1 Ut ergo cognovit Iesus quia audierunt Pharisæi quod Iesus plures discipulos facit, et baptizat, quam Ioannes,
Now, when the Master heard that the Pharisees had been told that he was making and baptizing more disciples than John
2 (quamquam Iesus non baptizaret, sed discipuli eius)
(Though it was not Jesus himself, but his disciples, who baptized),
3 reliquit Iudæam, et abiit iterum in Galilæam.
he left Judea, and set out again for Galilee.
4 Oportebat autem eum transire per Samariam.
He had to pass through Samaria,
5 Venit ergo in civitatem Samariæ, quæ dicitur Sichar: iuxta prædium, quod dedit Iacob Ioseph filio suo.
and, on his way, he came to a Samaritan town called Shechem, near the plot of land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
6 Erat autem ibi fons Iacob. Iesus ergo fatigatus ex itinere, sedebat sic supra fontem. Hora erat quasi sexta.
Jacob’s Spring was there, and Jesus, being tired after his journey, sat down beside the spring, just as he was. It was then about midday.
7 Venit mulier de Samaria haurire aquam. Dicit ei Iesus: Da mihi bibere.
A woman of Samaria came to draw water; and Jesus said to her – ‘Give me some to drink,’
8 (Discipuli enim eius abierant in civitatem ut cibos emerent.)
For his disciples had gone into the town to buy food.
9 Dicit ergo ei mulier illa Samaritana: Quomodo tu Iudæus cum sis, bibere a me poscis, quæ sum mulier Samaritana? Non enim coutuntur Iudæi Samaritanis.
‘How is it,’ replied the Samaritan woman, ‘that you who are a Jew ask for water from a Samaritan woman like me?’ (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans).
10 Respondit Iesus, et dixit ei: Si scires donum Dei, et quis est, qui dicit tibi: Da mihi bibere: tu forsitan petisses ab eo, et dedisset tibi aquam vivam.
‘If you knew of the gift of God,’ replied Jesus, ‘and who it is that is saying to you “Give me some water,” you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.’
11 Dicit ei mulier: Domine, neque in quo haurias habes, et puteus altus est: unde ergo habes aquam vivam?
‘You have no bucket, Sir, and the well is deep,’ she said. ‘Where did you get that “living water?”
12 Numquid tu maior es patre nostro Iacob, qui dedit nobis puteum, et ipse ex eo bibit, et filii eius, et pecora eius?
Surely you are not greater than our ancestor Jacob who gave us the well, and used to drink from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle!’
13 Respondit Iesus, et dixit ei: Omnis, qui bibit ex aqua hac, sitiet iterum:
‘All who drink of this water,’ replied Jesus, ‘will be thirsty again;
14 qui autem biberit ex aqua, quam ego dabo ei, non sitiet in æternum: sed aqua, quam ego dabo ei, fiet in eo fons aquæ salientis in vitam æternam. (aiōn g165, aiōnios g166)
but whoever once drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst any more; but the water that I will give him will become a spring welling up within him – a source of eternal life.’ (aiōn g165, aiōnios g166)
15 Dicit ad eum mulier: Domine, da mihi hanc aquam, ut non sitiam: neque veniam huc haurire.
‘Give me this water, Sir,’ said the woman, ‘so that I may not be thirsty, nor have to come all the way here to draw water.’
16 Dicit ei Iesus: Vade, voca virum tuum, et veni huc.
‘Go and call your husband,’ said Jesus, ‘and then come back.’
17 Respondit mulier, et dixit: Non habeo virum. Dicit ei Iesus: Bene dixisti, quia non habeo virum:
‘I have no husband,’ answered the woman. ‘You are right in saying “I have no husband,”’ replied Jesus,
18 quinque enim viros habuisti, et nunc, quem habes, non est tuus vir: hoc vere dixisti.
‘For you have had five husbands, and the man with whom you are now living is not your husband; in saying that, you have spoken the truth.’
19 Dicit ei mulier: Domine, video quia Propheta es tu.
‘I see, Sir, that you are a prophet!’ exclaimed the woman.
20 Patres nostri in monte hoc adoraverunt, et vos dicitis, quia Ierosolymis est locus, ubi adorare oportet.
‘It was on this mountain that our ancestors worshiped; and yet you Jews say that the proper place for worship is in Jerusalem.’
21 Dicit ei Iesus: Mulier crede mihi, quia venit hora, quando neque in monte hoc, neque in Ierosolymis adorabitis Patrem.
‘Believe me,’ replied Jesus, ‘a time is coming when it will be neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem that you will worship the Father.
22 Vos adoratis quod nescitis: nos adoramus quod scimus, quia salus ex Iudæis est.
You Samaritans do not know what you worship; we know what we worship, for salvation comes from the Jews.
23 Sed venit hora, et nunc est, quando veri adoratores adorabunt Patrem in spiritu et veritate. Nam et Pater tales quærit, qui adorent eum.
But a time is coming, indeed it is already here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father spiritually and truly; for such are the worshipers that the Father desires.
24 Spiritus est Deus: et eos qui adorant eum, in spiritu et veritate oportet adorare.
God is Spirit; and those who worship him must worship spiritually and truly.’
25 Dicit ei mulier: Scio quia Messias venit, (qui dicitur Christus.) cum ergo venerit ille, nobis annunciabit omnia.
‘I know,’ answered the woman, ‘that the Messiah, who is called the Christ, is coming; when once he has come, he will tell us everything.’
26 Dicit ei Iesus: Ego sum, qui loquor tecum.
‘I am he,’ Jesus said to her, ‘I who am speaking to you.’
27 Et continuo venerunt discipuli eius: et mirabantur quia cum muliere loquebatur. Nemo tamen dixit: Quid quæris, aut Quid loqueris cum ea?
At this moment his disciples came up, and were surprised to find him talking with a woman; but none of them asked “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
28 Reliquit ergo hydriam suam mulier, et abiit in civitatem, et dicit illis hominibus:
So the woman, leaving her pitcher, went back to the town, and said to the people,
29 Venite, et videte hominem, qui dixit mihi omnia quæcumque feci: Numquid ipse est Christus?
‘Come and see someone who has told me everything that I have done. Can he be the Christ?’
30 Exierunt ergo de civitate, et veniebant ad eum.
And the people left the town and went to see Jesus.
31 Interea rogabant eum discipuli, dicentes: Rabbi, manduca.
Meanwhile the disciples kept saying to him, ‘Take something to eat, Rabbi.’
32 Ille autem dicit eis: Ego cibum habeo manducare, quem vos nescitis.
‘I have food to eat,’ he answered, ‘of which you know nothing.’
33 Dicebant ergo discipuli ad invicem: Numquid aliquis attulit ei manducare?
‘Can anyone have brought him anything to eat?’ the disciples said to one another.
34 Dicit eis Iesus: Meus cibus est ut faciam voluntatem eius, qui misit me, ut perficiam opus eius.
‘My food,’ replied Jesus, ‘is to do the will of him who sent me, and to complete his work.
35 Nonne vos dicitis, Quod adhuc quattuor menses sunt, et messis venit? Ecce, dico vobis: Levate oculos vestros, et videte regiones, quia albæ sunt iam ad messem.
Don’t you say that it still wants four months to harvest? Why, look up, and see how white the fields are for harvest!
36 Et qui metit, mercedem accipit, et congregat fructum in vitam æternam: ut, et qui seminat, simul gaudeat, et qui metit. (aiōnios g166)
Already the reaper is receiving wages and gathering in sheaves for eternal life, so that sower and reaper rejoice together. (aiōnios g166)
37 In hoc enim est verbum verum: quia alius est qui seminat, et alius est qui metit.
For here the proverb holds good – “One sows, another reaps.”
38 Ego misi vos metere quod vos non laborastis: alii laboraverunt, et vos in labores eorum introistis.
I have sent you to reap that on which you have spent no labour; others have laboured, and you have reaped the results of their labour.’
39 Ex civitate autem illa multi crediderunt in eum Samaritanorum, propter verbum mulieris testimonium perhibentis: Quia dixit mihi omnia quæcumque feci.
Many from that town came to believe in Jesus – Samaritans though they were – because the woman had said, “He has told me everything that I have done.”
40 Cum venissent ergo ad illum Samaritani, rogaverunt eum ut ibi maneret. Et mansit ibi duos dies.
And, when these Samaritans had come to Jesus, they begged him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days.
41 Et multo plures crediderunt in eum propter sermonem eius.
But far more came to believe in him because of what he said himself,
42 Et mulieri dicebant: Quia iam non propter tuam loquelam credimus: ipsi enim audivimus, et scimus quia hic est vere Salvator mundi.
and they said to the woman, ‘It is no longer because of what you say that we believe in him, for we have heard him ourselves and know that he really is the Saviour of the world.’
43 Post duos autem dies exiit inde: et abiit in Galilæam.
After these two days Jesus went on to Galilee;
44 Ipse enim Iesus testimonium perhibuit quia Propheta in sua patria honorem non habet.
for he himself declared that “a prophet is not honoured in his own country.”
45 Cum ergo venisset in Galilæam, exceperunt eum Galilæi, cum omnia vidissent quæ fecerat Ierosolymis in die festo: et ipsi enim venerant ad diem festum.
When he entered Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, for they had seen all that he did at Jerusalem during the Festival, at which they also had been present.
46 Venit ergo iterum in Cana Galilææ, ubi fecit aquam vinum. Et erat quidam regulus, cuius filius infirmabatur Capharnaum.
So Jesus came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. Now there was one of the king’s officers whose son was lying ill at Capernaum.
47 Hic cum audisset quia Iesus adveniret a Iudæa in Galilæam, abiit ad eum, et rogabat eum ut descenderet, et sanaret filium eius: incipiebat enim mori.
When this man heard that Jesus had returned from Judea to Galilee, he went to him, and begged him to come down and cure his son; for he was at the point of death.
48 Dixit ergo Iesus ad eum: Nisi signa, et prodigia videritis, non creditis.
Jesus answered, ‘Unless you all see signs and wonders, you will not believe.’
49 Dicit ad eum regulus: Domine, descende prius quam moriatur filius meus.
‘Sir,’ said the officer, ‘come down before my child dies.’ And Jesus answered, ‘Go, your son is living.’
50 Dicit ei Iesus: Vade, filius tuus vivit. Credidit homo sermoni, quem dixit ei Iesus, et ibat.
The man believed what Jesus said to him, and went;
51 Iam autem eo descendente, servi occurrerunt ei, et nunciaverunt dicentes, quia filius eius viveret.
and, while he was on his way down, his servants met him, and told him that his child was living.
52 Interrogabat ergo horam ab eis, in qua melius habuerit. Et dixerunt ei: Quia heri hora septima reliquit eum febris.
So he asked them at what time the boy began to get better. ‘It was yesterday, about one o’clock,’ they said, ‘that the fever left him.’
53 Cognovit ergo pater, quia illa hora erat, in qua dixit ei Iesus: Filius tuus vivit: et credidit ipse, et domus eius tota.
By this the father knew that it was at the very time when Jesus had said to him “Your son is living”; and he himself, with all his household, believed in Jesus.
54 Hoc iterum secundum signum fecit Iesus, cum venisset a Iudæa in Galilæam.
This was the second occasion on which Jesus gave a sign of his mission on coming from Judea to Galilee.
