使徒の働き 19
1 アポロがコリントにいた時、パウロは奥地をとおってエペソにきた。そして、ある弟子たちに出会って、
It happened that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples.
2 彼らに「あなたがたは、信仰にはいった時に、聖霊を受けたのか」と尋ねたところ、「いいえ、聖霊なるものがあることさえ、聞いたことがありません」と答えた。
He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They said to him, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."
3 「では、だれの名によってバプテスマを受けたのか」と彼がきくと、彼らは「ヨハネの名によるバプテスマを受けました」と答えた。
He said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They said, "Into John's baptism."
4 そこで、パウロが言った、「ヨハネは悔改めのバプテスマを授けたが、それによって、自分のあとに来るかた、すなわち、イエスを信じるように、人々に勧めたのである」。
Paul said, "John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Jesus."
5 人々はこれを聞いて、主イエスの名によるバプテスマを受けた。
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 そして、パウロが彼らの上に手をおくと、聖霊が彼らにくだり、それから彼らは異言を語ったり、預言をしたりし出した。
When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke with other tongues and prophesied.
7 その人たちはみんなで十二人ほどであった。
They were about twelve men in all.
8 それから、パウロは会堂にはいって、三か月のあいだ、大胆に神の国について論じ、また勧めをした。
He entered into the synagogue, and spoke boldly for a period of three months, reasoning and persuading about the things concerning the Kingdom of God.
9 ところが、ある人たちは心をかたくなにして、信じようとせず、会衆の前でこの道をあしざまに言ったので、彼は弟子たちを引き連れて、その人たちから離れ、ツラノの講堂で毎日論じた。
But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the crowd, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.
10 それが二年間も続いたので、アジヤに住んでいる者は、ユダヤ人もギリシヤ人も皆、主の言を聞いた。
This continued for two years, so that all those who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
11 神は、パウロの手によって、異常な力あるわざを次々になされた。
God worked special miracles by the hands of Paul,
12 たとえば、人々が、彼の身につけている手ぬぐいや前掛けを取って病人にあてると、その病気が除かれ、悪霊が出て行くのであった。
so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and the evil spirits went out.
13 そこで、ユダヤ人のまじない師で、遍歴している者たちが、悪霊につかれている者にむかって、主イエスの名をとなえ、「パウロの宣べ伝えているイエスによって命じる。出て行け」と、ためしに言ってみた。
But some of the itinerant Jews, exorcists, took on themselves to invoke over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, "I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches."
14 ユダヤの祭司長スケワという者の七人のむすこたちも、そんなことをしていた。
There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did this.
15 すると悪霊がこれに対して言った、「イエスなら自分は知っている。パウロもわかっている。だが、おまえたちは、いったい何者だ」。
The evil spirit answered, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?"
16 そして、悪霊につかれている人が、彼らに飛びかかり、みんなを押えつけて負かしたので、彼らは傷を負ったまま裸になって、その家を逃げ出した。
And the man in whom the evil spirit was, having leapt on them, having overpowered them all, prevailed against them so that they fled from that house naked and wounded.
17 このことがエペソに住むすべてのユダヤ人やギリシヤ人に知れわたって、みんな恐怖に襲われ、そして、主イエスの名があがめられた。
This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived at Ephesus. Fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
18 また信者になった者が大ぜいきて、自分の行為を打ちあけて告白した。
Many also of those who had believed came, confessing, and declaring their deeds.
19 それから、魔術を行っていた多くの者が、魔術の本を持ち出してきては、みんなの前で焼き捨てた。その値段を総計したところ、銀五万にも上ることがわかった。
Many of those who practiced magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. They counted the price of them, and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.
20 このようにして、主の言はますます盛んにひろまり、また力を増し加えていった。
So the word of the Lord was growing and becoming mighty.
21 これらの事があった後、パウロは御霊に感じて、マケドニヤ、アカヤをとおって、エルサレムへ行く決心をした。そして言った、「わたしは、そこに行ったのち、ぜひローマをも見なければならない」。
Now after these things had ended, Paul determined in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, "After I have been there, I must also see Rome."
22 そこで、自分に仕えている者の中から、テモテとエラストとのふたりを、まずマケドニヤに送り出し、パウロ自身は、なおしばらくアジヤにとどまった。
Having sent into Macedonia two of those who served him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.
23 そのころ、この道について容易ならぬ騒動が起った。
About that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way.
24 そのいきさつは、こうである。デメテリオという銀細工人が、銀でアルテミス神殿の模型を造って、職人たちに少なからぬ利益を得させていた。
For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen,
25 この男がその職人たちや、同類の仕事をしていた者たちを集めて言った、「諸君、われわれがこの仕事で、金もうけをしていることは、ご承知のとおりだ。
whom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, "Sirs, you know that by this business we have our wealth.
26 しかるに、諸君の見聞きしているように、あのパウロが、手で造られたものは神様ではないなどと言って、エペソばかりか、ほとんどアジヤ全体にわたって、大ぜいの人々を説きつけて誤らせた。
You see and hear, that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands.
27 これでは、お互の仕事に悪評が立つおそれがあるばかりか、大女神アルテミスの宮も軽んじられ、ひいては全アジヤ、いや全世界が拝んでいるこの大女神のご威光さえも、消えてしまいそうである」。
Not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute; but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing, and that she should even be deposed from her magnificence, whom all Asia and the world worships."
28 これを聞くと、人々は怒りに燃え、大声で「大いなるかな、エペソ人のアルテミス」と叫びつづけた。
When they heard this they were filled with anger, and began to shout, saying, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians."
29 そして、町中が大混乱に陥り、人々はパウロの道連れであるマケドニヤ人ガイオとアリスタルコとを捕えて、いっせいに劇場へなだれ込んだ。
The city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul's companions in travel.
30 パウロは群衆の中にはいって行こうとしたが、弟子たちがそれをさせなかった。
When Paul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples did not allow him.
31 アジヤ州の議員で、パウロの友人であった人たちも、彼に使をよこして、劇場にはいって行かないようにと、しきりに頼んだ。
And also some of the Asiarchs, who were his friends, sent to him and urged him not to venture into the theater.
32 中では、集会が混乱に陥ってしまって、ある者はこのことを、ほかの者はあのことを、どなりつづけていたので、大多数の者は、なんのために集まったのかも、わからないでいた。
Some therefore shouted one thing, and some another, for the assembly was in confusion. Most of them did not know why they had come together.
33 そこで、ユダヤ人たちが、前に押し出したアレキサンデルなる者を、群衆の中のある人たちが促したため、彼は手を振って、人々に弁明を試みようとした。
They brought Alexander out of the crowd, the Jews putting him forward. Alexander beckoned with his hand, and would have made a defense to the people.
34 ところが、彼がユダヤ人だとわかると、みんなの者がいっせいに「大いなるかな、エペソ人のアルテミス」と二時間ばかりも叫びつづけた。
But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice for a time of about two hours shouted, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians."
35 ついに、市の書記役が群衆を押し静めて言った、「エペソの諸君、エペソ市が大女神アルテミスと、天くだったご神体との守護役であることを知らない者が、ひとりでもいるだろうか。
When the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, "You men of Ephesus, is there anyone who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the image which fell down from Zeus?
36 これは否定のできない事実であるから、諸君はよろしく静かにしているべきで、乱暴な行動は、いっさいしてはならない。
Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash.
37 諸君はこの人たちをここにひっぱってきたが、彼らは宮を荒す者でも、われわれの女神をそしる者でもない。
For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess.
38 だから、もしデメテリオなりその職人仲間なりが、だれかに対して訴え事があるなら、裁判の日はあるし、総督もいるのだから、それぞれ訴え出るがよい。
If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a matter against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them press charges against one another.
39 しかし、何かもっと要求したい事があれば、それは正式の議会で解決してもらうべきだ。
But if you seek anything further, it will be settled in the regular assembly.
40 きょうの事件については、この騒ぎを弁護できるような理由が全くないのだから、われわれは治安をみだす罪に問われるおそれがある」。
For indeed we are in danger of being accused concerning this day's riot, there being no cause. Concerning it, we would not be able to give an account of this commotion."
41 こう言って、彼はこの集会を解散させた。
When he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
