ישעה 1

1 חזון ישעיהו בן אמוץ אשר חזה על יהודה וירושלם--בימי עזיהו יותם אחז יחזקיהו מלכי יהודה

The vision of Isaiah [Salvation of Yah] the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah [Praised] and Jerusalem [City of peace], in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah [Praised].

2 שמעו שמים והאזיני ארץ כי יהוה דבר בנים גדלתי ורוממתי והם פשעו בי

Sh'ma ·Hear obey·, heavens, and listen, earth; for Adonai has spoken: “I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.

3 ידע שור קנהו וחמור אבוס בעליו ישראל לא ידע עמי לא התבונן

The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master’s crib; but Israel [God prevails] does not know, my people don’t consider.”

4 הוי גוי חטא עם כבד עון--זרע מרעים בנים משחיתים עזבו את יהוה נאצו את קדוש ישראל--נזרו אחור

Ah sinful nation, a people loaded with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly! They have forsaken Adonai. They have despised the haKadosh Isra'el [the Holy One of God prevails]. They are estranged and backward.

5 על מה תכו עוד תוסיפו סרה כל ראש לחלי וכל לבב דוי

Why should you be beaten more, that you revolt more and more? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.

6 מכף רגל ועד ראש אין בו מתם פצע וחבורה ומכה טריה לא זרו ולא חבשו ולא רככה בשמן

From the sole of the foot even to the head there is no soundness in it: wounds, welts, and open sores. They haven’t been closed, neither bandaged, neither soothed with oil.

7 ארצכם שממה עריכם שרפות אש אדמתכם לנגדכם זרים אכלים אתה ושממה כמהפכת זרים

Your country is desolate. Your cities are burned with fire. Strangers devour your land in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.

8 ונותרה בת ציון כסכה בכרם כמלונה במקשה כעיר נצורה

The daughter of Zion [Mountain ridge, Marking] is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut in a field of melons, like a besieged city.

9 לולי יהוה צבאות הותיר לנו שריד כמעט--כסדם היינו לעמרה דמינו

Unless Adonai Tzva'ot [Yahweh Commander of heaven’s armies] had left to us a very small remnant, we would have been as Sodom [Burning]; we would have been like Gomorrah [Rebellious people, Tyrants].

10 שמעו דבר יהוה קציני סדם האזינו תורת אלהינו עם עמרה

Sh'ma ·Hear obey· Adonai’s word, you rulers of Sodom [Burning]! Listen to the Torah ·Teaching· of our God, you people of Gomorrah [Rebellious people, Tyrants]!

11 למה לי רב זבחיכם יאמר יהוה שבעתי עלות אילים וחלב מריאים ודם פרים וכבשים ועתודים לא חפצתי

“What are the multitude of your sacrifices to me?,” says Adonai. “I have had enough of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed animals. I don’t delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of male goats.

12 כי תבאו לראות פני--מי בקש זאת מידכם רמס חצרי

When you come to appear before me, who has required this at your hand, to trample my courts?

13 לא תוסיפו הביא מנחת שוא--קטרת תועבה היא לי חדש ושבת קרא מקרא לא אוכל און ועצרה

Bring no more vain offerings. Incense is an abomination to me; new moons, Sabbaths, and convocations: I can’t bear with evil assemblies.

14 חדשיכם ומועדיכם שנאה נפשי היו עלי לטרח נלאיתי נשא

My soul hates your New Moons and your appointed feasts. They are a burden to me. I am weary of bearing them.

15 ובפרשכם כפיכם אעלים עיני מכם--גם כי תרבו תפלה אינני שמע ידיכם דמים מלאו

When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you. Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not sh'ma ·hear obey·. Your hands are full of blood.

16 רחצו הזכו--הסירו רע מעלליכם מנגד עיני חדלו הרע

Wash yourselves, make yourself clean. Put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes. Cease to do evil.

17 למדו היטב דרשו משפט אשרו חמוץ שפטו יתום ריבו אלמנה

Learn to do well. Seek mishpat ·justice·. Relieve the oppressed. Judge the orphan. Plead for the widow.”

18 לכו נא ונוכחה יאמר יהוה אם יהיו חטאיכם כשנים כשלג ילבינו אם יאדימו כתולע כצמר יהיו

“Come now, and let us reason together,” says Adonai: “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

19 אם תאבו ושמעתם--טוב הארץ תאכלו

If you are willing and sh'ma ·hearing obedient·, you shall eat the good of the land;

20 ואם תמאנו ומריתם--חרב תאכלו כי פי יהוה דבר

but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured with the sword; for the mouth of Adonai has spoken it.”

21 איכה היתה לזונה קריה נאמנה מלאתי משפט צדק ילין בה--ועתה מרצחים

How the faithful city has become a prostitute! She was full of mishpat ·justice·; righteousness lodged in her, but now murderers.

22 כספך היה לסיגים סבאך מהול במים

Your silver has become dross, your wine mixed with water.

23 שריך סוררים וחברי גנבים--כלו אהב שחד ורדף שלמנים יתום לא ישפטו וריב אלמנה לא יבוא אליהם

Your princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves. Everyone 'ahav ·affectionately loves· bribes, and follows after rewards. They don’t judge the orphan, neither does the cause of the widow come to them.

24 לכן נאם האדון יהוה צבאות--אביר ישראל הוי אנחם מצרי ואנקמה מאויבי

Therefore the Lord, Adonai Tzva'ot [Yahweh Commander of heaven’s armies], the Mighty One of Israel [God prevails], says: “Ah, I will get relief from my adversaries, and avenge myself on my enemies;

25 ואשיבה ידי עליך ואצרף כבר סיגיך ואסירה כל בדיליך

and I will turn my hand on you, thoroughly purge away your dross, and will take away all your tin.

26 ואשיבה שפטיך כבראשנה ויעציך כבתחלה אחרי כן יקרא לך עיר הצדק--קריה נאמנה

I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you shall be called ‘The city of righteousness, a faithful town.’

27 ציון במשפט תפדה ושביה בצדקה

Zion [Mountain ridge, Marking] shall be redeemed with mishpat ·justice·, and her converts with righteousness.

28 ושבר פשעים וחטאים יחדו ועזבי יהוה יכלו

But the destruction of transgressors and sinners shall be together, and those who forsake Adonai shall be consumed.

29 כי יבשו מאילים אשר חמדתם ותחפרו--מהגנות אשר בחרתם

For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which you have desired, and you shall be confounded for the gardens that you have chosen.

30 כי תהיו כאלה נבלת עלה וכגנה אשר מים אין לה

For you shall be as an oak whose leaf fades, and as a garden that has no water.

31 והיה החסן לנערת ופעלו לניצוץ ובערו שניהם יחדו ואין מכבה

The strong will be like tinder, and his work like a spark. They will both burn together, and no one will quench them.”
