Παραλειπομένων Αʹ 19

1 Μετά δε ταύτα απέθανεν ο Νάας βασιλεύς των υιών Αμμών, και εβασίλευσεν αντ' αυτού ο υιός αυτού.

And it happened after this, that Nahash the king of the people of Ammon died, and his son Hanun reigned in his place.

2 Και είπεν ο Δαβίδ, Θέλω κάμει έλεος προς Ανούν τον υιόν του Νάας, επειδή ο πατήρ αυτού έκαμεν έλεος προς εμέ. Και απέστειλεν ο Δαβίδ πρέσβεις, διά να παρηγορήση αυτόν περί του πατρός αυτού. Και ήλθον οι δούλοι του Δαβίδ εις την γην των υιών Αμμών προς τον Ανούν, διά να παρηγορήσωσιν αυτόν.

David said, "I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me." So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. David's servants came into the land of the people of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

3 Και είπον οι άρχοντες των υιών Αμμών προς τον Ανούν, Νομίζεις ότι ο Δαβίδ τιμών τον πατέρα σου απέστειλε παρηγορητάς προς σε; δεν ήλθον οι δούλοι αυτού προς σε διά να ερευνήσωσι και να κατασκοπεύσωσι και να καταστρέψωσι τον τόπον;

But the leaders of the people of Ammon said to Hanun, "Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Haven't his servants come to you to search, to overthrow, and to spy out the land?"

4 Και επίασεν ο Ανούν τους δούλους του Δαβίδ και εξύρισεν αυτούς και απέκοψε το ήμισυ των ιματίων αυτών μέχρι των γλουτών, και απέπεμψεν αυτούς.

So Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

5 Υπήγαν δε και απήγγειλαν προς τον Δαβίδ περί των ανδρών. Και απέστειλεν εις συνάντησιν αυτών· επειδή οι άνδρες ήσαν ητιμασμένοι σφόδρα. Και είπεν ο βασιλεύς, Καθήσατε εν Ιεριχώ εωσού αυξηθώσιν οι πώγωνές σας, και επιστρέψατε.

Then there went certain persons, and told David how the men were served. He sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. The king said, "Stay at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return."

6 Βλέποντες δε οι υιοί Αμμών ότι ήσαν βδελυκτοί εις τον Δαβίδ, έπεμψαν ο Ανούν και οι υιοί Αμμών χίλια τάλαντα αργυρίου, διά να μισθώσωσιν εις εαυτούς αμάξας και ιππέας εκ της Μεσοποταμίας και εκ της Συρίας-μααχά και εκ της Σωβά.

When the people of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the people of Ammon sent one thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Aram Maacah, and out of Zobah.

7 Και εμίσθωσαν εις εαυτούς τριάκοντα δύο χιλιάδας αμάξας και τον βασιλέα της Μααχά μετά του λαού αυτού, οίτινες ήλθον και εστρατοπέδευσαν κατέναντι της Μεδεβά. Και συναχθέντες οι υιοί Αμμών εκ των πόλεων αυτών, ήλθον να πολεμήσωσι.

So they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maacah and his people, who came and camped before Medeba. The people of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

8 Και ότε ήκουσε ταύτα ο Δαβίδ, απέστειλε τον Ιωάβ και άπαν το στράτευμα των δυνατών.

When David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the army of the mighty men.

9 Και εξήλθον οι υιοί Αμμών και παρετάχθησαν εις πόλεμον κατά την πύλην της πόλεως· οι δε βασιλείς οι ελθόντες ήσαν καθ' εαυτούς εν τη πεδιάδι.

The people of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the gate of the city: and the kings who had come were by themselves in the field.

10 Βλέπων δε ο Ιωάβ ότι η μάχη παρετάχθη εναντίον αυτού έμπροσθεν και όπισθεν, εξέλεξεν εκ πάντων των εκλεκτών του Ισραήλ και παρέταξεν αυτούς εναντίον των Συρίων.

Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Arameans.

11 Το δε υπόλοιπον του λαού έδωκεν εις την χείρα του Αβισαί αδελφού αυτού, και παρετάχθησαν εναντίον των υιών Αμμών.

The rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and they put themselves in array against the people of Ammon.

12 Και είπεν, Εάν οι Σύριοι υπερισχύσωσι κατ' εμού, τότε συ θέλεις με σώσει· εάν δε οι υιοί Αμμών υπερισχύσωσι κατά σου, τότε εγώ θέλω σε σώσει·

He said, "If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to help me; but if the people of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will help you.

13 ανδρίζου, και ας κραταιωθώμεν υπέρ του λαού ημών και υπέρ των πόλεων του Θεού ημών· ο δε Κύριος ας κάμη το αρεστόν εις τους οφθαλμούς αυτού.

Be courageous, and let us be strong for our people, and for the cities of our God. May the LORD do that which seems good to him."

14 Και προσήλθεν ο Ιωάβ και ο λαός ο μετ' αυτού εναντίον των Συρίων εις μάχην· οι δε έφυγον απ' έμπροσθεν αυτού.

So Joab and the people who were with him drew near before the Arameans to the battle; and they fled before him.

15 Και ότε είδον οι υιοί Αμμών ότι οι Σύριοι έφυγον, έφυγον και αυτοί απ' έμπροσθεν του Αβισαί του αδελφού αυτού και εισήλθον εις την πόλιν. Και ο Ιωάβ ήλθεν εις Ιερουσαλήμ.

When the people of Ammon saw that the Arameans had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

16 Ιδόντες δε οι Σύριοι ότι κατετροπώθησαν έμπροσθεν του Ισραήλ, απέστειλαν μηνυτάς και εξήγαγον τους Συρίους τους πέραν του ποταμού· και Σωφάκ, ο αρχιστράτηγος του Αδαρέζερ, επορεύετο έμπροσθεν αυτών.

When the Arameans saw that they were defeated by Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Arameans who were beyond the River, with Shobach the captain of the army of Hadadezer at their head.

17 Και ότε απηγγέλθη προς τον Δαβίδ, συνήθροισε πάντα τον Ισραήλ, και διέβη τον Ιορδάνην και ήλθεν επ' αυτούς και παρετάχθη εναντίον αυτών. Και ότε παρετάχθη ο Δαβίδ εις πόλεμον εναντίον των Συρίων, επολέμησαν με αυτόν.

It was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came on them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Arameans, they fought with him.

18 Και έφυγον οι Σύριοι απ' έμπροσθεν του Ισραήλ· και εξωλόθρευσεν ο Δαβίδ εκ των Συρίων επτά χιλιάδας αμαξών και τεσσαράκοντα χιλιάδας πεζών· και Σωφάχ, τον αρχιστράτηγον, εθανάτωσε.

The Arameans fled before Israel; and David killed of the Arameans the men of seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shobach the captain of the army.

19 Και ιδόντες οι δούλοι του Αδαρέζερ ότι κατετροπώθησαν έμπροσθεν του Ισραήλ, έκαμον ειρήνην μετά του Δαβίδ και έγειναν δούλοι αυτού· και δεν ήθελον πλέον οι Σύριοι να βοηθήσωσι τους υιούς Αμμών.

When the servants of Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with David, and served him: neither would the Arameans help the people of Ammon any more.
