Παροιμίαι 6
1 Υιέ μου, εάν έγεινας εγγυητής διά τον φίλον σου, εάν έδωκας την χείρα σου εις ξένον,
My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, thou hast engaged fast thy hand to a stranger.
2 επαγιδεύθης διά των λόγων του στόματός σου, επιάσθης διά των λόγων του στόματός σου·
Thou art ensnared with the words of thy mouth, and caught with thy own words.
3 Κάμε λοιπόν τούτο, υιέ μου, και σώζου, επειδή ήλθες εις τας χείρας του φίλου σου· ύπαγε, μη αποκάμης, και βίαζε τον φίλον σου.
Do therefore, my son, what I say, and deliver thyself: because thou art fallen into the hand of thy neighbour. Run about, make haste, stir up thy friend:
4 Μη δώσης ύπνον εις τους οφθαλμούς σου, μηδέ νυσταγμόν εις τα βλεφαρά σου·
Give not sleep to thy eyes, neither let thy eyelids slumber.
5 Σώζου, ως δορκάδιον εκ χειρός του κυνηγού και ως πτηνόν εκ χειρός του ιξευτού.
Deliver thyself as a doe from the hand, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Ύπαγε προς τον μύρμηκα, ω οκνηρέ· παρατήρησον τας οδούς αυτού και γίνου σοφός·
Go to the ant, O sluggard, and consider her ways, and learn wisdom:
7 όστις μη έχων άρχοντα, επιστάτην ή κυβερνήτην,
Which, although she hath no guide, nor master, nor captain,
8 ετοιμάζει την τροφήν αυτού το θέρος, συνάγει τας τροφάς αυτού εν τω θερισμώ.
Provideth her meat for herself in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.
9 Έως πότε θέλεις κοιμάσθαι, οκνηρέ; πότε θέλεις σηκωθή εκ του ύπνου σου;
How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou rise out of thy sleep?
10 Ολίγος ύπνος, ολίγος νυσταγμός, ολίγη συμπλοκή των χειρών εις τον ύπνον·
Thou wilt sleep a little, thou wilt slumber a little, thou wilt fold thy hands a little to sleep:
11 Έπειτα η πτωχεία σου έρχεται ως ταχυδρόμος, και η ένδειά σου ως ανήρ ένοπλος.
And want shall come upon thee, as a traveller, and poverty as a man armed. But if thou be diligent, thy harvest shall come as a fountain, and want shall flee far from thee.
12 Ο αχρείος άνθρωπος, ο κακότροπος άνθρωπος, περιπατεί με στόμα διεστραμμένον·
A man that is an apostate, an unprofitable man, walketh with a perverse mouth,
13 Κάμνει νεύμα διά των οφθαλμών αυτού, σημαίνει διά των ποδών αυτού, διδάσκει διά των δακτύλων αυτού·
He winketh with the eyes, presseth with the foot, speaketh with the finger.
14 μετά διεστραμμένης καρδίας μηχανάται κακά εν παντί καιρώ· εγείρει έριδας·
With a wicked heart he deviseth evil, and at all times he soweth discord.
15 διά τούτο εξαίφνης θέλει επέλθει η απώλεια αυτού· εξαίφνης θέλει συντριφθή ανιάτως.
To such a one his destruction shall presently come, and he shall suddenly be destroyed, and shall no longer have any remedy.
16 Ταύτα τα εξ μισεί ο Κύριος, επτά μάλιστα βδελύττεται η ψυχή αυτού·
Six things there are, which the Lord hateth, and the seventh his soul detesteth:
17 οφθαλμούς υπερηφάνους, γλώσσαν ψευδή και χείρας εκχεούσας αίμα αθώον,
Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
18 καρδίαν μηχανευομένην λογισμούς κακούς, πόδας τρέχοντας ταχέως εις το κακοποιείν,
A heart that deviseth wicked plots, feet that are swift to run into mischief,
19 μάρτυρα ψευδή λαλούντα ψεύδος και τον εμβάλλοντα έριδας μεταξύ αδελφών.
A deceitful witness that uttereth lies, and him that soweth discord among brethren.
20 Υιέ μου, φύλαττε την εντολήν του πατρός σου, και μη απορρίψης τον νόμον της μητρός σου.
My son, beep the commandments of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother.
21 Περίαψον αυτά διαπαντός επί της καρδίας σου, περίδεσον αυτά περί τον τράχηλόν σου.
Bind them in thy heart continually, and put them about thy neck.
22 Όταν περιπατής, θέλει σε οδηγεί· όταν κοιμάσαι, θέλει σε φυλάττει· και όταν εξυπνήσης, θέλει συνομιλεί μετά σου.
When thou walkest, let them go with thee: when thou sleepest, let them keep thee; and when thou awakest, talk with them.
23 Διότι λύχνος είναι η εντολή και φως ο νόμος, και οι έλεγχοι της παιδείας οδός ζωής·
Because the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
24 διά να σε φυλάττωσιν από κακής γυναικός, από κολακείας γλώσσης γυναικός αλλοτρίας.
That they may keep thee from the evil woman, and from the flattering tongue of the stranger.
25 Μη ορεχθής το κάλλος αυτής εν τη καρδία σου· και ας μη σε θηρεύση διά των βλεφάρων αυτής.
Let not thy heart covet her beauty, be not caught with her winks:
26 Διότι εξ αιτίας γυναικός πόρνης καταντά τις έως τμήματος άρτου, η δε μοιχαλίς θηρεύει την πολύτιμον ψυχήν.
For the price of a harlot is scarce one loaf: but the woman catcheth the precious soul of a man.
27 Δύναταί τις να βάλη πυρ εις τον κόλπον αυτού, και τα ιμάτια αυτού να μη καώσι;
Can a man hide fire in his bosom, and his garments not burn?
28 Δύναταί τις να περιπατήση επ' ανθράκων πυρός, και οι πόδες αυτού να μη κατακαώσιν;
Or can he walk upon hot coals, and his feet not be burnt?
29 Ούτω και ο εισερχόμενος προς την γυναίκα του πλησίον αυτού· όστις εγγίζει αυτήν, δεν θέλει αθωωθή.
So he that goeth in to his neighbour’s wife, shall not be clean when he shall touch her.
30 Τον κλέπτην δεν αποστρέφονται, εάν κλέπτη διά να χορτάση την ψυχήν αυτού, όταν πεινά·
The fault is not so great when a man hath stolen: for he stealeth to fill his hungry soul:
31 αλλ' εάν πιασθή, θέλει αποδώσει επταπλάσια· θέλει δώσει πάντα τα υπάρχοντα της οικίας αυτού.
And if he be taken he shall restore sevenfold, and shall give up all the substance of his house.
32 Όστις όμως μοιχεύει με γυναίκα, είναι ενδεής φρενών· απώλειαν φέρει εις την ψυχήν αυτού, όστις πράττει τούτο.
But he that is an adulterer, for the folly of his heart shall destroy his own soul:
33 Πληγάς και ατιμίαν θέλει υποφέρει· και το όνειδος αυτού δεν θέλει εξαλειφθή.
He gathereth to himself shame and dishonour, and his reproach shall not be blotted out:
34 Διότι η ζηλοτυπία είναι μανία του ανδρός, και δεν θέλει δείξει έλεος εις την ημέραν της εκδικήσεως.
Because the jealousy and rage of the husband will not spare in the day of revenge,
35 Δεν θέλει δεχθή ουδέν λύτρον· ουδέ θέλει εξιλεωθή, και αν πολλαπλασιάσης τα δώρα.
Nor will he yield to any man’s prayers, nor will he accept for satisfaction ever so many gifts.
