1 時にサタンが起ってイスラエルに敵し、ダビデを動かしてイスラエルを数えさせようとした。
Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to take a census of Israel.
2 ダビデはヨアブと軍の将校たちに言った、「あなたがたは行って、ベエルシバからダンまでのイスラエルを数え、その数を調べてわたしに知らせなさい」。
David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, “Go, count Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know how many there are.”
3 ヨアブは言った、「それがどのくらいあっても、どうか主がその民を百倍に増されるように。しかし王わが主よ、彼らは皆あなたのしもべではありませんか。どうしてわが主はこの事を求められるのですか。どうしてイスラエルに罪を得させられるのですか」。
Joab said, “May Yahweh make his people a hundred times as many as they are. But, my lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guilt to Israel?”
4 しかし王の言葉がヨアブに勝ったので、ヨアブは出て行って、イスラエルをあまねく行き巡り、エルサレムに帰って来た。
Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore Joab departed and went throughout all Israel, then came to Jerusalem.
5 そしてヨアブは民の総数をダビデに告げた。すなわちイスラエルにはつるぎを抜く者が百十万人、ユダにはつるぎを抜く者が四十七万人あった。
Joab gave the sum of the census of the people to David. All those of Israel were one million one hundred thousand men who drew a sword; and in Judah were four hundred seventy thousand men who drew a sword.
6 しかしヨアブは王の命令を快しとしなかったので、レビとベニヤミンとはその中に数えなかった。
But he didn’t count Levi and Benjamin among them, for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.
7 この事が神の目に悪かったので、神はイスラエルを撃たれた。
God was displeased with this thing; therefore he struck Israel.
8 そこでダビデは神に言った、「わたしはこの事を行って大いに罪を犯しました。しかし今どうか、しもべの罪を除いてください。わたしは非常に愚かなことをいたしました」。
David said to God, “I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing. But now put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”
9 主はダビデの先見者ガデに告げて言われた、
Yahweh spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying,
10 「行ってダビデに言いなさい、『主はこう仰せられる、わたしは三つの事を示す。あなたはその一つを選びなさい。わたしはそれをあなたに行おう』と」。
“Go and speak to David, saying, ‘Yahweh says, “I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’”
11 ガデはダビデのもとに来て言った、「主はこう仰せられます、『あなたは選びなさい。
So Gad came to David and said to him, “Yahweh says, ‘Take your choice:
12 すなわち三年のききんか、あるいは三月の間、あなたのあだの前に敗れて、敵のつるぎに追いつかれるか、あるいは三日の間、主のつるぎすなわち疫病がこの国にあって、主の使がイスラエルの全領域にわたって滅ぼすことをするか』。いま、わたしがどういう答をわたしをつかわしたものになすべきか決めなさい」。
either three years of famine; or three months to be consumed before your foes, while the sword of your enemies overtakes you; or else three days of the sword of Yahweh, even pestilence in the land, and Yahweh’s angel destroying throughout all the borders of Israel. Now therefore consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.’”
13 ダビデはガデに言った、「わたしは非常に悩んでいるが、主のあわれみは大きいゆえ、わたしを主の手に陥らせてください。しかしわたしを人の手に陥らせないでください」。
David said to Gad, “I am in distress. Let me fall, I pray, into Yahweh’s hand, for his mercies are very great. Don’t let me fall into man’s hand.”
14 そこで主はイスラエルに疫病を下されたので、イスラエルびとのうち七万人が倒れた。
So Yahweh sent a pestilence on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell.
15 神はまたみ使をエルサレムにつかわして、これを滅ぼそうとされたが、み使がまさに滅ぼそうとしたとき、主は見られて、この災を悔い、その滅ぼすみ使に言われた、「もうじゅうぶんだ。今あなたの手をとどめよ」。そのとき主の使はエブスびとオルナンの打ち場のかたわらに立っていた。
God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As he was about to destroy, Yahweh saw, and he relented of the disaster, and said to the destroying angel, “It is enough. Now withdraw your hand.” Yahweh’s angel was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
16 ダビデが目をあげて見ると、主の使が地と天の間に立って、手に抜いたつるぎをもち、エルサレムの上にさし伸べていたので、ダビデと長老たちは荒布を着て、ひれ伏した。
David lifted up his eyes, and saw Yahweh’s angel standing between earth and the sky, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces.
17 そしてダビデは神に言った、「民を数えよと命じたのはわたしではありませんか。罪を犯し、悪い事をしたのはわたしです。しかしこれらの羊は何をしましたか。わが神、主よ、どうぞあなたの手をわたしと、わたしの父の家にむけてください。しかし災をあなたの民に下さないでください」。
David said to God, “Isn’t it I who commanded the people to be counted? It is even I who have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O Yahweh my God, be against me and against my father’s house; but not against your people, that they should be plagued.”
18 時に主の使はガデに命じ、ダビデが上って行って、エブスびとオルナンの打ち場で主のために一つの祭壇を築くように告げさせた。
Then Yahweh’s angel commanded Gad to tell David that David should go up and raise an altar to Yahweh on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
19 そこでダビデはガデが主の名をもって告げた言葉に従って上って行った。
David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in Yahweh’s name.
20 そのときオルナンは麦を打っていたが、ふりかえってみ使を見たので、ともにいた彼の四人の子は身をかくした。
Ornan turned back and saw the angel; and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.
21 ダビデがオルナンに近づくと、オルナンは目を上げてダビデを見、打ち場から出て来て地にひれ伏してダビデを拝した。
As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshing floor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.
22 ダビデはオルナンに言った、「この打ち場の所をわたしに与えなさい。わたしは災が民に下るのをとどめるため、そこに主のために一つの祭壇を築きます。あなたは、そのじゅうぶんな価をとってこれをわたしに与えなさい」。
Then David said to Ornan, “Sell me the place of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar to Yahweh on it. You shall sell it to me for the full price, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.”
23 オルナンはダビデに言った、「どうぞこれをお取りなさい。そして王わが主の良しと見られるところを行いなさい。わたしは牛を燔祭のために、打穀機をたきぎのために、麦を素祭のためにささげます。わたしは皆これをささげます」。
Ornan said to David, “Take it for yourself, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes. Behold, I give the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal offering. I give it all.”
24 ダビデ王はオルナンに言った、「いいえ、わたしはじゅうぶんな代価を払ってこれを買います。わたしは主のためにあなたのものを取ることをしません。また、費えなしに燔祭をささげることをいたしません」。
King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will most certainly buy it for the full price. For I will not take that which is yours for Yahweh, nor offer a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”
25 それでダビデはその所のために金六百シケルをはかって、オルナンに払った。
So David gave to Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the place.
26 こうしてダビデは主のために、その所に一つの祭壇を築き、燔祭と酬恩祭をささげて、主を呼んだ。主は燔祭の祭壇の上に天から火を下して答えられた。
David built an altar to Yahweh there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called on Yahweh; and he answered him from the sky by fire on the altar of burnt offering.
27 また主がみ使に命じられたので、彼はつるぎをさやにおさめた。
Then Yahweh commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.
28 その時ダビデは主がエブスびとオルナンの打ち場で自分に答えられたのを見たので、その所で犠牲をささげた。
At that time, when David saw that Yahweh had answered him in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.
29 モーセが荒野で造った主の幕屋と燔祭の祭壇とは、その時ギベオンの高き所にあったからである。
For Yahweh’s tabernacle, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering, were at that time in the high place at Gibeon.
30 しかしダビデはその前へ行って神に求めることができなかった。彼が主の使のつるぎを恐れたからである。
But David couldn’t go before it to inquire of God, for he was afraid because of the sword of Yahweh’s angel.
