ירמיה 26

1 בראשית ממלכות יהויקים בן יאשיהו--מלך יהודה היה הדבר הזה מאת יהוה לאמר

In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, came this word from YHWH, saying,

2 כה אמר יהוה עמד בחצר בית יהוה ודברת על כל ערי יהודה הבאים להשתחות בית יהוה את כל הדברים אשר צויתיך לדבר אליהם אל תגרע דבר

"Thus says YHWH: Stand in the court of YHWH's house, and speak to all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in YHWH's house, all the words that I command you to speak to them; do not diminish a word.

3 אולי ישמעו--וישבו איש מדרכו הרעה ונחמתי אל הרעה אשר אנכי חשב לעשות להם מפני רע מעלליהם

It may be they will listen, and turn every man from his evil way; that I may relent of the evil which I purpose to do to them because of the evil of their doings.

4 ואמרת אליהם כה אמר יהוה אם לא תשמעו אלי ללכת בתורתי אשר נתתי לפניכם

You shall tell them, 'Thus says YHWH: If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law, which I have set before you,

5 לשמע על דברי עבדי הנבאים אשר אנכי שלח אליכם והשכם ושלח ולא שמעתם

to listen to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I send to you, even rising up early and sending them, but you have not listened;

6 ונתתי את הבית הזה כשלה ואת העיר הזאתה (הזאת) אתן לקללה לכל גוי הארץ

then will I make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.'"

7 וישמעו הכהנים והנבאים וכל העם את ירמיהו מדבר את הדברים האלה בבית יהוה

The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of YHWH.

8 ויהי ככלות ירמיהו לדבר את כל אשר צוה יהוה לדבר אל כל העם ויתפשו אתו הכהנים והנביאים וכל העם לאמר--מות תמות

It happened, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that YHWH had commanded him to speak to all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold on him, saying, "You shall surely die.

9 מדוע נבית בשם יהוה לאמר כשלו יהיה הבית הזה והעיר הזאת תחרב מאין יושב ויקהל כל העם אל ירמיהו בבית יהוה

Why have you prophesied in the name of YHWH, saying, 'This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without inhabitant?'" All the people were gathered to Jeremiah in the house of YHWH.

10 וישמעו שרי יהודה את הדברים האלה ויעלו מבית המלך בית יהוה וישבו בפתח שער יהוה החדש

When the officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king's house to the house of YHWH; and they sat in the entry of the New Gate of YHWH's house.

11 ויאמרו הכהנים והנבאים אל השרים ואל כל העם לאמר משפט מות לאיש הזה כי נבא אל העיר הזאת כאשר שמעתם באזניכם

Then spoke the priests and the prophets to the officials and to all the people, saying, "This man is worthy of death; for he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your ears."

12 ויאמר ירמיהו אל כל השרים ואל כל העם לאמר יהוה שלחני להנבא אל הבית הזה ואל העיר הזאת את כל הדברים אשר שמעתם

Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and to all the people, saying, "YHWH sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that you have heard.

13 ועתה היטיבו דרכיכם ומעלליכם ושמעו בקול יהוה אלהיכם וינחם יהוה--אל הרעה אשר דבר עליכם

Now therefore amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of YHWH your God; and YHWH will relent of the disaster that he has pronounced against you.

14 ואני הנני בידכם עשו לי כטוב וכישר בעיניכם

But as for me, look, I am in your hands; do with me as is good and right in your eyes.

15 אך ידע תדעו כי אם ממתים אתם אתי--כי דם נקי אתם נתנים עליכם ואל העיר הזאת ואל ישביה כי באמת שלחני יהוה עליכם לדבר באזניכם את כל הדברים האלה

Only know for certain that, if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood on yourselves, and on this city, and on its inhabitants; for of a truth YHWH has sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears."

16 ויאמרו השרים וכל העם אל הכהנים ואל הנביאים אין לאיש הזה משפט מות כי בשם יהוה אלהינו דבר אלינו

Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and to the prophets: "This man is not worthy of death; for he has spoken to us in the name of YHWH our God."

17 ויקמו אנשים מזקני הארץ ויאמרו אל כל קהל העם לאמר

Then rose up certain of the elders of the land, and spoke to all the assembly of the people, saying,

18 מיכיה (מיכה) המורשתי היה נבא בימי חזקיהו מלך יהודה ויאמר אל כל עם יהודה לאמר כה אמר יהוה צבאות ציון שדה תחרש וירושלים עיים תהיה והר הבית לבמות יער

"Micah the Morashtite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah; and he spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, 'Thus says YHWH of hosts: "Zion shall be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest."'

19 ההמת המתהו חזקיהו מלך יהודה וכל יהודה הלא ירא את יהוה--ויחל את פני יהוה וינחם יהוה אל הרעה אשר דבר עליהם ואנחנו עשים רעה גדולה--על נפשותינו

Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Did he not fear YHWH, and seek the favor of YHWH, and YHWH relented of the disaster which he had pronounced against them? Thus should we commit great evil against our own souls.

20 וגם איש היה מתנבא בשם יהוה אוריהו בן שמעיהו מקרית היערים וינבא על העיר הזאת ועל הארץ הזאת ככל דברי ירמיהו

"There was also a man who prophesied in the name of YHWH, Uriah the son of Shemaiah of Kiriath Jearim; and he prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah.

21 וישמע המלך יהויקים וכל גבוריו וכל השרים את דבריו ויבקש המלך המיתו וישמע אוריהו וירא ויברח ויבא מצרים

And when Jehoiakim the king, with all his mighty men, and all the officials, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death; but when Uriah heard it, he was afraid, and fled, and went into Egypt.

22 וישלח המלך יהויקים אנשים--מצרים את אלנתן בן עכבור ואנשים אתו אל מצרים

And Jehoiakim the king sent men into Egypt, Elnathan the son of Achbor, and certain men with him, into Egypt;

23 ויוציאו את אוריהו ממצרים ויבאהו אל המלך יהויקים ויכהו בחרב וישלך את נבלתו אל קברי בני העם

and they fetched forth Uriah out of Egypt, and brought him to Jehoiakim the king, who killed him with the sword, and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people."

24 אך יד אחיקם בן שפן היתה את ירמיהו--לבלתי תת אתו ביד העם להמיתו

But the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death.
