ネヘミヤ 記 6

1 サンバラテ、トビヤおよびアラビヤ人ガシムならびにその餘の我らの敵我が石垣を築き終りて一の破壊も遺らずと聞り（然どその時は未だ門に扉を設けざりしなり）

Now it happened, when it was reported to Sanballat and Tobiah, and to Geshem the Arabian, and to the rest of our enemies, that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left in it; (though even to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates; )

2 是においてサンバラテとガシム我に言つかはしけるは來れ我らオノの平野なる某の村にて相會せんとその實は我を害せんと思ひしなり

that Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, "Come, let us meet together at Ha-Kephirim in the plain of Ono." But they intended to harm me.

3 我すなはち使者を彼らに遣はして言らく我は大なる工事をなし居れば下りゆくことを得ずなんぞ工事を離れ汝らの所に下りゆきてその間工事を休ますべけんやと

I sent messengers to them, saying, "I am doing a great work, so that I can't come down. Why should the work cease, while I leave it, and come down to you?"

4 彼ら四次まで是のごとく我に言遣はしけるが我は何時もかくのごとく之に答へたり

They sent to me four times after this sort; and I answered them the same way.

5 是においてサンバラテまた五次目にその僕を前のごとく我に遣はせり其手には封ぜざる書を携さふ

Then Sanballat sent his servant to me the same way the fifth time with an open letter in his hand,

6 その文に云く國々にて言博ふガシムもまた然いふ汝はユダヤ人とともに叛かんとして之がために石垣を築けり而して汝はその王とならんとすとその言ところ是のごとし

in which was written, "It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel. Because of that, you are building the wall. You would be their king, according to these words.

7 また汝は預言者を設けて汝の事をヱルサレムに宣しめユダに王ありと言しむといひ傳ふ恐くはその事この言のごとく王に聞えん然ば汝いま來れ我ら共に相議らんと

You have also appointed prophets to preach of you at Jerusalem, saying, 'There is a king in Judah.' Now it will be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together."

8 我すなはち彼に言つかはしけるは汝が言るごとき事を爲し事なし惟なんぢ之を己の心より作りいだせるなりと

Then I sent to him, saying, "There are no such things done as you say, but you imagine them out of your own heart."

9 彼らは皆われらを懼れしめんとせり彼ら謂らく斯なさば彼ら手弱りて工事を息べければ工事成ざるべしと今ねがはくは我手を強くしたまへ

For they all would have made us afraid, saying, "Their hands will be weakened from the work, that it not be done. But now, strengthen my hands."

10 かくて後我メヘタベルの子デラヤの子シマヤの家に往しに彼閉こもり居て言らく我ら神の室に到りて神殿の内に相會し神殿の戸を閉おかん彼ら汝を殺さんとて來るべければなり必ず夜のうちに汝を殺さんとて來るべしと

I went to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home; and he said, "Let us meet together in God's house, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to kill you; yes, in the night will they come to kill you."

11 我言けるは我ごとき人いかで逃べけんや我ごとき身にして誰か神殿に入て生命を全うすることを爲んや我は入じと

I said, "Should such a man as I flee? Who is there that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in."

12 我暁れるに神かれを遣はしたまひしに非ず彼が我にむかひて此預言を説しはトビヤとサンバラテ彼に賄賂したればなり

I discerned, and look, God had not sent him; but he pronounced this prophecy against me. Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

13 彼に賄賂せしは此事のためなり即ち我をして懼れて然なして罪を犯さしめ惡き名を我に負する種を得て我を辱しめんとてなりき

He hired so that I would be afraid, do so, and sin, and that they might have material for an unfavorable report, that they might taunt me.

14 わが神よトビヤ、サンバラテおよび女預言者ノアデヤならびにその他の預言者など凡て我を懼れしめんとする者等を憶えてその行爲に報をなしたまへ

"Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear."

15 石垣は五十二日を歴てエルルの月の二十五日に成就せり

So the wall was finished in the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days.

16 我らの敵皆これを聞ければ我らの周圍の異邦人は凡て怖れ大に面目をうしなへり其は彼等この工事は我らの神の爲たまひし者なりと暁りたればなり

And it happened, when all our enemies heard of it, and all the surrounding nations saw it, that they lost their confidence; for they recognized that this work was done by our God

17 其頃ユダの貴き人々しばしば書をトビヤにおくれりトビヤの書もまた彼らに來れり

Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah's letters came to them.

18 トビヤはアラの子シカニヤの婿なるをもてユダの中に彼と盟を結べる者多かりしが故なりトビヤの子ヨハナンも亦ベレキヤの子メシユラムの女子を妻に娶りたり

For there were many in Judah sworn to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah; and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah as wife.

19 彼らはトビヤの善行を我前に語りまた我言を彼に通ぜりトビヤは常に書をおくりて我を懼れしめんとせり

Also they spoke of his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
