Job 39
1 Numquid nosti tempus partus ibicum in petris, vel parturientes cervas observasti?
Know you the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or can you mark when the hinds do calve?
2 Dinumerasti menses conceptus earum, et scisti tempus partus earum?
Can you number the months that they fulfill? or know you the time when they bring forth?
3 Incurvantur ad fœtum, et pariunt, et rugitus emittunt.
They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows.
4 Separantur filii earum, et pergunt ad pastum: egrediuntur, et non revertuntur ad eas.
Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not to them.
5 Quis dimisit onagrum liberum, et vincula eius quis solvit?
Who has sent out the wild ass free? or who has loosed the bands of the wild ass?
6 Cui dedi in solitudine domum, et tabernacula eius in terra salsuginis.
Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings.
7 Contemnit multitudinem civitatis, clamorem exactoris non audit.
He scorns the multitude of the city, neither regards he the crying of the driver.
8 Circumspicit montes pascuæ suæ, et virentia quæque perquirit.
The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searches after every green thing.
9 Numquid volet rhinoceros servire tibi, aut morabitur ad præsepe tuum?
Will the unicorn be willing to serve you, or abide by your crib?
10 Numquid alligabis rhinocerota ad arandum loro tuo? aut confringet glebas vallium post te?
Can you bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after you?
11 Numquid fiduciam habebis in magna fortitudine eius, et derelinques ei labores tuos?
Will you trust him, because his strength is great? or will you leave your labor to him?
12 Numquid credes illi quod sementem reddat tibi, et aream tuam congreget?
Will you believe him, that he will bring home your seed, and gather it into your barn?
13 Penna struthionis similis est pennis herodii, et accipitris.
Gave you the goodly wings to the peacocks? or wings and feathers to the ostrich?
14 Quando derelinquit ova sua in terra, tu forsitan in pulvere calefacies ea?
Which leaves her eggs in the earth, and warms them in dust,
15 Obliviscitur quod pes conculcet ea, aut bestia agri conterat.
And forgets that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them.
16 Duratur ad filios suos quasi non sint sui, frustra laboravit nullo timore cogente.
She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labor is in vain without fear;
17 Privavit enim eam Deus sapientia, nec dedit illi intelligentiam.
Because God has deprived her of wisdom, neither has he imparted to her understanding.
18 Cum tempus fuerit, in altum alas erigit: deridet equum et ascensorem eius.
What time she lifts up herself on high, she scorns the horse and his rider.
19 Numquid præbebis equo fortitudinem, aut circumdabis collo eius hinnitum?
Have you given the horse strength? have you clothed his neck with thunder?
20 Numquid suscitabis eum quasi locustas? gloria narium eius terror.
Can you make him afraid as a grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible.
21 Terram ungula fodit, exultat audacter: in occursum pergit armatis.
He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength: he goes on to meet the armed men.
22 Contemnit pavorem, nec cedit gladio.
He mocks at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turns he back from the sword.
23 Super ipsum sonabit pharetra, vibrabit hasta et clypeus.
The quiver rattles against him, the glittering spear and the shield.
24 Fervens et fremens sorbet terram, nec reputat tubæ sonare clangorem.
He swallows the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believes he that it is the sound of the trumpet.
25 Ubi audierit buccinam, dicit: Vah, procul odoratur bellum, exhortationem ducum, et ululatum exercitus.
He says among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smells the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.
26 Numquid per sapientiam tuam plumescit accipiter, expandens alas suas ad Austrum?
Does the hawk fly by your wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south?
27 Numquid ad præceptum tuum elevabitur aquila, et in arduis ponet nidum suum?
Does the eagle mount up at your command, and make her nest on high?
28 In petris manet, et in præruptis silicibus commoratur, atque inaccessis rupibus.
She dwells and stays on the rock, on the crag of the rock, and the strong place.
29 Inde contemplatur escam, et de longe oculi eius prospiciunt,
From there she seeks the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.
30 Pulli eius lambent sanguinem: et ubicumque cadaver fuerit, statim adest.
Her young ones also suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she.
