Deuteronomio 4
1 Ora dunque, Israele, ascolta le leggi e le norme che io vi insegno, perché le mettiate in pratica, perché viviate ed entriate in possesso del paese che il Signore, Dio dei vostri padri, sta per darvi.
Now, therefore, O Israel, hearken thou unto the statutes, and unto the regulations, which, I, am teaching you, to do [them], —to the end ye may live and enter and possess the land, which, Yahweh, the God of your fathers, is giving unto you.
2 Non aggiungerete nulla a ciò che io vi comando e non ne toglierete nulla; ma osserverete i comandi del Signore Dio vostro che io vi prescrivo.
Ye shall not add unto the word which, I, am commanding you, neither shall ye take away therefrom, —that ye may keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, which, I, am commanding you.
3 I vostri occhi videro ciò che il Signore ha fatto a Baal-Peor: come il Signore tuo Dio abbia distrutto in mezzo a te quanti avevano seguito Baal-Peor;
Yours are the eyes, that have seen what Yahweh did in Baal-peor, for every man who went after Baal-peor, did Yahweh thy God destroy out of thy midst;
4 ma voi che vi manteneste fedeli al Signore vostro Dio siete oggi tutti in vita.
but, ye who kept on cleaving unto Yahweh your God, alive, are ye all to-day.
5 Vedete, io vi ho insegnato leggi e norme come il Signore mio Dio mi ha ordinato, perché le mettiate in pratica nel paese in cui state per entrare per prenderne possesso.
See! I have taught you statutes, and regulations, as Yahweh my God commanded me, —that ye should do so, in the midst of the land whereinto ye are entering to possess it.
6 Le osserverete dunque e le metterete in pratica perché quella sarà la vostra saggezza e la vostra intelligenza agli occhi dei popoli, i quali, udendo parlare di tutte queste leggi, diranno: Questa grande nazione è il solo popolo saggio e intelligente.
Therefore shall ye observe, and do [them], for that, will be your wisdom, and discernment, in the eyes of the peoples, —who will hear all these statutes, and will say—Nevertheless, a people wise and discerning, is this great nation.
7 Infatti qual grande nazione ha la divinità così vicina a sé, come il Signore nostro Dio è vicino a noi ogni volta che lo invochiamo?
For what great nation is there which hath gods nigh unto it, —like Yahweh our God, whensoever we have cried out unto him.
8 E qual grande nazione ha leggi e norme giuste come è tutta questa legislazione che io oggi vi espongo?
Or what great nation which hath righteous statutes and regulations, like all this law, which, I, am setting before you to-day?
9 Ma guardati e guardati bene dal dimenticare le cose che i tuoi occhi hanno viste: non ti sfuggano dal cuore, per tutto il tempo della tua vita. Le insegnerai anche ai tuoi figli e ai figli dei tuoi figli.
Only take thou heed to thyself and keep thy soul diligently, so that thou forget not the things which thine own eyes have seen, and so that they go not out of thy heart, all the days of thy life, —but thou shalt make them known unto thy sons and unto thy sons’ sons: —
10 Ricordati del giorno in cui sei comparso davanti al Signore tuo Dio sull'Oreb, quando il Signore mi disse: Radunami il popolo e io farò loro udire le mie parole, perché imparino a temermi finché vivranno sulla terra, e le insegnino ai loro figli.
What day thou didst stand before Yahweh thy God, in Horeb, when Yahweh said unto me, Gather unto me the people, that I may let them hear my words, —which they must learn that they may revere me all the days which they are living upon the soil, their children also, must they teach.
11 Voi vi avvicinaste e vi fermaste ai piedi del monte; il monte ardeva nelle fiamme che si innalzavano in mezzo al cielo; vi erano tenebre, nuvole e oscurità.
So ye drew near and stood, under the mountain. Now, the mountain, was burning with fire, up to the midst of the heavens, —darkness, cloud, and thick gloom.
12 Il Signore vi parlò dal fuoco; voi udivate il suono delle parole ma non vedevate alcuna figura; vi era soltanto una voce.
Then spake Yahweh unto you out of the midst of the fire, —a voice of words, ye were hearing, no form, were ye seeing, there was only a voice.
13 Egli vi annunciò la sua alleanza, che vi comandò di osservare, cioè i dieci comandamenti, e li scrisse su due tavole di pietra.
Then declared he unto you his covenant which he commanded you to do, the ten words, —and wrote them upon two tables of stone.
14 A me in quel tempo il Signore ordinò di insegnarvi leggi e norme, perché voi le metteste in pratica nel paese in cui state per entrare per prenderne possesso.
And unto me, gave Yahweh command, at that time, to teach you statutes and regulations, —that ye should do them, in the land whereinto ye are passing over to possess it.
15 Poiché dunque non vedeste alcuna figura, quando il Signore vi parlò sull'Oreb dal fuoco, state bene in guardia per la vostra vita,
Ye must take diligent heed, therefore unto your own souls, for ye saw no manner of form, on the day Yahweh spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire;
16 perché non vi corrompiate e non vi facciate l'immagine scolpita di qualche idolo, la figura di maschio o femmina,
lest ye should break faith, and make you an image, a form of any likeness, —a model of male or female;
17 la figura di qualunque animale, la figura di un uccello che vola nei cieli,
a model of any beast that is in the earth, —a model of any winged bird, that flieth in the heavens;
18 la figura di una bestia che striscia sul suolo, la figura di un pesce che vive nelle acque sotto la terra;
a model of any thing that creepeth on the ground, —a model of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth;
19 perché, alzando gli occhi al cielo e vedendo il sole, la luna, le stelle, tutto l'esercito del cielo, tu non sia trascinato a prostrarti davanti a quelle cose e a servirle; cose che il Signore tuo Dio ha abbandonato in sorte a tutti i popoli che sono sotto tutti i cieli.
or lest thou shouldest lift up thine eyes towards the heavens and see the sun and the moon, and the stars—all the host of the heavens, and shouldest be seduced, and shouldest bow thyself down to them and he led to serve them, —the which Yahweh thy God hath assigned unto all the peoples under all the heavens;
20 Voi invece, il Signore vi ha presi, vi ha fatti uscire dal crogiuolo di ferro, dall'Egitto, perché foste un popolo che gli appartenesse, come oggi difatti siete.
whereas you, hath Yahweh taken, and brought you forth out of a smelting-pot of iron, out of Egypt, —that ye might become his own inherited people as at this day.
21 Il Signore si adirò contro di me per causa vostra e giurò che io non avrei passato il Giordano e non sarei entrato nella fertile terra che il Signore Dio tuo ti dà in eredità.
But, Yahweh shewed himself angry with me, for your sakes, —and sware that I should not pass over the Jordan, and that I should not enter into the good land, which, Yahweh thy God, is giving unto thee as an inheritance;
22 Perché io devo morire in questo paese, senza passare il Giordano; ma voi lo dovete passare e possiederete quella fertile terra.
for, I, am about to die in this land, I am not to pass over the Jordan, —but, ye, are to pass over, and possess this good land.
23 Guardatevi dal dimenticare l'alleanza che il Signore vostro Dio ha stabilita con voi e dal farvi alcuna immagine scolpita di qualunque cosa, riguardo alla quale il Signore tuo Dio ti ha dato un comando.
Take heed to yourselves lest ye forget the covenant of Yahweh your God, which he hath solemnised with you, —and so make for yourselves an image, the form of anything, the which Yahweh thy God hath forbidden thee;
24 Poiché il Signore tuo Dio è fuoco divoratore, un Dio geloso.
seeing that as for Yahweh thy God, a consuming fire, he is, —a jealous GOD.
25 Quando avrete generato figli e nipoti e sarete invecchiati nel paese, se vi corromperete, se vi farete immagini scolpite di qualunque cosa, se farete ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore vostro Dio per irritarlo,
When thou shalt beget sons, and sons’ sons, and become careless in the land and break faith and make an image the form of any thing, and shalt do the thing that is wicked in the eyes of Yahweh thy God provoking him to anger,
26 io chiamo oggi in testimonio contro di voi il cielo e la terra: voi certo perirete, scomparendo dal paese di cui state per prendere possesso oltre il Giordano. Voi non vi rimarrete lunghi giorni, ma sarete tutti sterminati.
I take both the heavens and the earth to witness against you to-day, that ye shall, perish, speedily, from off the land which ye are passing over the Jordan to possess, —ye shall not prolong your days thereupon; for, ye shall surely be laid waste;
27 Il Signore vi disperderà fra i popoli e non resterete più di un piccolo numero fra le nazioni dove il Signore vi condurrà.
and Yahweh will scatter you among the peoples, —and ye shall have left remaining of you men easily counted, among the nations whither Yahweh will drive you;
28 Là servirete a dei fatti da mano d'uomo, dei di legno e di pietra, i quali non vedono, non mangiano, non odorano.
and ye will serve there gods made by the hands of man, —wood or stone, which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell.
29 Ma di là cercherai il Signore tuo Dio e lo troverai, se lo cercherai con tutto il cuore e con tutta l'anima.
If thou shalt seek from thence, Yahweh thy God, then shalt thou find him, —when thou shalt search after him with all thy heart, and with all thy soul.
30 Con angoscia, quando tutte queste cose ti saranno avvenute, negli ultimi giorni, tornerai al Signore tuo Dio e ascolterai la sua voce,
In thy distress, when all these things have found thee out—in the afterpart of the days, thou wilt return unto Yahweh thy God, and wilt hearken to his voice.
31 poiché il Signore Dio tuo è un Dio misericordioso; non ti abbandonerà e non ti distruggerà, non dimenticherà l'alleanza che ha giurata ai tuoi padri.
For, a GOD of compassion, is Yahweh thy God, he will not forsake thee neither will he destroy thee, —nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.
32 Interroga pure i tempi antichi, che furono prima di te: dal giorno in cui Dio creò l'uomo sulla terra e da un'estremità dei cieli all'altra, vi fu mai cosa grande come questa e si udì mai cosa simile a questa?
For ask, I pray you, of the former days which were before thee, even from the day when God created man upon the earth, yea from one end of the heavens even to the other end of the heavens, —whether aught was ever brought to pass, like this great thing, or was ever heard of like it:
33 Che cioè un popolo abbia udito la voce di Dio parlare dal fuoco, come l'hai udita tu, e che rimanesse vivo?
Did a people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of fire, as, thou, didst hear, and yet live?
34 O ha mai tentato un dio di andare a scegliersi una nazione in mezzo a un'altra con prove, segni, prodigi e battaglie, con mano potente e braccio teso e grandi terrori, come fece per voi il Signore vostro Dio in Egitto, sotto i vostri occhi?
Or did a god ever make trial of entering in to take unto him a nation out of the midst of a nation, by provings, by signs and by wonders and by fighting, and by a firm hand and by a stretched-out arm, and by great terrors, —according to all that Yahweh your God did for you in Egypt, before your eyes?
35 Tu sei diventato spettatore di queste cose, perché tu sappia che il Signore è Dio e che non ve n'è altri fuori di lui.
Thou, wast allowed to see that thou mightest know, that Yahweh, he is God, there is none other than he alone.
36 Dal cielo ti ha fatto udire la sua voce per educarti; sulla terra ti ha mostrato il suo grande fuoco e tu hai udito le sue parole di mezzo al fuoco.
Out of the heavens, he let thee hear his voice to instruct thee, —and, upon the earth, he let thee see his great fire, and his own words, thou didst hear out of the midst of the fire.
37 Perché ha amato i tuoi padri, ha scelto la loro posterità e ti ha fatto uscire dall'Egitto con la sua stessa presenza e con grande potenza,
And because that he loved thy fathers, therefore chose he his seed after him, —and brought thee forth with his presence with his great might, out of Egypt;
38 per scacciare dinanzi a te nazioni più grandi e più potenti di te, per farti entrare nel loro paese e dartene il possesso, come appunto è oggi.
to dispossess nations, greater and stronger than thou from before thee, —to bring thee in. to give unto thee their land for an inheritance: As at this day.
39 Sappi dunque oggi e conserva bene nel tuo cuore che il Signore è Dio lassù nei cieli e quaggiù sulla terra; e non ve n'è altro.
So then thou must consider to-day, and bring it back to thy heart, that, Yahweh, he is God in the heavens above and upon the earth beneath, —there is none other.
40 Osserva dunque le sue leggi e i suoi comandi che oggi ti dò, perché sia felice tu e i tuoi figli dopo di te e perché tu resti a lungo nel paese che il Signore tuo Dio ti dà per sempre».
So shalt thou keep his statutes and his commandments which, I, am commanding thee to-day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy sons after thee, —and to the end thou mayest prolong thy days upon the soil, which Yahweh thy God, is giving thee, all the days.
41 In quel tempo Mosè scelse tre città oltre il Giordano verso oriente,
Then, did Moses set apart three cities, over the Jordan, —towards the rising of the sun:
42 perché servissero di asilo all'omicida che avesse ucciso il suo prossimo involontariamente, senza averlo odiato prima, perché potesse aver salva la vita fuggendo in una di quelle città.
that the manslayer might flee thither who should slay his neighbour unawares, he, not having hated him, aforetime, —and might flee unto one of these cities, and live:
43 Esse furono Beser, nel deserto, sull'altipiano, per i Rubeniti; Ramot, in Gàlaad, per i Gaditi, e Golan, in Basan, per i Manassiti.
namely Bezer, in the desert of the table-land, for the Reubenites, —and Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.
44 Questa è la legge che Mosè espose agli Israeliti.
This, then is the law which Moses set before the sons of Israel:
45 Queste sono le istruzioni, le leggi e le norme che Mosè diede agli Israeliti quando furono usciti dall'Egitto,
These, are the testimonies, and the statutes and the regulations, —which Moses spake unto the sons of Israel when they came forth out of Egypt:
46 oltre il Giordano, nella valle di fronte a Bet-Peor, nel paese di Sicon re degli Amorrei che abitava in Chesbon, e che Mosè e gli Israeliti sconfissero quando furono usciti dall'Egitto.
over the Jordan in the valley over against Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, —whom Moses and the sons of Israel smote, when they came forth out of Egypt:
47 Essi avevano preso possesso del paese di lui e del paese di Og re di Basan - due re Amorrei che stavano oltre il Giordano, verso oriente -,
so they took possession of his land, and the land of Og king of Bashan the two kings of the Amorites, who were over the Jordan, —towards the rising of the sun;
48 da Aroer, che è sull'orlo della valle dell'Arnon, fino al monte Sirion, cioè l'Ermon,
from Aroer which is on the edge of the ravine of Arnon, even unto Mount Sion, the same, is Hermon;
49 con tutta l'Araba oltre il Giordano, verso oriente, fino al mare dell'Araba sotto le pendici del Pisga.
and all the waste plain over the Jordan, towards sunrise, even unto the sea of the waste plain, —under the slopes of the Pisgah.
