The word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Ebenezer; and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.
2 Mwet Philistia elos mutawauk lain mwet Israel, ac tukun mweun upa lalos, mwet Philistia elos kutangla mwet Israel, ac uniya akuran akosr tausin mwet Israel yen elos mweun we.
The Philistines put themselves in array against Israel. When they joined battle, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men of the army in the field.
3 Ke mwet lula sin mwet Israel elos foloko nu nien aktuktuk lalos, mwet kol lalos asiyuki ac fahk, “Efu ku LEUM GOD El lela mwet Philistia inge in kutangkutla misenge? Wona kut in som use Tuptup in Wuleang lun LEUM GOD Shiloh me, tuh Elan kasrekut ac molikutla liki mwet lokoalok lasr.”
When the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has the LORD defeated us today before the Philistines? Let’s get the ark of the LORD’s covenant out of Shiloh and bring it to us, that it may come amongst us and save us out of the hand of our enemies.”

So the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought from there the ark of the covenant of the LORD of Armies, who sits above the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

When the ark of the LORD’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth resounded.
6 Ke mwet Philistia elos lohng pusren sasa elos fahk, “Mea kalmen sa lulap se ma tuku liki nien aktuktuk lun mwet Israel inge?” Ke elos lohng lah Tuptup in Wuleang lun LEUM GOD sun acn we,
When the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, “What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” They understood that the LORD’s ark had come into the camp.

The Philistines were afraid, for they said, “God has come into the camp.” They said, “Woe to us! For there has not been such a thing before.
8 Su ku in molikutla liki god ku lalos inge? Pa inge god lalos ma tuh uniya mwet Egypt yen mwesis ah!
Woe to us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.
9 Mwet Philistia, kowos in pulaikna! Kowos in mweun oana mukul. Kowos fin tia, na kowos ac tufah mwet kohs nu sin mwet Hebrew, oana ke elos tuh mwet kohs nu sesr ah. Ke ma inge, kowos mweun oana mukul!”
Be strong and behave like men, O you Philistines, that you not be servants to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Strengthen yourselves like men, and fight!”
10 Mwet Philistia elos mweun arulana upa, ac elos kutangla mwet Israel, ac mwet Israel elos kaing nu acn selos. Mwet puspis anwuki. Oasr tausin tolngoul mwet mweun lun Israel misa.
The Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. There was a very great slaughter; for thirty thousand footmen of Israel fell.
11 Tuptup in Wuleang lun LEUM GOD sruhu, ac anwuki pac Hophni ac Phinehas, wen luo natul Eli.
God’s ark was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.
12 Sie mukul in sruf lal Benjamin el kasrusr tuku liki nien mweun uh nu Shiloh, ac sun acn we ke len sacna. El seya nuknuk lal ac sang kutkut nu fin sifal in akkalemye asor lal.
A man of Benjamin ran out of the army and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head.
13 Eli el nunku yohk ke Tuptup in Wuleang, ac el mutana ngetnget fin mwe muta lal sisken inkanek ah. Ke mwet sac el tuku ac sulkakin pweng inge nu in siti uh, na mwet nukewa elos wowoyak ke sangeng.
When he came, behold, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for God’s ark. When the man came into the city and told about it, all the city cried out.
14 Ke Eli el lohng pusren mwet uh el siyuk, “Mea kalmen wowon ingan?” Na mwet sac sulaklak nu yorol ac fahkak ma sikyak nu sel. (
When Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, “What does the noise of this tumult mean?” The man hurried, and came and told Eli.
15 Eli el yac eungoul oalkosr in pacl se inge, ac apkuran in kunla na pwaye mutal.)
Now Eli was ninety-eight years old. His eyes were set, so that he could not see.
16 Na mwet sac fahk, “Nga kaingla liki nien mweun uh, ac kasrusr na oe we me misenge.” Ac Eli el siyuk sel, “Wen nutik, fuka mweun ah?”
The man said to Eli, “I am he who came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army.” He said, “How did the matter go, my son?”
17 Mwet sac fahk nu sel, “Mwet Israel elos kaing liki mwet Philistia. Kut kuf na pwaye! Oayapa anwuki wen luo nutum, Hophni ac Phinehas, ac Tuptup in Wuleang lun God sruhu!”
He who brought the news answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter amongst the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and God’s ark has been captured.”
18 Ke pacl se mwet sac fahk ke Tuptup in Wuleang, na Eli el topla nu tok liki mwe muta lal sisken mutunpot in siti uh. El arulana matu ac toasr ke lupal, pwanang kaptelik inkawal ac el misa. El mwet kol fin Israel ke lusen yac angngaul.
When he made mention of God’s ark, Eli fell from off his seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck broke, and he died, for he was an old man and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.
19 Mutan kial Phinehas, wen natul Eli, el pitutu ac apkuran in isusla. Ke el lohng lah sruhu Tuptup in Wuleang lun God, ac ke papa talupal oayapa mukul tumal ah tukeni misa, na ngal in isus lal tuyang, ac el isusla.
His daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to giving birth. When she heard the news that God’s ark was taken and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and gave birth; for her pains came on her.
20 Ke el keok ac apkuran in misa, mutan in akisus lal elos fahk nu sel, “Akkeye kom, tuh kom oswela tari wen se!” Tusruktu el tiana lohang, ku topkolos.
About the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her, “Don’t be afraid, for you have given birth to a son.” But she didn’t answer, neither did she regard it.
21 El sang inen tulik sac Ichabod, su kalmah “Wolana lun God som liki Israel,” ke sripen sruhu Tuptup in Wuleang, oayapa papa talupal ac mukul tumal tukenina misa.
She named the child Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel!” because God’s ark was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
22 El fahk mu, “Wolana lun God fahsr liki Israel mweyen Tuptup in Wuleang lun God sruhu.”
She said, “The glory has departed from Israel; for God’s ark has been taken.”
