Luca 23
1 Tutta l'assemblea si alzò, lo condussero da Pilato
The whole council rose and took him to Pilate.
2 e cominciarono ad accusarlo: «Abbiamo trovato costui che sobillava il nostro popolo, impediva di dare tributi a Cesare e affermava di essere il Cristo re».
There they started to accuse him. “We found this man deceiving our nation, telling people not to pay taxes to Caesar, and claiming he is Messiah, a king,” they said.
3 Pilato lo interrogò: «Sei tu il re dei Giudei?». Ed egli rispose: «Tu lo dici».
“Are you the King of the Jews?” Pilate asked him. “So you say,” replied Jesus.
4 Pilato disse ai sommi sacerdoti e alla folla: «Non trovo nessuna colpa in quest'uomo».
Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I don't find this man guilty of any crime.”
5 Ma essi insistevano: «Costui solleva il popolo, insegnando per tutta la Giudea, dopo aver cominciato dalla Galilea fino a qui».
But they insisted, saying, “He is inciting rebellion all over Judea with his teachings, from Galilee to right here in Jerusalem.”
6 Udito ciò, Pilato domandò se era Galileo
When he heard this, Pilate asked, “Is this man a Galilean?”
7 e, saputo che apparteneva alla giurisdizione di Erode, lo mandò da Erode che in quei giorni si trovava anch'egli a Gerusalemme.
When he discovered that Jesus came under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod who was also in Jerusalem at the time.
8 Vedendo Gesù, Erode si rallegrò molto, perché da molto tempo desiderava vederlo per averne sentito parlare e sperava di vedere qualche miracolo fatto da lui.
Herod was very pleased to see Jesus since he had wanted to meet him for a long time. He had heard about Jesus and was hoping to see him perform a miracle.
9 Lo interrogò con molte domande, ma Gesù non gli rispose nulla.
He asked Jesus many questions, but Jesus did not answer him at all.
10 C'erano là anche i sommi sacerdoti e gli scribi, e lo accusavano con insistenza.
The chief priests and religious teachers stood there, angrily accusing him.
11 Allora Erode, con i suoi soldati, lo insultò e lo schernì, poi lo rivestì di una splendida veste e lo rimandò a Pilato.
Herod and his soldiers treated Jesus with contempt and mocked him. Then they placed a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.
12 In quel giorno Erode e Pilato diventarono amici; prima infatti c'era stata inimicizia tra loro.
From that day on Herod and Pilate were friends—before that they had been enemies.
13 Pilato, riuniti i sommi sacerdoti, le autorità e il popolo,
Pilate called together the chief priests, rulers, and the people,
14 disse: «Mi avete portato quest'uomo come sobillatore del popolo; ecco, l'ho esaminato davanti a voi, ma non ho trovato in lui nessuna colpa di quelle di cui lo accusate;
and told them, “You brought this man before me, accusing him of inciting the people to rebellion. I've carefully examined him in your presence, and do not find him guilty of the charges you have brought against him.
15 e neanche Erode, infatti ce l'ha rimandato. Ecco, egli non ha fatto nulla che meriti la morte.
Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. He has done nothing that demands he should be put to death.
16 Perciò, dopo averlo severamente castigato, lo rilascerò».
So I will have him flogged and then release him.”
18 Ma essi si misero a gridare tutti insieme: «A morte costui! Dacci libero Barabba!».
But they all shouted together, “Kill this man, and release Barabbas to us.”
19 Questi era stato messo in carcere per una sommossa scoppiata in città e per omicidio.
(Barabbas had been put in prison for taking part in a rebellion in the city, and for murder.)
20 Pilato parlò loro di nuovo, volendo rilasciare Gesù.
Pilate wanted to release Jesus, so spoke to them again.
21 Ma essi urlavano: «Crocifiggilo, crocifiggilo!».
But they kept on shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22 Ed egli, per la terza volta, disse loro: «Ma che male ha fatto costui? Non ho trovato nulla in lui che meriti la morte. Lo castigherò severamente e poi lo rilascerò».
Pilate asked them for the third time, “But why? What crime has he committed? I don't find any reason for executing him. So I will have him flogged and then release him.”
23 Essi però insistevano a gran voce, chiedendo che venisse crocifisso; e le loro grida crescevano.
But they continued insisting with loud shouts, demanding that he be crucified. Their shouting succeeded,
24 Pilato allora decise che la loro richiesta fosse eseguita.
and Pilate gave the sentence they demanded.
25 Rilasciò colui che era stato messo in carcere per sommossa e omicidio e che essi richiedevano, e abbandonò Gesù alla loro volontà.
He released the man imprisoned for rebellion and murder, but he sent Jesus to be put to death in accordance with their demands.
26 Mentre lo conducevano via, presero un certo Simone di Cirène che veniva dalla campagna e gli misero addosso la croce da portare dietro a Gesù.
As the soldiers led him away, they seized a man called Simon of Cyrene, who had come in from the countryside. They put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.
27 Lo seguiva una gran folla di popolo e di donne che si battevano il petto e facevano lamenti su di lui.
A large crowd followed him, along with women who were mourning and lamenting him.
28 Ma Gesù, voltandosi verso le donne, disse: «Figlie di Gerusalemme, non piangete su di me, ma piangete su voi stesse e sui vostri figli.
Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, don't weep for me. Weep for yourselves and your children.
29 Ecco, verranno giorni nei quali si dirà: Beate le sterili e i grembi che non hanno generato e le mammelle che non hanno allattato.
For the time is coming when they'll say, ‘Happy are those who are childless, and those who never had babies, and those who never nursed them.’
30 Allora cominceranno a dire ai monti: Cadete su di noi! e ai colli: Copriteci!
They'll say to the mountains, ‘Fall down on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’
31 Perché se trattano così il legno verde, che avverrà del legno secco?».
For if they do this to wood that is green, what will happen when it's dried out?”
32 Venivano condotti insieme con lui anche due malfattori per essere giustiziati.
They also took two others who were criminals to be executed with him.
33 Quando giunsero al luogo detto Cranio, là crocifissero lui e i due malfattori, uno a destra e l'altro a sinistra.
When they reached the place called the Skull they crucified him together with the criminals, one on his right, and the other on his left.
34 Gesù diceva: «Padre, perdonali, perché non sanno quello che fanno». Dopo essersi poi divise le sue vesti, le tirarono a sorte.
Jesus said, “Father, please forgive them, for they don't know what they're doing.” They divided up his clothes by throwing dice for them.
35 Il popolo stava a vedere, i capi invece lo schernivano dicendo: «Ha salvato gli altri, salvi se stesso, se è il Cristo di Dio, il suo eletto».
The people stood and watched and the leaders sneered at Jesus. “He saved others, let him save himself, if he is really God's Messiah, the Chosen One,” they said.
36 Anche i soldati lo schernivano, e gli si accostavano per porgergli dell'aceto, e dicevano:
The soldiers also mocked him, coming up to him and offering him wine vinegar, saying,
37 «Se tu sei il re dei Giudei, salva te stesso».
“If you're the King of the Jews, then save yourself.”
38 C'era anche una scritta, sopra il suo capo: Questi è il re dei Giudei.
Above Jesus was a sign on which it was written, “This is the King of the Jews.”
39 Uno dei malfattori appesi alla croce lo insultava: «Non sei tu il Cristo? Salva te stesso e anche noi!».
One of the criminals hanging there joined in the insults against Jesus. “Aren't you the Messiah?” he asked. “Then save yourself—and us too!”
40 Ma l'altro lo rimproverava: «Neanche tu hai timore di Dio e sei dannato alla stessa pena?
But the other criminal disagreed and argued with him, “Don't you fear God even when you're suffering the same punishment?” he asked.
41 Noi giustamente, perché riceviamo il giusto per le nostre azioni, egli invece non ha fatto nulla di male».
“For us the sentence is right since we're being punished for what we did, but this man didn't do anything wrong.”
42 E aggiunse: «Gesù, ricordati di me quando entrerai nel tuo regno».
Then he said, “Jesus, please remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
43 Gli rispose: «In verità ti dico, oggi sarai con me nel paradiso».
Jesus replied, “I promise you today you will be with me in paradise.”
44 Era verso mezzogiorno, quando il sole si eclissò e si fece buio su tutta la terra fino alle tre del pomeriggio.
By this time it was around noon and darkness fell over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
45 Il velo del tempio si squarciò nel mezzo.
The sun's light was shut out, and the Temple veil was torn in two.
46 Gesù, gridando a gran voce, disse: «Padre, nelle tue mani consegno il mio spirito ». Detto questo spirò.
Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, I place myself in your hands.” Having said this he breathed his last.
47 Visto ciò che era accaduto, il centurione glorificava Dio: «Veramente quest'uomo era giusto».
When the centurion saw what had happened he praised God and said, “Surely this man was innocent.”
48 Anche tutte le folle che erano accorse a questo spettacolo, ripensando a quanto era accaduto, se ne tornavano percuotendosi il petto.
When all the crowds that had come to watch saw what happened they went home beating their chests in grief.
49 Tutti i suoi conoscenti assistevano da lontano e così le donne che lo avevano seguito fin dalla Galilea, osservando questi avvenimenti.
But all those who knew Jesus, including the women who'd followed him from Galilee, watched from a distance.
50 C'era un uomo di nome Giuseppe, membro del sinedrio, persona buona e giusta.
There was a man called Joseph who was good and honest. He was a member of the council,
51 Non aveva aderito alla decisione e all'operato degli altri. Egli era di Arimatèa, una città dei Giudei, e aspettava il regno di Dio.
but he hadn't agreed with its decisions and actions. He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea, and was waiting expectantly for the kingdom of God.
52 Si presentò a Pilato e chiese il corpo di Gesù.
Joseph went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body.
53 Lo calò dalla croce, lo avvolse in un lenzuolo e lo depose in una tomba scavata nella roccia, nella quale nessuno era stato ancora deposto.
Once he'd taken it down, he wrapped it in a linen cloth. He laid Jesus in an unused tomb cut into the rock.
54 Era il giorno della parascève e gia splendevano le luci del sabato.
It was preparation day and the Sabbath would soon begin.
55 Le donne che erano venute con Gesù dalla Galilea seguivano Giuseppe; esse osservarono la tomba e come era stato deposto il corpo di Gesù,
The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee had followed Joseph and had seen the tomb where Jesus' body had been laid.
56 poi tornarono indietro e prepararono aromi e oli profumati. Il giorno di sabato osservarono il riposo secondo il comandamento.
They returned home and prepared spices and ointments. But on the Sabbath they rested, observing the commandment.
