Geremia 10
1 Ascoltate la parola che l’Eterno vi rivolge, o casa d’Israele!
Hear ye the word which Jehovah speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:
2 Così parla l’Eterno: Non imparate a camminare nella via delle nazioni, e non abbiate paura de’ segni del cielo, perché sono le nazioni quelle che ne hanno paura.
thus saith Jehovah, Learn not the way of the nations, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the nations are dismayed at them.
3 Poiché i costumi dei popoli sono vanità; giacché si taglia un albero nella foresta e le mani dell’operaio lo lavorano con l’ascia;
For the customs of the peoples are vanity; for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the axe.
4 lo si adorna d’argento e d’oro, lo si fissa con chiodi e coi martelli perché non si muova.
They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
5 Cotesti dèi son come pali in un orto di cocomeri, e non parlano; bisogna portarli, perché non posson camminare. Non li temete! perché non possono fare alcun male, e non è in loro potere di far del bene.
They are like a palm-tree, of turned work, and speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.
6 Non v’è alcuno pari a te, o Eterno; tu sei grande, e grande in potenza è il tuo nome.
There is none like unto thee, O Jehovah; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.
7 Chi non ti temerebbe, o re delle nazioni? Poiché questo t’è dovuto; giacché fra tutti i savi delle nazioni e in tutti i loro regni non v’è alcuno pari a te.
Who should not fear thee, O King of the nations? for to thee doth it appertain; forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their royal estate, there is none like unto thee.
8 Ma costoro tutti insieme sono stupidi e insensati; non è che una dottrina di vanità; non è altro che legno;
But they are together brutish and foolish: the instruction of idols! it is but a stock.
9 argento battuto in lastre portato da Tarsis, oro venuto da Ufaz, opera di scultore e di man d’orefice; son vestiti di porpora e di scarlatto, son tutti lavoro d’abili artefici.
There is silver beaten into plates, which is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the artificer and of the hands of the goldsmith; blue and purple for their clothing; they are all the work of skilful men.
10 Ma l’Eterno è il vero Dio, egli è l’Iddio vivente, e il re eterno; per l’ira sua trema la terra, e le nazioni non posson reggere dinanzi al suo sdegno.
But Jehovah is the true God; he is the living God, and an everlasting King: at his wrath the earth trembleth, and the nations are not able to abide his indignation.
11 Così direte loro: “Gli dèi che non han fatto i cieli e la terra, scompariranno di sulla terra e di sotto il cielo”.
Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, these shall perish from the earth, and from under the heavens.
12 Egli, con la sua potenza, ha fatto la terra; con la sua sapienza ha stabilito fermamente il mondo; con la sua intelligenza ha disteso i cieli.
He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding hath he stretched out the heavens.
13 Quando fa udire la sua voce v’è un rumor d’acque nel cielo; ei fa salire i vapori dalle estremità della terra, fa guizzare i lampi per la pioggia e trae il vento dai suoi serbatoi;
When he uttereth his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasuries.
14 ogni uomo allora diventa stupido, privo di conoscenza; ogni orafo ha vergogna delle sue immagini scolpite; perché le sue immagini fuse sono una menzogna, e non v’è soffio vitale in loro.
Every man is become brutish [and is] without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his graven image; for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.
15 Sono vanità, lavoro d’inganno; nel giorno del castigo, periranno.
They are vanity, a work of delusion: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
16 A loro non somiglia Colui ch’è la parte di Giacobbe; perché Egli è quel che ha formato tutte le cose, e Israele è la tribù della sua eredità. Il suo nome è l’Eterno degli eserciti.
The portion of Jacob is not like these; for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance: Jehovah of hosts is his name.
17 Raccogli da terra il tuo bagaglio, o tu che sei cinta d’assedio!
Gather up thy wares out of the land, O thou that abidest in the siege.
18 Poiché così parla l’Eterno: Ecco, questa volta io lancerò lontano gli abitanti del paese, e li stringerò da presso affinché non isfuggano.
For thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and will distress them, that they may feel [it].
19 Guai a me a motivo della mia ferita! La mia piaga è dolorosa; ma io ho detto: “Questo è il mio male, e lo devo sopportare”.
Woe is me because of my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is [my] grief, and I must bear it.
20 Le mie tende son guaste, e tutto il mio cordame è rotto; i miei figliuoli sono andati lungi da me e non sono più; non v’è più alcuno che stenda la mia tenda, che drizzi i miei padiglioni.
My tent is destroyed, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth from me, and they are not: there is none to spread my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.
21 Perché i pastori sono stati stupidi, e non hanno cercato l’Eterno; perciò non hanno prosperato, e tutto il loro gregge è stato disperso.
For the shepherds are become brutish, and have not inquired of Jehovah: therefore they have not prospered, and all their flocks are scattered.
22 Ecco, un rumore giunge, un gran tumulto arriva dal paese del settentrione, per ridurre le città di Giuda in desolazione, in un ricetto di sciacalli.
The voice of tidings, behold, it cometh, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a dwelling-place of jackals.
23 O Eterno, io so che la via dell’uomo non è in suo potere, e che non è in poter dell’uomo che cammina il dirigere i suoi passi.
O Jehovah, I know that the way of man is not in himself; it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.
24 O Eterno, correggimi, ma con giusta misura; non nella tua ira, che tu non abbia a ridurmi a poca cosa!
O Jehovah, correct me, but in measure; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.
25 Riversa la tua ira sulle nazioni che non ti conoscono, e sui popoli che non invocano il tuo nome; poiché hanno divorato Giacobbe; sì, lo hanno divorato, l’han consumato, han desolato la sua dimora.
Pour out thy wrath upon the nations that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name; for they have devoured Jacob, yea, they have devoured him and consumed him, and have laid waste his habitation.
