Lucam 23
1 Et surgens omnis multitudo eorum, duxerunt illum ad Pilatum.
The whole council rose and took him to Pilate.
2 Cœperunt autem illum accusare, dicentes: Hunc invenimus subvertentem gentem nostram, et prohibentem tributa dare Cæsari, et dicentem se Christum regem esse.
There they started to accuse him. “We found this man deceiving our nation, telling people not to pay taxes to Caesar, and claiming he is Messiah, a king,” they said.
3 Pilatus autem interrogavit eum, dicens: Tu es rex Iudæorum? At ille respondens ait: Tu dicis.
“Are you the King of the Jews?” Pilate asked him. “So you say,” replied Jesus.
4 Ait autem Pilatus ad principes sacerdotum, et turbas: Nihil invenio causæ in hoc homine.
Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I don't find this man guilty of any crime.”
5 At illi invalescebant, dicentes: Commovet populum docens per universam Iudæam, incipiens a Galilæa usque huc.
But they insisted, saying, “He is inciting rebellion all over Judea with his teachings, from Galilee to right here in Jerusalem.”
6 Pilatus autem audiens Galilæam, interrogavit si homo Galilæus esset.
When he heard this, Pilate asked, “Is this man a Galilean?”
7 Et ut cognovit quod de Herodis potestate esset, remisit eum ad Herodem, qui et ipse Ierosolymis erat illis diebus.
When he discovered that Jesus came under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod who was also in Jerusalem at the time.
8 Herodes autem viso Iesu, gavisus est valde. Erat enim cupiens ex multo tempore videre eum, eo quod audierat multa de eo, et sperabat signum aliquod videre ab eo fieri.
Herod was very pleased to see Jesus since he had wanted to meet him for a long time. He had heard about Jesus and was hoping to see him perform a miracle.
9 Interrogabat autem eum multis sermonibus. At ipse nihil illi respondebat.
He asked Jesus many questions, but Jesus did not answer him at all.
10 Stabant autem principes sacerdotum, et scribæ constanter accusantes eum.
The chief priests and religious teachers stood there, angrily accusing him.
11 Sprevit autem illum Herodes cum exercitu suo: et illusit indutum veste alba, et remisit ad Pilatum.
Herod and his soldiers treated Jesus with contempt and mocked him. Then they placed a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.
12 Et facti sunt amici Herodes et Pilatus in ipsa die: nam antea inimici erant ad invicem.
From that day on Herod and Pilate were friends—before that they had been enemies.
13 Pilatus autem convocatis principibus sacerdotum, et magistratibus, et plebe,
Pilate called together the chief priests, rulers, and the people,
14 dixit ad illos: Obtulistis mihi hunc hominem, quasi avertentem populum, et ecce ego coram vobis interrogans, nullam causam inveni in homine isto ex his, in quibus eum accusatis.
and told them, “You brought this man before me, accusing him of inciting the people to rebellion. I've carefully examined him in your presence, and do not find him guilty of the charges you have brought against him.
15 Sed neque Herodes: nam remisi vos ad illum, et ecce nihil dignum morte actum est ei.
Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. He has done nothing that demands he should be put to death.
16 Emendatum ergo illum dimittam.
So I will have him flogged and then release him.”
17 Necesse autem habebat dimittere eis per diem festum, unum.
18 Exclamavit autem simul universa turba, dicens: Tolle hunc, et dimitte nobis Barabbam,
But they all shouted together, “Kill this man, and release Barabbas to us.”
19 qui erat propter seditionem quamdam factam in civitate et homicidium, missus in carcerem.
(Barabbas had been put in prison for taking part in a rebellion in the city, and for murder.)
20 Iterum autem Pilatus locutus est ad eos, volens dimittere Iesum.
Pilate wanted to release Jesus, so spoke to them again.
21 At illi succlamabant, dicentes: Crucifige, crucifige eum.
But they kept on shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22 Ille autem tertio dixit ad illos: Quid enim mali fecit iste? nullam causam mortis invenio in eo: corripiam ergo illum, et dimittam.
Pilate asked them for the third time, “But why? What crime has he committed? I don't find any reason for executing him. So I will have him flogged and then release him.”
23 At illi instabant vocibus magnis postulantes ut crucifigeretur: et invalescebant voces eorum.
But they continued insisting with loud shouts, demanding that he be crucified. Their shouting succeeded,
24 Et Pilatus adiudicavit fieri petitionem eorum.
and Pilate gave the sentence they demanded.
25 Dimisit autem illis eum, qui propter homicidium, et seditionem missus fuerat in carcerem, quem petebant, Iesum vero tradidit voluntati eorum.
He released the man imprisoned for rebellion and murder, but he sent Jesus to be put to death in accordance with their demands.
26 Et cum ducerent eum, apprehenderunt Simonem quemdam Cyrenensem venientem de villa: et imposuerunt illi crucem portare post Iesum.
As the soldiers led him away, they seized a man called Simon of Cyrene, who had come in from the countryside. They put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.
27 Sequebatur autem illum multa turba populi, et mulierum: quæ plangebant, et lamentabantur eum.
A large crowd followed him, along with women who were mourning and lamenting him.
28 Conversus autem ad illas Iesus, dixit: Filiæ Ierusalem, nolite flere super me, sed super vos ipsas flete, et super filios vestros.
Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, don't weep for me. Weep for yourselves and your children.
29 Quoniam ecce venient dies, in quibus dicent: Beatæ steriles, et ventres, qui non genuerunt, et ubera, quæ non lactaverunt.
For the time is coming when they'll say, ‘Happy are those who are childless, and those who never had babies, and those who never nursed them.’
30 Tunc incipient dicere montibus: Cadite super nos: et collibus: Operite nos.
They'll say to the mountains, ‘Fall down on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’
31 Quia si in viridi ligno hæc faciunt, in arido quid fiet?
For if they do this to wood that is green, what will happen when it's dried out?”
32 Ducebantur autem et alii duo nequam cum eo, ut interficerentur.
They also took two others who were criminals to be executed with him.
33 Et postquam venerunt in locum, qui vocatur Calvariæ, ibi crucifixerunt eum: et latrones, unum a dextris, et alterum a sinistris.
When they reached the place called the Skull they crucified him together with the criminals, one on his right, and the other on his left.
34 Iesus autem dicebat: Pater, dimitte illis: non enim sciunt quid faciunt. Dividentes vero vestimenta eius, miserunt sortes.
Jesus said, “Father, please forgive them, for they don't know what they're doing.” They divided up his clothes by throwing dice for them.
35 Et stabat populus spectans, et deridebant eum principes cum eis, dicentes: Alios salvos fecit, se salvum faciat, si hic est Christus Dei electus.
The people stood and watched and the leaders sneered at Jesus. “He saved others, let him save himself, if he is really God's Messiah, the Chosen One,” they said.
36 Illudebant autem ei et milites accedentes, et acetum offerentes ei,
The soldiers also mocked him, coming up to him and offering him wine vinegar, saying,
37 et dicentes: Si tu es rex Iudæorum, salvum te fac.
“If you're the King of the Jews, then save yourself.”
38 Erat autem et superscriptio scripta super eum litteris Græcis, et Latinis, et Hebraicis: Hic est rex Iudæorum.
Above Jesus was a sign on which it was written, “This is the King of the Jews.”
39 Unus autem de his, qui pendebant, latronibus, blasphemabat eum, dicens: Si tu es Christus, salvum fac temetipsum, et nos.
One of the criminals hanging there joined in the insults against Jesus. “Aren't you the Messiah?” he asked. “Then save yourself—and us too!”
40 Respondens autem alter increpabat eum, dicens: Neque tu times Deum, quod in eadem damnatione es.
But the other criminal disagreed and argued with him, “Don't you fear God even when you're suffering the same punishment?” he asked.
41 Et nos quidem iuste, nam digna factis recipimus: hic vero nihil mali gessit.
“For us the sentence is right since we're being punished for what we did, but this man didn't do anything wrong.”
42 Et dicebat ad Iesum: Domine, memento mei, cum veneris in regnum tuum.
Then he said, “Jesus, please remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
43 Et dixit illi Iesus: Amen dico tibi: Hodie mecum eris in Paradiso.
Jesus replied, “I promise you today you will be with me in paradise.”
44 Erat autem fere hora sexta, et tenebræ factæ sunt in universam terram usque ad horam nonam.
By this time it was around noon and darkness fell over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
45 Et obscuratus est sol: et velum templi scissum est medium.
The sun's light was shut out, and the Temple veil was torn in two.
46 Et clamans voce magna Iesus ait: Pater in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum. Et hæc dicens, expiravit.
Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, I place myself in your hands.” Having said this he breathed his last.
47 Videns autem Centurio quod factum fuerat, glorificavit Deum, dicens: Vere hic homo iustus erat.
When the centurion saw what had happened he praised God and said, “Surely this man was innocent.”
48 Et omnis turba eorum, qui simul aderant ad spectaculum istud, et videbant quæ fiebant, percutientes pectora sua revertebantur.
When all the crowds that had come to watch saw what happened they went home beating their chests in grief.
49 Stabant autem omnes noti eius a longe: et mulieres, quæ secutæ eum erant a Galilæa, hæc videntes.
But all those who knew Jesus, including the women who'd followed him from Galilee, watched from a distance.
50 Et ecce vir nomine Ioseph, qui erat decurio, vir bonus, et iustus:
There was a man called Joseph who was good and honest. He was a member of the council,
51 hic non consenserat consilio, et actibus eorum, ab Arimathæa civitate Iudææ, qui expectabat et ipse regnum Dei.
but he hadn't agreed with its decisions and actions. He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea, and was waiting expectantly for the kingdom of God.
52 Hic accessit ad Pilatum, et petiit corpus Iesu:
Joseph went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body.
53 et depositum involvit sindone, et posuit eum in monumento exciso, in quo nondum quisquam positus fuerat.
Once he'd taken it down, he wrapped it in a linen cloth. He laid Jesus in an unused tomb cut into the rock.
54 Et dies erat Parasceves, et Sabbatum illucescebat.
It was preparation day and the Sabbath would soon begin.
55 Subsecutæ autem mulieres, quæ cum eo venerant de Galilæa, viderunt monumentum, et quemadmodum positum erat corpus eius.
The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee had followed Joseph and had seen the tomb where Jesus' body had been laid.
56 Et revertentes paraverunt aromata, et unguenta: et Sabbato quidem siluerunt secundum mandatum.
They returned home and prepared spices and ointments. But on the Sabbath they rested, observing the commandment.
