1 この時、主はつむじ風の中からヨブに答えられた、
Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
2 「無知の言葉をもって、神の計りごとを暗くするこの者はだれか。
Who [is] this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
3 あなたは腰に帯して、男らしくせよ。わたしはあなたに尋ねる、わたしに答えよ。
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
4 わたしが地の基をすえた時、どこにいたか。もしあなたが知っているなら言え。
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
5 あなたがもし知っているなら、だれがその度量を定めたか。だれが測りなわを地の上に張ったか。
Who hath laid the measures of it, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
6 その土台は何の上に置かれたか。その隅の石はだれがすえたか。
Upon what are the foundations of it fastened? or who laid its corner stone;
7 かの時には明けの星は相共に歌い、神の子たちはみな喜び呼ばわった。
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8 海の水が流れいで、胎内からわき出たとき、だれが戸をもって、これを閉じこめたか。
Or [who] shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth, [as if] it had issued out of the womb?
9 あの時、わたしは雲をもって衣とし、黒雲をもってむつきとし、
When I made a cloud its garment, and thick darkness a swaddling band for it,
10 これがために境を定め、関および戸を設けて、
And broke up for it my decreed [place], and set bars and doors,
11 言った、『ここまで来てもよい、越えてはならぬ、おまえの高波はここにとどまるのだ』と。
And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed.
12 あなたは生れた日からこのかた朝に命じ、夜明けにその所を知らせ、
Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; [and] caused the day-spring to know its place;
13 これに地の縁をとらえさせ、悪人をその上から振り落させたことがあるか。
That it might take hold of the ends of earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
14 地は印せられた土のように変り、衣のようにいろどられる。
It is turned as clay [to] the seal; and they stand as a garment.
15 悪人はその光を奪われ、その高くあげた腕は折られる。
And from the wicked their light is withheld, and the high arm shall be broken.
16 あなたは海の源に行ったことがあるか。淵の底を歩いたことがあるか。
Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?
17 死の門はあなたのために開かれたか。あなたは暗黒の門を見たことがあるか。
Have the gates of death been opened to thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shades of death?
18 あなたは地の広さを見きわめたか。もしこれをことごとく知っているならば言え。
Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.
19 光のある所に至る道はいずれか。暗やみのある所はどこか。
Where [is] the way [where] light dwelleth? and [as for] darkness, where [is] its place,
20 あなたはこれをその境に導くことができるか。その家路を知っているか。
That thou shouldest take it to its bound, and that thou shouldest know the paths [to] its house?
21 あなたは知っているだろう、あなたはかの時すでに生れており、またあなたの日数も多いのだから。
Knowest thou [it], because thou wast then born? or [because] the number of thy days [is] great?
22 あなたは雪の倉にはいったことがあるか。ひょうの倉を見たことがあるか。
Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,
23 これらは悩みの時のため、いくさと戦いの日のため、わたしがたくわえて置いたものだ。
Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
24 光の広がる道はどこか。東風の地に吹き渡る道はどこか。
By what way is the light parted, [which] scattereth the east wind upon the earth?
25 だれが大雨のために水路を切り開き、いかずちの光のために道を開き、
Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;
26 人なき地にも、人なき荒野にも雨を降らせ、
To cause it to rain on the earth, [where] no man [is]; [on] the wilderness in which [there is] no man;
27 荒れすたれた地をあき足らせ、これに若草をはえさせるか。
To satisfy the desolate and waste [ground]; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?
28 雨に父があるか。露の玉はだれが生んだか。
Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of the dew?
29 氷はだれの胎から出たか。空の霜はだれが生んだか。
Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?
30 水は固まって石のようになり、淵のおもては凍る。
The waters are hid as [with] a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
31 あなたはプレアデスの鎖を結ぶことができるか。オリオンの綱を解くことができるか。
Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
32 あなたは十二宮をその時にしたがって引き出すことができるか。北斗とその子星を導くことができるか。
Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in its season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with its sons?
33 あなたは天の法則を知っているか、そのおきてを地に施すことができるか。
Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set its dominion on the earth?
34 あなたは声を雲にあげ、多くの水にあなたをおおわせることができるか。
Canst thou lift thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
35 あなたはいなずまをつかわして行かせ、『われわれはここにいる』と、あなたに言わせることができるか。
Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say to thee, Here we [are]?
36 雲に知恵を置き、霧に悟りを与えたのはだれか。
Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?
37 だれが知恵をもって雲を数えることができるか。だれが天の皮袋を傾けて、
Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,
38 ちりを一つに流れ合させ、土くれを固まらせることができるか。
When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?
39 あなたはししのために食物を狩り、子じしの食欲を満たすことができるか。
Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,
40 彼らがほら穴に伏し、林のなかに待ち伏せする時、あなたはこの事をなすことができるか。
When they couch in [their] dens, [and] abide in the covert to lie in wait?
41 からすの子が神に向かって呼ばわり、食物がなくて、さまようとき、からすにえさを与える者はだれか。
Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry to God, they wander for want of food.
