Κατα Λουκαν 23
1 Καὶ ἀναστὰν ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος αὐτῶν ἤγαγον αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸν Πιλᾶτον.
The whole council rose and took him to Pilate.
2 ἤρξαντο δὲ κατηγορεῖν αὐτοῦ λέγοντες· Τοῦτον εὕραμεν διαστρέφοντα τὸ ἔθνος ⸀ἡμῶνκαὶ κωλύοντα ⸂φόρους Καίσαρι διδόναι ⸀καὶλέγοντα ⸀αὑτὸνχριστὸν βασιλέα εἶναι.
There they started to accuse him. “We found this man deceiving our nation, telling people not to pay taxes to Caesar, and claiming he is Messiah, a king,” they said.
3 ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος ⸀ἠρώτησεναὐτὸν λέγων· Σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων; ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ ἔφη· Σὺ λέγεις.
“Are you the King of the Jews?” Pilate asked him. “So you say,” replied Jesus.
4 ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος εἶπεν πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ὄχλους· Οὐδὲν εὑρίσκω αἴτιον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ.
Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I don't find this man guilty of any crime.”
5 οἱ δὲ ἐπίσχυον λέγοντες ὅτι Ἀνασείει τὸν λαὸν διδάσκων καθʼ ὅλης τῆς Ἰουδαίας, ⸀καὶἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἕως ὧδε.
But they insisted, saying, “He is inciting rebellion all over Judea with his teachings, from Galilee to right here in Jerusalem.”
6 Πιλᾶτος δὲ ⸀ἀκούσαςἐπηρώτησεν εἰ ὁ ἄνθρωπος Γαλιλαῖός ἐστιν,
When he heard this, Pilate asked, “Is this man a Galilean?”
7 καὶ ἐπιγνοὺς ὅτι ἐκ τῆς ἐξουσίας Ἡρῴδου ἐστὶν ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν πρὸς Ἡρῴδην, ὄντα καὶ αὐτὸν ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐν ταύταις ταῖς ἡμέραις.
When he discovered that Jesus came under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod who was also in Jerusalem at the time.
8 ὁ δὲ Ἡρῴδης ἰδὼν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐχάρη λίαν, ἦν γὰρ ⸂ἐξ ἱκανῶν χρόνων θέλων ἰδεῖν αὐτὸν διὰ τὸ ⸀ἀκούεινπερὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἤλπιζέν τι σημεῖον ἰδεῖν ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ γινόμενον.
Herod was very pleased to see Jesus since he had wanted to meet him for a long time. He had heard about Jesus and was hoping to see him perform a miracle.
9 ἐπηρώτα δὲ αὐτὸν ἐν λόγοις ἱκανοῖς· αὐτὸς δὲ οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίνατο αὐτῷ.
He asked Jesus many questions, but Jesus did not answer him at all.
10 εἱστήκεισαν δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς εὐτόνως κατηγοροῦντες αὐτοῦ.
The chief priests and religious teachers stood there, angrily accusing him.
11 ἐξουθενήσας δὲ αὐτὸν ⸀καὶὁ Ἡρῴδης σὺν τοῖς στρατεύμασιν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐμπαίξας ⸀περιβαλὼνἐσθῆτα λαμπρὰν ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν τῷ Πιλάτῳ.
Herod and his soldiers treated Jesus with contempt and mocked him. Then they placed a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.
12 ἐγένοντο δὲ φίλοι ὅ τε ⸂Ἡρῴδης καὶ ὁ Πιλᾶτος ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ μετʼ ἀλλήλων· προϋπῆρχον γὰρ ἐν ἔχθρᾳ ὄντες πρὸς ⸀αὑτούς
From that day on Herod and Pilate were friends—before that they had been enemies.
13 Πιλᾶτος δὲ συγκαλεσάμενος τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ τὸν λαὸν
Pilate called together the chief priests, rulers, and the people,
14 εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Προσηνέγκατέ μοι τὸν ἄνθρωπον τοῦτον ὡς ἀποστρέφοντα τὸν λαόν, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν ἀνακρίνας ⸀οὐθὲνεὗρον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ αἴτιον ὧν κατηγορεῖτε κατʼ αὐτοῦ.
and told them, “You brought this man before me, accusing him of inciting the people to rebellion. I've carefully examined him in your presence, and do not find him guilty of the charges you have brought against him.
15 ἀλλʼ οὐδὲ Ἡρῴδης, ⸂ἀνέπεμψεν γὰρ αὐτὸν πρὸς ἡμᾶς· καὶ ἰδοὺ οὐδὲν ἄξιον θανάτου ἐστὶν πεπραγμένον αὐτῷ·
Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. He has done nothing that demands he should be put to death.
16 παιδεύσας οὖν αὐτὸν ⸀ἀπολύσω
So I will have him flogged and then release him.”
18 ⸀Ἀνέκραγονδὲ παμπληθεὶ λέγοντες· Αἶρε τοῦτον, ἀπόλυσον δὲ ἡμῖν ⸀τὸνΒαραββᾶν·
But they all shouted together, “Kill this man, and release Barabbas to us.”
19 ὅστις ἦν διὰ στάσιν τινὰ γενομένην ἐν τῇ πόλει καὶ φόνον ⸂βληθεὶς ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ.
(Barabbas had been put in prison for taking part in a rebellion in the city, and for murder.)
20 πάλιν ⸀δὲὁ Πιλᾶτος ⸀προσεφώνησεν, θέλων ἀπολῦσαι τὸν Ἰησοῦν.
Pilate wanted to release Jesus, so spoke to them again.
21 οἱ δὲ ἐπεφώνουν λέγοντες· ⸂Σταύρου σταύρου αὐτόν.
But they kept on shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22 ὁ δὲ τρίτον εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Τί γὰρ κακὸν ἐποίησεν οὗτος; οὐδὲν αἴτιον θανάτου εὗρον ἐν αὐτῷ· παιδεύσας οὖν αὐτὸν ἀπολύσω.
Pilate asked them for the third time, “But why? What crime has he committed? I don't find any reason for executing him. So I will have him flogged and then release him.”
23 οἱ δὲ ἐπέκειντο φωναῖς μεγάλαις αἰτούμενοι αὐτὸν σταυρωθῆναι, καὶ κατίσχυον αἱ φωναὶ ⸀αὐτῶν
But they continued insisting with loud shouts, demanding that he be crucified. Their shouting succeeded,
24 ⸀καὶΠιλᾶτος ἐπέκρινεν γενέσθαι τὸ αἴτημα αὐτῶν·
and Pilate gave the sentence they demanded.
25 ἀπέλυσεν δὲ τὸν διὰ στάσιν καὶ φόνον βεβλημένον ⸀εἰςφυλακὴν ὃν ᾐτοῦντο, τὸν δὲ Ἰησοῦν παρέδωκεν τῷ θελήματι αὐτῶν.
He released the man imprisoned for rebellion and murder, but he sent Jesus to be put to death in accordance with their demands.
26 Καὶ ὡς ἀπήγαγον αὐτόν, ἐπιλαβόμενοι ⸂Σίμωνά τινα Κυρηναῖον ἐρχόμενον ἀπʼ ἀγροῦ ἐπέθηκαν αὐτῷ τὸν σταυρὸν φέρειν ὄπισθεν τοῦ Ἰησοῦ.
As the soldiers led him away, they seized a man called Simon of Cyrene, who had come in from the countryside. They put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.
27 Ἠκολούθει δὲ αὐτῷ πολὺ πλῆθος τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ γυναικῶν ⸀αἳἐκόπτοντο καὶ ἐθρήνουν αὐτόν.
A large crowd followed him, along with women who were mourning and lamenting him.
28 στραφεὶς δὲ πρὸς αὐτὰς ⸀ὁἸησοῦς εἶπεν· Θυγατέρες Ἰερουσαλήμ, μὴ κλαίετε ἐπʼ ἐμέ· πλὴν ἐφʼ ἑαυτὰς κλαίετε καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα ὑμῶν,
Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, don't weep for me. Weep for yourselves and your children.
29 ὅτι ἰδοὺ ἔρχονται ἡμέραι ἐν αἷς ἐροῦσιν Μακάριαι αἱστεῖραι καὶ ⸀αἱ κοιλίαι αἳ οὐκ ἐγέννησαν καὶ μαστοὶ οἳ οὐκ ⸀ἔθρεψαν
For the time is coming when they'll say, ‘Happy are those who are childless, and those who never had babies, and those who never nursed them.’
30 τότε ἄρξονται λέγειν τοῖς ὄρεσιν· Πέσετε ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς, καὶ τοῖς βουνοῖς· Καλύψατε ἡμᾶς·
They'll say to the mountains, ‘Fall down on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’
31 ὅτι εἰ ἐν ⸀τῷὑγρῷ ξύλῳ ταῦτα ποιοῦσιν, ἐν τῷ ξηρῷ τί γένηται;
For if they do this to wood that is green, what will happen when it's dried out?”
32 Ἤγοντο δὲ καὶ ἕτεροι ⸂κακοῦργοι δύο σὺν αὐτῷ ἀναιρεθῆναι.
They also took two others who were criminals to be executed with him.
33 καὶ ὅτε ⸀ἦλθονἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τὸν καλούμενον Κρανίον, ἐκεῖ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτὸν καὶ τοὺς κακούργους, ὃν μὲν ἐκ δεξιῶν ὃν δὲ ἐξ ἀριστερῶν.
When they reached the place called the Skull they crucified him together with the criminals, one on his right, and the other on his left.
34 ⸂ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἔλεγεν· Πάτερ, ἄφες αὐτοῖς, οὐ γὰρ οἴδασιν τί ποιοῦσιν⸃ διαμεριζόμενοι δὲ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ἔβαλον ⸀κλήρους
Jesus said, “Father, please forgive them, for they don't know what they're doing.” They divided up his clothes by throwing dice for them.
35 καὶ εἱστήκει ὁ λαὸς θεωρῶν. ἐξεμυκτήριζον δὲ καὶ οἱ ⸀ἄρχοντεςλέγοντες· Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν, σωσάτω ἑαυτόν, εἰ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ χριστὸς ⸂τοῦ θεοῦ, ὁ⸃ ἐκλεκτός.
The people stood and watched and the leaders sneered at Jesus. “He saved others, let him save himself, if he is really God's Messiah, the Chosen One,” they said.
36 ⸀ἐνέπαιξανδὲ αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ στρατιῶται προσερχόμενοι, ⸀ὄξοςπροσφέροντες αὐτῷ
The soldiers also mocked him, coming up to him and offering him wine vinegar, saying,
37 καὶ λέγοντες· Εἰ σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων, σῶσον σεαυτόν.
“If you're the King of the Jews, then save yourself.”
38 ἦν δὲ καὶ ⸀ἐπιγραφὴἐπʼ ⸀αὐτῷ Ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων ⸀οὗτος
Above Jesus was a sign on which it was written, “This is the King of the Jews.”
39 Εἷς δὲ τῶν κρεμασθέντων κακούργων ἐβλασφήμει αὐτόν ⸀λέγων ⸀Οὐχὶσὺ εἶ ὁ χριστός; σῶσον σεαυτὸν καὶ ἡμᾶς.
One of the criminals hanging there joined in the insults against Jesus. “Aren't you the Messiah?” he asked. “Then save yourself—and us too!”
40 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἕτερος ⸂ἐπιτιμῶν αὐτῷ ἔφη· Οὐδὲ φοβῇ σὺ τὸν θεόν, ὅτι ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ κρίματι εἶ;
But the other criminal disagreed and argued with him, “Don't you fear God even when you're suffering the same punishment?” he asked.
41 καὶ ἡμεῖς μὲν δικαίως, ἄξια γὰρ ὧν ἐπράξαμεν ἀπολαμβάνομεν· οὗτος δὲ οὐδὲν ἄτοπον ἔπραξεν.
“For us the sentence is right since we're being punished for what we did, but this man didn't do anything wrong.”
42 καὶ ⸀ἔλεγεν Ἰησοῦ, μνήσθητί ⸀μουὅταν ἔλθῃς ⸂ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου.
Then he said, “Jesus, please remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
43 καὶ εἶπεν ⸀αὐτῷ Ἀμήν ⸂σοι λέγω σήμερον μετʼ ἐμοῦ ἔσῃ ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ.
Jesus replied, “I promise you today you will be with me in paradise.”
44 ⸂Καὶ ἦν ⸀ἤδηὡσεὶ ὥρα ἕκτη καὶ σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφʼ ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης
By this time it was around noon and darkness fell over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
45 ⸂τοῦ ἡλίου ἐκλιπόντος, ἐσχίσθη ⸀δὲτὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ μέσον.
The sun's light was shut out, and the Temple veil was torn in two.
46 καὶ φωνήσας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Πάτερ, εἰς χεῖράς σου ⸀παρατίθεμαιτὸ πνεῦμά μου. ⸂τοῦτο δὲ εἰπὼν ἐξέπνευσεν.
Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, I place myself in your hands.” Having said this he breathed his last.
47 Ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ ἑκατοντάρχης τὸ γενόμενον ⸀ἐδόξαζεντὸν θεὸν λέγων· Ὄντως ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος δίκαιος ἦν.
When the centurion saw what had happened he praised God and said, “Surely this man was innocent.”
48 καὶ πάντες οἱ συμπαραγενόμενοι ὄχλοι ἐπὶ τὴν θεωρίαν ταύτην, ⸀θεωρήσαντεςτὰ γενόμενα, ⸀τύπτοντεςτὰ στήθη ὑπέστρεφον.
When all the crowds that had come to watch saw what happened they went home beating their chests in grief.
49 εἱστήκεισαν δὲ πάντες οἱ γνωστοὶ ⸀αὐτῷ⸀μακρόθεν καὶ γυναῖκες αἱ ⸀συνακολουθοῦσαιαὐτῷ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας, ὁρῶσαι ταῦτα.
But all those who knew Jesus, including the women who'd followed him from Galilee, watched from a distance.
50 Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρὀνόματι Ἰωσὴφ βουλευτὴς ὑπάρχων, ⸀ἀνὴρ ἀγαθὸς καὶ δίκαιος—
There was a man called Joseph who was good and honest. He was a member of the council,
51 οὗτος οὐκ ἦν συγκατατεθειμένος τῇ βουλῇ καὶ τῇ πράξει αὐτῶν— ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας πόλεως τῶν Ἰουδαίων, ὃς ⸀προσεδέχετοτὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ,
but he hadn't agreed with its decisions and actions. He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea, and was waiting expectantly for the kingdom of God.
52 οὗτος προσελθὼν τῷ Πιλάτῳ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ,
Joseph went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body.
53 καὶ ⸀καθελὼνἐνετύλιξεν αὐτὸ σινδόνι, καὶ ἔθηκεν ⸀αὐτὸνἐν μνήματι λαξευτῷ οὗ οὐκ ἦν ⸂οὐδεὶς οὔπω κείμενος.
Once he'd taken it down, he wrapped it in a linen cloth. He laid Jesus in an unused tomb cut into the rock.
54 καὶ ἡμέρα ἦν ⸂παρασκευῆς, καὶ⸃ σάββατον ἐπέφωσκεν.
It was preparation day and the Sabbath would soon begin.
55 κατακολουθήσασαι δὲ ⸀αἱγυναῖκες, αἵτινες ἦσαν συνεληλυθυῖαι ⸂ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας αὐτῷ, ἐθεάσαντο τὸ μνημεῖον καὶ ὡς ἐτέθη τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ,
The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee had followed Joseph and had seen the tomb where Jesus' body had been laid.
56 ὑποστρέψασαι δὲ ἡτοίμασαν ἀρώματα καὶ μύρα. Καὶ τὸ μὲν σάββατον ἡσύχασαν κατὰ τὴν ἐντολήν,
They returned home and prepared spices and ointments. But on the Sabbath they rested, observing the commandment.
