the dawn I cry for your help: in your word do I hope.
148 Prævenerunt oculi mei ad te diluculo: ut meditarer eloquia tua.
Awake I meet the night-watches, to muse upon your sayings.
149 Vocem meam audi secundum misericordiam tuam Domine: et secundum iudicium tuum vivifica me.
Hear my voice in your kindness: O Lord, by your judgments revive me.
150 Appropinquaverunt persequentes me iniquitati: a lege autem tua longe facti sunt.
Near me are wicked tormentors, who are far from thoughts of your law;
151 Prope es tu Domine: et omnes viæ tuæ veritas.
but near, too, are you, O Lord, and all your commandments are trusty.
152 Initio cognovi de testimoniis tuis: quia in æternum fundasti ea.
Long have I known from your charges that you have founded them for all time.

Great is your pity, O Lord: Revive me, as you have ordained.
157 Multi qui persequuntur me, et tribulant me: a testimoniis tuis non declinavi.
My foes and tormentors are many, but I have not declined from your charges.
158 Vidi prævaricantes, et tabescebam: quia eloquia tua non custodierunt.
I behold the traitors with loathing, for they do not observe your word.
159 Vide quoniam mandata tua dilexi Domine: in misericordia tua vivifica me.
Behold how I love your precepts: revive me, O Lord!, in your kindness.
160 Principium verborum tuorum, veritas: in æternum omnia iudicia iustitiæ tuæ.
The sum of your word is truth, all your laws are just and eternal.
161 SIN. Principes persecuti sunt me gratis: et a verbis tuis formidavit cor meum.
Princes have harassed me wantonly: but my heart stands in awe of your word.
162 Lætabor ego super eloquia tua: sicut qui invenit spolia multa.
Over your word I rejoice as one who finds great spoil.
163 Iniquitatem odio habui, et abominatus sum: legem autem tuam dilexi.
Falsehood I hate and abhor, but your law do I love.

169 TAU. Appropinquet deprecatio mea in conspectu tuo Domine: iuxta eloquium tuum da mihi intellectum.
Let my cry come before you, O Lord: give me insight, as you have promised.
170 Intret postulatio mea in conspectu tuo: secundum eloquium tuum eripe me.
Let my prayer enter into your presence: deliver me, as you have said.
171 Eructabunt labia mea hymnum, cum docueris me iustificationes tuas.
My lips shall be fountains of praise, that you teach me your statutes.
172 Pronunciabit lingua mea eloquium tuum: quia omnia mandata tua æquitas.
My tongue shall sing of your word, for all your commandments are right.
173 Fiat manus tua ut salvet me: quoniam mandata tua elegi.
Let your hand be ready to help me, for your precepts have been my choice.

I long, Lord, for your salvation, and your law is my delight.
175 Vivet anima mea, et laudabit te: et iudicia tua adiuvabunt me.
Revive me that I may praise you, and let your precepts help me.
