1 Convocatis autem duodecim Apostolis, dedit illis virtutem, et potestatem super omnia dæmonia, et ut languores curarent.
Jesus called the Twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all demons, as well as to cure diseases.
2 Et misit illos prædicare regnum Dei, et sanare infirmos.
He sent them out as his messengers, to proclaim the kingdom of God, and to work cures.
3 Et ait ad illos: Nihil tuleritis in via, neque virgam, neque peram, neque panem, neque pecuniam, neque duas tunicas habeatis.
‘Do not,’ he said to them, ‘take anything for your journey; not even a staff, or a bag, or bread, or any silver, or a change of clothes with you.
4 Et in quamcumque domum intraveritis, ibi manete, et inde ne exeatis.
Whatever house you go to stay in, remain there, and leave from that place.
5 Et quicumque non receperint vos: exeuntes de civitate illa, etiam pulverem pedum vestrorum excutite in testimonium supra illos.
If people do not welcome you, as you leave that town, shake even the dust off your feet, as a protest against them.’
6 Egressi autem circuibant per castella evangelizantes, et curantes ubique.
Then they set out and went from village to village, telling the good news and curing people everywhere.
7 Audivit autem Herodes tetrarcha omnia, quæ fiebant ab eo, et hæsitabat eo quod diceretur
Herod the ruler heard of all that was happening, and was perplexed, because it was said by some that John must be risen from the dead.
8 a quibusdam: Quia Ioannes surrexit a mortuis: a quibusdam vero: Quia Elias apparuit: ab aliis autem: Quia propheta unus de antiquis surrexit.
Some again said that Elijah had appeared, and others that one of the old prophets had risen again.
9 Et ait Herodes: Ioannem ego decollavit: Quis est autem iste, de quo ego talia audio? Et quærebat videre eum.
But Herod himself said, ‘John I beheaded; but who is this of whom I hear such things?’ And he endeavoured to see him.
10 Et reversi Apostoli, narraverunt illi quæcumque fecerunt: et assumptis illis secessit seorsum in locum desertum, qui est Bethsaidæ.
When the apostles returned, they related to Jesus all that they had done. Then Jesus went privately to a town called Bethsaida, taking the apostles with him.
11 Quod cum cognovissent turbæ, secutæ sunt illum: et excepit eos, et loquebatur illis de regno Dei, et eos, qui cura indigebant, sanabat.
But the people recognised him and followed him in crowds; and Jesus welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, while he cured those who were in need of help.
12 Dies autem cœperat declinare. Et accedentes duodecim dixerunt illi: Dimitte turbas, ut euntes in castella, villasque quæ circa sunt, divertant, et inveniant escas: quia hic in loco deserto sumus.
The day was drawing to a close, when the twelve came up to him, and said, ‘Send the crowd away, so that they may make their way to the villages and farms round about, and find themselves lodgings and provisions, for we are in a lonely spot here.’
13 Ait autem ad illos: Vos date illis manducare. At illi dixerunt: Non sunt nobis plus quam quinque panes, et duo pisces: nisi forte nos eamus, et emamus in omnem hanc turbam escas.
But Jesus said, ‘It is for you to give them something to eat.’ ‘We have not more than five loaves and two fish,’ they answered. ‘Unless indeed we are to go and buy food for all these people.’
14 Erant autem fere viri quinque millia. Ait autem ad discipulos suos: Facite illos discumbere per convivia quinquagenos.
(For the men among them were about five thousand.) ‘Get them seated in companies,’ was his reply, ‘about fifty in each.’
15 Et ita fecerunt. Et discumbere fecerunt omnes.
This they did, and got all the people seated.
16 Acceptis autem quinque panibus, et duobus piscibus, respexit in cælum: et benedixit illis, et fregit, et distribuit discipulis suis, ut ponerent ante turbas.
Taking the five loaves and the two fish, Jesus looked up to heaven and said the blessing over them. Then he broke them in pieces, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people.
17 Et manducaverunt omnes, et saturati sunt. Et sublatum est quod superfuit illis, fragmentorum cophini duodecim.
Everyone had sufficient to eat, and what was left of the broken pieces was picked up – twelve baskets.
18 Et factum est cum solus esset orans, erant cum illo et discipuli: et interrogavit illos, dicens: Quem me dicunt esse turbæ?
Afterwards, when Jesus was alone, praying, his disciples joined him, and he asked them this question – ‘Who do the people say that I am?’
19 At illi responderunt, et dixerunt: Ioannem Baptistam, alii autem Eliam, alii vero quia unus Propheta de prioribus surrexit.
‘John the Baptist,’ was their answer. ‘Others, however, say that you are Elijah, while others say that one of the old prophets has risen again.’
20 Dixit autem illis: Vos autem quem me esse dicitis? Respondens Simon Petrus dixit: Christum Dei.
‘But you,’ he went on, ‘who do you say that I am?’ And to this Peter answered, ‘The Christ of God.’
21 At ille increpans illos, præcepit ne cui dicerent hoc,
Jesus, however, strictly charged them not to say this to anyone;
22 dicens: Quia oportet Filium hominis multa pati, et reprobari a senioribus, et principibus sacerdotum, et scribis, et occidi, et tertia die resurgere.
he told them that the Son of Man must undergo much suffering, and be rejected by the elders, and chief priests, and teachers of the Law, and be put to death, and rise on the third day.
23 Dicebat autem ad omnes: Si quis vult post me venire, abneget semetipsum, et tollat crucem suam quotidie, et sequatur me.
And to all present he said, ‘If any one wishes to walk in my steps, they must renounce self, and take up their cross daily, and follow me.
24 Qui enim voluerit animam suam salvam facere, perdet illam: nam qui perdiderit animam suam propter me, salvam faciet illam.
For whoever wishes to save their life will lose it, and whoever, for my sake, loses his life – that person will save it.
25 Quid enim proficit homo, si lucretur universum mundum, se autem ipsum perdat, et detrimentum sui faciat?
What good does it do someone if, when they has gained the whole world, they has lost or forfeited themselves?
26 Nam qui me erubuerit, et meos sermones: hunc Filius hominis erubescet cum venerit in maiestate sua, et Patris, et sanctorum Angelorum.
Whoever is ashamed of me and of my teaching, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them, when he comes in his glory and the glory of the father and of the holy angels.
27 Dico autem vobis vere: sunt aliqui hic stantes, qui non gustabunt mortem donec videant regnum Dei.
Indeed, I tell you, some who are standing before me will not know death, until they have seen the kingdom of God.’
28 Factum est autem post hæc verba fere dies octo, et assumpsit Petrum, et Iacobum, et Ioannem, et ascendit in montem ut oraret.
About eight days after speaking these words, Jesus went up the mountain to pray, taking with him Peter, John, and James.
29 Et facta est, dum oraret, species vultus eius altera: et vestitus eius albus et refulgens.
As he was praying, the aspect of his face was changed, and his clothing became a dazzling white.
30 Et ecce duo viri loquebantur cum illo. Erant autem Moyses, et Elias, visi in maiestate:
And all at once two men were talking with Jesus; they were Moses and Elijah,
31 et dicebant excessum eius, quem completurus erat in Ierusalem.
who appeared in a glorified state, and spoke of his departure, which was destined to take place at Jerusalem.
32 Petrus vero, et qui cum illo erant, gravati erant somno. Et evigilantes viderunt maiestatem eius, et duos viros, qui stabant cum illo.
Peter and his companions had been overpowered by sleep but, suddenly becoming wide awake, they saw Jesus glorified and the two men who were standing beside him.
33 Et factum est cum discederent ab illo, ait Petrus ad Iesum: Præceptor, bonum est nos hic esse: et faciamus tria tabernacula, unum Tibi, et unum Moysi, et unum Eliæ: nesciens quid diceret.
And, as Moses and Elijah were passing away from Jesus, Peter exclaimed, ‘Sir, it is good to be here; let us make three tents, one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’ He did not know what he was saying;
34 Hæc autem illo loquente, facta est nubes, et obumbravit eos: et timuerunt, intrantibus illis in nubem.
and, while he was speaking, a cloud came down and enveloped them; and they were afraid, as they passed into the cloud;
35 Et vox facta est de nube, dicens: Hic est Filius meus dilectus, ipsum audite.
and from the cloud came a voice which said – ‘This is my Son, the Chosen One; him you must hear.’
36 Et dum fieret vox, inventus est Iesus solus. Et ipsi tacuerunt, et nemini dixerunt in illis diebus quidquam ex his, quæ viderant.
And, as the voice ceased, Jesus was found alone. The apostles kept silence, and told no one about any of the things that they had seen.
37 Factum est autem in sequenti die, descendentibus illis de monte, occurrit illis turba multa.
The next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met Jesus.
38 Et ecce vir de turba exclamavit, dicens: Magister, obsecro te, respice in filium meum quia unicus est mihi:
And just then a man in the crowd shouted out, ‘Teacher, I entreat you to look at my son, for he is my only child;
39 et ecce spiritus apprehendit eum, et subito clamat, et elidit, et dissipat eum cum spuma, et vix discedit dilanians eum:
all at once a spirit will seize him, suddenly shriek out, and throw him into convulsions until he foams, and will leave him only when he is utterly exhausted.
40 et rogavi discipulos tuos ut eiicerent illum, et non potuerunt.
I entreated your disciples to drive the spirit out, but they could not.’
41 Respondens autem Iesus, dixit: O generatio infidelis, et perversa, usquequo ero apud vos, et patiar vos? Adduc huc filium tuum.
‘Faithless and perverse generation!’ Jesus exclaimed, ‘How long must I be with you and have patience with you? Lead your son here.’
42 Et cum accederet, elisit illum dæmonium, et dissipavit.
While the boy was coming up to Jesus, the demon dashed him down and threw him into convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the foul spirit, and cured the boy, and gave him back to his father.
43 Et increpavit Iesus spiritum immundum, et sanavit puerum, et reddidit illum patri eius.
And all present were struck with awe at the majesty of God. In the midst of the general astonishment at all that Jesus was doing, he said to his disciples,
44 Stupebant autem omnes in magnitudine Dei: omnibusque mirantibus in omnibus, quæ faciebat, dixit ad discipulos suos: Ponite vos in cordibus vestris sermones istos: Filius enim hominis futurum est ut tradatur in manus hominum.
‘Listen carefully to my words. For the Son of Man is destined to be betrayed into the hands of his fellow men.’
45 At illi ignorabant verbum istud, et erat velatum ante eos ut non sentirent illud: et timebant eum interrogare de hoc verbo.
But the disciples did not understand the meaning of this; it had been concealed from them so that they did not see it, and they were afraid to question him as to what he meant.
46 Intravit autem cogitatio in eos, quis eorum maior esset.
A discussion arose among the disciples as to which of them was the greatest;
47 At Iesus videns cogitationes cordis illorum, apprehendit puerum, et statuit illum secus se,
and Jesus, knowing of the discussion that was occupying their thoughts, took hold of a little child, and placed it beside him,
48 et ait illis: Quicumque susceperit puerum istum in nomine meo, me recipit: et quicumque me receperit, recipit eum, qui me misit. Nam qui minor est inter vos omnes, hic maior est.
and then said to them, ‘Anyone who, for the sake of my name, welcomes even this little child is welcoming me; and anyone who welcomes me is welcoming him who sent me as his messenger. For whoever is least among you all – that person is great.’
49 Respondens autem Ioannes dixit: Præceptor, vidimus quemdam in nomine tuo eiicientem dæmonia, et prohibuimus eum: quia non sequitur nobiscum.
John said, ‘Sir, we saw a man driving out demons by using your name, and we tried to prevent him, because he does not follow you with us.’
50 Et ait ad illum Iesus: Nolite prohibere: qui enim non est adversum vos, pro vobis est.
‘None of you must prevent him,’ Jesus said to John, ‘whoever is not against you is for you.’
51 Factum est autem dum complerentur dies assumptionis eius, et ipse faciem suam firmavit ut iret in Ierusalem.
As the days before his being taken up to heaven were growing few, Jesus set his face resolutely in the direction of Jerusalem; and he sent on messengers in advance.
52 Et misit nuncios ante conspectum suum: et euntes intraverunt in civitatem Samaritanorum ut parerent illi.
On their way, they went into a Samaritan village to make preparations for him,
53 Et non receperunt eum, quia facies eius erat euntis in Ierusalem.
but the people there did not welcome him, because his face was set in the direction of Jerusalem.
54 Cum vidissent autem discipuli eius Iacobus, et Ioannes, dixerunt: Domine, vis dicimus ut ignis descendat de cælo, et consumat illos?
When James and John saw this, they said, ‘Master, do you wish us to call for fire to come down from the heavens and consume them?’
55 Et conversus increpavit illos, dicens: Nescitis cuius spiritus estis?
But Jesus turned and rebuked them.
56 Filius hominis non venit animas perdere, sed salvare. Et abierunt in aliud castellum.
And they made their way to another village.
57 Factum est autem: ambulantibus illis in via, dixit quidam ad illum: Sequar te quocumque ieris.
And, while they were on their way, a man said to Jesus, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’
58 Dixit illi Iesus: Vulpes foveas habent, et volucres cæli nidos: Filius autem hominis non habet ubi caput reclinet.
‘Foxes have holes,’ he replied, ‘and wild birds their nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’
59 Ait autem ad alterum: Sequere me. Ille autem dixit: Domine permitte mihi primum ire, et sepelire patrem meum.
To another man Jesus said, ‘Follow me.’ ‘Let me first go and bury my father,’ said the man.
60 Dixitque ei Iesus: Sine ut mortui sepeliant mortuos suos: tu autem vade, et annuncia regnum Dei.
But Jesus said, ‘Leave the dead to bury their dead; but go yourself and carry far and wide the news of the kingdom of God.’
61 Et ait alter: Sequar te Domine, sed permitte mihi primum renunciare his, quæ domi sunt.
‘Master,’ said another, ‘I will follow you; but first let me say goodbye to my family.’
62 Ait ad illum Iesus: Nemo mittens manum suam ad aratrum, et respiciens retro, aptus est regno Dei.
But Jesus answered, ‘No one who looks back, after putting their hand to the plough, is fitted for the kingdom of God.’
