1 Sai tu quando le capre selvagge delle rocce figliano? Hai tu osservato quando le cerve partoriscono?
Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? dost thou mark the calving of the hinds?
2 Conti tu i mesi della lor pregnanza e sai tu il momento in cui debbono sgravarsi?
Dost thou number the months that they fulfil? and knowest thou the time when they bring forth?
3 S’accosciano, fanno i lor piccini, e son tosto liberate dalle loro doglie;
They bow themselves, they give birth to their young ones, they cast out their pains;
4 i lor piccini si fanno forti, crescono all’aperto, se ne vanno, e non tornan più alle madri.
Their young ones become strong, they grow up in the open field, they go forth, and return not unto them.
5 Chi manda libero l’onàgro, e chi scioglie i legami all’asino salvatico,
Who hath sent out the wild ass free? and who hath loosed the bands of the onager,
6 al quale ho dato per dimora il deserto, e la terra salata per abitazione?
Whose house I made the wilderness, and the salt plain his dwellings?
7 Egli si beffa del frastuono della città, e non ode grida di padrone.
He laugheth at the tumult of the city, and heareth not the shouts of the driver;
8 Batte le montagne della sua pastura, e va in traccia d’ogni filo di verde.
The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.
9 Il bufalo vorrà egli servirti o passar la notte presso alla tua mangiatoia?
Will the buffalo be willing to serve thee, or will he lodge by thy crib?
10 Legherai tu il bufalo con una corda perché faccia il solco? erpicherà egli le valli dietro a te?
Canst thou bind the buffalo with his cord in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?
11 Ti fiderai di lui perché la sua forza è grande? Lascerai a lui il tuo lavoro?
Wilt thou put confidence in him, because his strength is great? and wilt thou leave thy labour to him?
12 Conterai su lui perché ti porti a casa la raccolta e ti ammonti il grano sull’aia?
Wilt thou trust him to bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy threshing-floor?
13 Lo struzzo batte allegramente l’ali; ma le penne e le piume di lui son esse pietose?
The wing of the ostrich beats joyously — But is it the stork's pinion and plumage?
14 No, poich’egli abbandona sulla terra le proprie uova e le lascia scaldar sopra la sabbia.
For she leaveth her eggs to the earth, and warmeth them in the dust,
15 Egli dimentica che un piede le potrà schiacciare, e che le bestie dei campi le potran calpestare.
And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the beast of the field may trample them.
16 Tratta duramente i suoi piccini, quasi non fosser suoi; la sua fatica sarà vana, ma ciò non lo turba,
She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers; her labour is in vain, without her concern.
17 ché Iddio l’ha privato di sapienza, e non gli ha impartito intelligenza.
For God hath deprived her of wisdom, and hath not furnished her with understanding.
18 Ma quando si leva e piglia lo slancio, si beffa del cavallo e di chi lo cavalca.
What time she lasheth herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.
19 Sei tu che dài al cavallo il coraggio? che gli vesti il collo d’una fremente criniera?
Hast thou given strength to the horse? hast thou clothed his neck with the quivering mane?
20 Sei tu che lo fai saltar come la locusta? Il fiero suo nitrito incute spavento.
Dost thou make him to leap as a locust? His majestic snorting is terrible.
21 Raspa la terra nella valle ed esulta della sua forza; si slancia incontro alle armi.
He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in [his] strength; he goeth forth to meet the armed host.
22 Della paura si ride, non trema, non indietreggia davanti alla spada.
He laugheth at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from before the sword.
23 Gli risuona addosso il turcasso, la folgorante lancia e il dardo.
The quiver rattleth upon him, the glittering spear and the javelin.
24 Con fremente furia divora la terra. Non sta più fermo quando suona la tromba.
He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage, and cannot contain himself at the sound of the trumpet:
25 Com’ode lo squillo, dice: Aha! e fiuta da lontano la battaglia, la voce tonante dei capi, e il grido di guerra.
At the noise of the trumpets he saith, Aha! and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.
26 E’ l’intelligenza tua che allo sparviere fa spiccare il volo e spiegar l’ali verso mezzogiorno?
Doth the hawk fly by thine intelligence, [and] stretch his wings toward the south?
27 E’ forse al tuo comando che l’aquila si leva in alto e fa il suo nido nei luoghi elevati?
Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make his nest on high?
28 Abita nelle rocce e vi pernotta; sta sulla punta delle rupi, sulle vette scoscese;
He inhabiteth the rock and maketh his dwelling on the point of the cliff, and the fastness:
29 di là spia la preda, e i suoi occhi miran lontano.
From thence he spieth out the prey, his eyes look into the distance;
30 I suoi piccini s’abbeveran di sangue, e dove son de’ corpi morti, ivi ella si trova”.
And his young ones suck up blood; and where the slain are, there is he.
