1 रिहोबोयाम शेकेम नगर गया, क्योंकि उसके राजाभिषेक के उद्देश्य से सारा इस्राएल वहां इकट्ठा हुआ था.
Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel was coming to Shechem to make him king.
2 जब नेबाथ के पुत्र यरोबोअम ने यह सुना, जो मिस्र देश में रह रहा था—वह राजा शलोमोन से भागकर यहीं ठहरा हुआ था.
When Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard this (for he was in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt.
3 इस्राएलियों ने संदेश भेज उसे वहां से बुलवा लिया. जब यरोबोअम और सारा इस्राएल वहां इकट्ठा हुआ, उन्होंने रिहोबोयाम से यह विनती की:
So they sent and called him, and Jeroboam and all Israel came; they spoke to Rehoboam and said,
4 “आपके पिता ने हमारा जूआ बहुत ही भारी कर दिया था; अब तो आपके पिता द्वारा कराई गई मेहनत और इस भारी जूए को हल्का कर दीजिए. हम आपकी सेवा हमेशा करते रहेंगे.”
“Your father made our yoke difficult. Now therefore, make your father's hard work easier, and lighten the heavy yoke that he put on us, and we will serve you.”
5 उसने उन्हें उत्तर दिया, “आप लोग तीन दिन बाद दोबारा मेरे पास आइए.” तब वे लौट गए.
Rehoboam said to them, “Come again to me after three days.” So the people left.
6 इसी समय राजा रिहोबोयाम ने उन पुरनियों से सलाह ली, जो उसके पिता शलोमोन के जीवन भर उनके सेवक रहे थे. उसने पूछा, “मेरे लिए आपकी क्या राय है? मैं इन लोगों को क्या उत्तर दूं?”
King Rehoboam consulted with the old men who had stood before Solomon his father while he was alive; he said, “How would you advise me to bring an answer to these people?”
7 उन्होंने उसे उत्तर दिया, “यदि आप इन लोगों के प्रति दयालु रहेंगे, उन्हें खुश रखते हुए उनसे प्रोत्साहन के शब्द कहेंगे, वे हमेशा आपकी सेवा करते रहेंगे.”
They spoke to him and said, “If you are good to this people and please them, and say good words to them, then they will always be your servants.”
8 मगर रिहोबोयाम ने पुरनियों की इस सलाह को छोड़ दिया और जाकर उन युवाओं से सलाह ली, जो उसी के साथ बड़े हुए थे और जो उसके सेवक थे.
But Rehoboam ignored the advice of the old men that they had given him, and consulted with the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.
9 उसने उनसे पूछा “इन लोगों के लिए तुम्हारी राय क्या है, जो लोग मुझसे विनती करने आए थे, ‘आपके पिता द्वारा हम पर रखा गया जूआ हल्का कर दीजिए’?”
He said to them, “What advice do you give me, so that we may answer the people who spoke to me and said, 'Lighten the yoke that your father put on us'?”
10 उसके साथ साथ पले बढ़े युवाओं ने उसे उत्तर दिया, “जिन लोगों ने आपसे यह विनती की है, ‘आपके पिता द्वारा हम पर रखे गए भारी जूए को हल्का कर दीजिए,’ उन्हें यह उत्तर दीजिए, ‘मेरे हाथ की छोटी उंगली ही मेरे पिता की कमर से मोटी है!
The young men who had grown up with Rehoboam spoke to him, saying, “This is how you should speak to the people who told you that your father Solomon made their yoke heavy, but that you must make it lighter. This is what you should say to them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's waist.
11 यदि मेरे पिता ने तुम पर भारी जूआ लादा था, तो मैं उसे और भी अधिक भारी बना दूंगा. मेरे पिता ने तो तुम्हें नियंत्रण में रखने के लिए कोड़े इस्तेमाल किए थे, मगर मैं इसके लिए बिच्छू का इस्तेमाल करूंगा.’”
So now, although my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father punished you with whips, but I will punish you with scorpions.'”
12 जब यरोबोअम और सारी भीड़ तीन दिन बाद रिहोबोयाम के सामने आई, जैसा राजा द्वारा बताया गया था, “मेरे पास तीन दिन के बाद आना.”
So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king said, “Come back to me on the third day.”
13 पुरनियों की सलाह को ठुकराते हुए राजा ने उनसे बहुत कड़ी बातें की.
Rehoboam spoke to them harshly, ignoring the advice of the old men.
14 राजा ने उन्हें युवाओं के द्वारा दी गई सलाह के अनुसार उत्तर दिया, “मेरे पिता ने तुम्हारा जूआ भारी किया था, तो मैं इसे और ज्यादा भारी कर दूंगा. मेरे पिता ने अगर तुम पर कोड़े चलाए थे, तो अब मैं तुम पर बिच्छू ड़ंक के समान कोड़े बरसाऊंगा.”
He spoke to them following the advice of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it. My father punished you with whips, but I will punish you with scorpions.”
15 राजा ने लोगों की एक न सुनी क्योंकि यह सारी बातें याहवेह परमेश्वर द्वारा तय की जा चुकी थी, कि वह अपनी कही हुई बात को महिमा दें, जो उन्होंने नेबाथ के पुत्र यरोबोअम से शीलो के भविष्यद्वक्ता अहीयाह द्वारा की थी.
So the king did not listen to the people, for it was a turn in events brought about by God, that Yahweh might carry out his word that Ahijah the Shilonite had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat.
16 जब सारे इस्राएल के सामने यह बात आ गई कि राजा ने उनकी विनती की ओर ध्यान ही नहीं दिया है, उन्होंने राजा से यह कह दिया: “क्या भाग है दावीद में हमारा? क्या मीरास है यिशै पुत्र में हमारी? लौट जाओ अपने-अपने तंबुओं में, इस्राएल! दावीद, तुम अपने ही वंश को संभालते रहो!” तब सारे इस्राएली अपने-अपने घर लौट गए.
When all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered him and said, “What share do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse! Each of you should go back to his tent, Israel. Now see to your own house, David.” So all Israel returned to their tents.
17 मगर यहूदिया प्रदेशवासी इस्राएलियों पर रिहोबोयाम का शासन हो गया.
But as for the people of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18 राजा रिहोबोयाम ने हदोराम को, जो बेगार श्रमिकों का मुखिया था, इस्राएलियों के पास भेजा. इस्राएलियों ने उसका पथराव किया कि उसकी हत्या हो गई. यह देख राजा रिहोबोयाम ने बिना देर किए रथ जुतवाया और वह येरूशलेम को भाग गया.
Then King Rehoboam sent Adoniram, who was over the forced laborers, but the people of Israel stoned him to death with stones. King Rehoboam fled quickly in his chariot to Jerusalem.
19 इस प्रकार इस्राएल राज्य आज तक दावीद के वंश के विरुद्ध विद्रोह की स्थिति में है.
So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
