1 Samuele 25

1 Samuele morì, e tutto Israele si radunò e ne fece cordoglio; e lo seppellirono nella sua proprietà, a Rama. Allora Davide si levò, e scese verso il deserto di Paran.

And Samuel died; and all Israel gathered themselves together, and lamented him, and buried him in his house at Ramah. And David arose, and went down to the wilderness of Paran.

2 Or v’era un uomo a Maon, che aveva i suoi beni a Carmel; era molto ricco, avea tremila pecore e mille capre, e si trovava a Carmel per la tosatura delle sue pecore.

And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.

3 Quest’uomo avea nome Nabal, e il nome di sua moglie era Abigail, donna di buon senso e di bell’aspetto; ma l’uomo era duro e malvagio nell’agir suo; discendeva da Caleb.

Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail; and the woman was of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb.

4 Davide, avendo saputo nel deserto che Nabal tosava le sue pecore,

And David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep.

5 gli mandò dieci giovani, ai quali disse: “Salite a Carmel, andate da Nabal, salutatelo a nome mio,

And David sent ten young men, and David said unto the young men, Get you up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name:

6 e dite così: Salute! pace a te, pace alla tua casa, e pace a tutto quello che t’appartiene!

and thus shall ye say to him that liveth [in prosperity], Peace be unto thee, and peace be to thy house, and peace be unto all that thou hast.

7 Ho saputo che tu hai i tosatori; ora, i tuoi pastori sono stati con noi, e noi non abbiam fatto loro alcun oltraggio, e nulla è stato loro portato via per tutto il tempo che sono stati a Carmel.

And now I have heard that thou hast shearers: thy shepherds have now been with us, and we did them no hurt, neither was there aught missing unto them, all the while they were in Carmel.

8 Domandane ai tuoi servi, e te lo diranno. Trovin dunque questi giovani grazia agli occhi tuoi, giacché siam venuti in giorno di gioia; e da’, ti prego, ai tuoi servi e al tuo figliuolo Davide ciò che avrai fra mano”.

Ask thy young men, and they will tell thee: wherefore let the young men find favor in thine eyes; for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thy hand, unto thy servants, and to thy son David.

9 Quando i giovani di Davide arrivarono, ripeterono a Nabal tutte queste parole in nome di Davide, poi si tacquero.

And when David’s young men came, they spake to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, and ceased.

10 Ma Nabal rispose ai servi di Davide, dicendo: “Chi è Davide? E chi e il figliuolo d’Isai? Sono molti, oggi, i servi che scappano dai loro padroni;

And Nabal answered David’s servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there are many servants now-a-days that break away every man from his master.

11 e prenderei io il mio pane, la mia acqua e la carne che ho macellata pei miei tosatori, per darli a gente che non so donde venga?”

Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men of whom I know not whence they are?

12 I giovani ripresero la loro strada, tornarono, e andarono a riferire a Davide tutte queste parole.

So David’s young men turned on their way, and went back, and came and told him according to all these words.

13 Allora Davide disse ai suoi uomini: “Ognun di voi si cinga la sua spada”. Ognuno si cinse la sua spada, e Davide pure si cinse la sua, e saliron dietro a Davide circa quattrocento uomini; duecento rimasero presso il bagaglio.

And David said unto his men, Gird ye on every man his sword. And they girded on every man his sword; and David also girded on his sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men; and two hundred abode by the baggage.

14 Or Abigail, moglie di Nabal, fu informata della cosa da uno de’ suoi servi, che le disse: “Ecco, Davide ha inviato dal deserto de’ messi per salutare il nostro padrone, ed egli li ha trattati male.

But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our master; and he railed at them.

15 Eppure, quella gente è stata molto buona verso di noi; noi non ne abbiam ricevuto alcun oltraggio, e non ci han portato via nulla per tutto il tempo che siamo andati attorno con loro quand’eravamo per la campagna.

But the men were very good unto us, and we were not hurt, neither missed we anything, as long as we went with them, when we were in the fields:

16 Di giorno e di notte sono stati per noi come una muraglia, per tutto il tempo che siamo stati con loro pascendo i greggi.

they were a wall unto us both by night and by day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.

17 Or dunque rifletti, e vedi quel che tu debba fare; poiché un guaio è certo che avverrà al nostro padrone e a tutta la sua casa; ed egli è uomo così malvagio, che non gli si può parlare”.

Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his house: for he is such a worthless fellow, that one cannot speak to him.

18 Allora Abigail prese in fretta duecento pani, due otri di vino, cinque montoni allestiti, cinque misure di grano arrostito, cento picce d’uva secca e duecento masse di fichi, e caricò ogni cosa su degli asini.

Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched grain, and a hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses.

19 Poi disse ai suoi servi: “Andate innanzi a me; ecco, io vi seguirò”. Ma non disse nulla a Nabal suo marito.

And she said unto her young men, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal.

20 E com’ella, a cavallo al suo asino, scendeva il monte per un sentiero coperto, ecco Davide e i suoi uomini che scendevano di fronte a lei, sì ch’ella li incontrò.

And it was so, as she rode on her ass, and came down by the covert of the mountain, that, behold, David and his men came down toward her; and she met them.

21 Or Davide avea detto: “Invano dunque ho io protetto tutto ciò che colui aveva nel deserto, in guisa che nulla è mancato di tutto ciò ch’ei possiede; ed egli m’ha reso male per bene.

Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained unto him: and he hath returned me evil for good.

22 Così tratti Iddio i nemici di Davide col massimo rigore! Fra qui e lo spuntar del giorno, di tutto quel che gli appartiene io non lascerò in vita un sol uomo”.

God do so unto the enemies of David, and more also, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light so much as one man-child.

23 E quando Abigail ebbe veduto Davide, scese in fretta dall’asino e gettandosi con la faccia a terra, si prostrò dinanzi a lui.

And when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and alighted from her ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground.

24 Poi, gettandosi ai suoi piedi, disse: “O mio signore, la colpa e mia! Deh, lascia che la tua serva parli in tua presenza, e tu ascolta le parole della tua serva!

And she fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me be the iniquity; and let thy handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine ears, and hear thou the words of thy handmaid.

25 Te ne prego, signor mio, non far caso di quell’uomo da nulla ch’è Nabal; poiché egli è quel che dice il suo nome; si chiama Nabal, e in lui non c’è che stoltezza; ma io, la tua serva, non vidi i giovani mandati dal mio signore.

Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this worthless fellow, even Nabal; for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thy handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou didst send.

26 Or dunque, signor mio, com’è vero che vive l’Eterno e che l’anima tua vive, l’Eterno t’ha impedito di spargere il sangue e di farti giustizia con le tue proprie mani. Ed ora, i tuoi nemici e quelli che voglion fare del male al mio signore siano come Nabal!

Now therefore, my lord, as Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing Jehovah hath withholden thee from bloodguiltiness, and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now therefore let thine enemies, and them that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.

27 E adesso, ecco questo regalo che la tua serva reca al mio signore; sia dato ai giovani che seguono il mio signore.

And now this present which thy servant hath brought unto my lord, let it be given unto the young men that follow my lord.

28 Deh, perdona il fallo della tua serva; poiché per certo l’Eterno renderà stabile la casa del mio signore, giacché il mio signore combatte le battaglie dell’Eterno, e in tutto il tempo della tua vita non s’è trovata malvagità in te.

Forgive, I pray thee, the trespass of thy handmaid: for Jehovah will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord fighteth the battles of Jehovah; and evil shall not be found in thee all thy days.

29 E se mai sorgesse alcuno a perseguitarti e ad attentare alla tua vita, l’anima del mio signore sarà custodita nello scrigno della vita presso l’Eterno, ch’è il tuo Dio; ma l’anima de’ tuoi nemici l’Eterno la lancerà via, come dalla rete d’una frombola.

And though men be risen up to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul, yet the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with Jehovah thy God; and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he sling out, as from the hollow of a sling.

30 E quando l’Eterno avrà fatto al mio signore tutto il bene che t’ha promesso e t’avrà stabilito come capo sopra Israele,

And it shall come to pass, when Jehovah shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee prince over Israel,

31 il mio signore non avrà questo dolore e questo rimorso d’avere sparso del sangue senza motivo e d’essersi fatto giustizia da sé. E quando l’Eterno avrà fatto del bene al mio signore, ricordati della tua serva”.

that this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood without cause, or that my lord hath avenged himself. And when Jehovah shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thy handmaid.

32 E Davide disse ad Abigail: “Sia benedetto l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele, che t’ha oggi mandata incontro a me!

And David said to Abigail, Blessed be Jehovah, the God of Israel, who sent thee this day to meet me:

33 E sia benedetto il tuo senno, e benedetta sii tu che m’hai oggi impedito di spargere del sangue e di farmi giustizia con le mie proprie mani!

and blessed be thy discretion, and blessed be thou, that hast kept me this day from bloodguiltiness, and from avenging myself with mine own hand.

34 Poiché certo, com’è vero che vive l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele, che m’ha impedito di farti del male, se tu non ti fossi affrettata a venirmi incontro, fra qui e lo spuntar del giorno a Nabal non sarebbe rimasto un sol uomo”.

For in very deed, as Jehovah, the God of Israel, liveth, who hath withholden me from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light so much as one man-child.

35 Davide quindi ricevé dalle mani di lei quello ch’essa avea portato, e le disse: “Risali in pace a casa tua; vedi, io ho dato ascolto alla tua voce, e ho avuto riguardo a te”.

So David received of her hand that which she had brought him: and he said unto her, Go up in peace to thy house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy person.

36 Ed Abigail venne da Nabal; ed ecco ch’egli faceva banchetto in casa sua; banchetto da re. Nabal aveva il cuore allegro, perch’era ebbro fuor di modo; ond’ella non gli fece sapere alcuna cosa, piccola o grande, fino allo spuntar del giorno.

And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.

37 Ma la mattina, quando gli fu passata l’ebbrezza, la moglie raccontò a Nabal queste cose; allora gli si freddò il cuore, ed ei rimase come un sasso.

And it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, that his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.

38 E circa dieci giorni dopo, l’Eterno colpì Nabal, ed egli morì.

And it came to pass about ten days after, that Jehovah smote Nabal, so that he died.

39 Quando Davide seppe che Nabal era morto, disse: “Sia benedetto l’Eterno, che m’ha reso giustizia dell’oltraggio fattomi da Nabal, e ha preservato il suo servo dal far del male! La malvagità di Nabal, l’Eterno l’ha fatta ricadere sul capo di lui!” Poi Davide mandò da Abigail a proporle di diventar sua moglie.

And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be Jehovah, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept back his servant from evil: and the evil-doing of Nabal hath Jehovah returned upon his own head. And David sent and spake concerning Abigail, to take her to him to wife.

40 E i servi di Davide vennero da Abigail a Carmel, e le parlarono così: “Davide ci ha mandati da te, perché vuol prenderti in moglie”.

And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David hath sent us unto thee, to take thee to him to wife.

41 Allora ella si levò, si prostrò con la faccia a terra, e disse: “Ecco, la tua serva farà da schiava, per lavare i piedi ai servi del mio signore”.

And she arose, and bowed herself with her face to the earth, and said, Behold, thy handmaid is a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.

42 Poi Abigail si levò tosto, montò sopra un asino, e, seguìta da cinque fanciulle tenne dietro ai messi di Davide, e divenne sua moglie.

And Abigail hasted, and arose, and rode upon an ass, with five damsels of hers that followed her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.

43 Davide sposò anche Ahinoam di Izreel, e ambedue furono sue mogli.

David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they became both of them his wives.

44 Or Saul avea dato Mical sua figliuola, moglie di Davide, a Palti, figliuolo di Laish, che era di Gallim.

Now Saul had given Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was of Gallim.
