1 Dena luoba n den sieni mi pendima jaanma n pundi, Jesu den gedi Betani, Lasala wan den fiini yua bi tinkpiba siiga n ye ya dogu nni.
Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead, was living.
2 Bi den hanbi opo mi jiema li kani. Malata den tendi ba mi jiema. Lasala den tie yaaba n ka ki di leni Jesu siiga yendo.
There a supper was given in his honour at which Martha waited, while Lazarus was one of those present at the table.
3 Maliyama den taa ya tulale n yi naadi kilo boagidima, ke li dunga yaba boncianla, ki wuli Jesu taana po ki duuni a leni o yudi. Tulale yeni nuulu den yadi ki gbieni li dieli kuli.
So Mary took a pound of choice spikenard perfume of great value, and anointed the feet of Jesus with it, and then wiped them with her hair. The whole house was filled with the scent of the perfume.
4 Judasa isikalioto, Jesu hoadikaaba siiga yendo, yua n den baan ti janbi o, den yedi:
One of the disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was about to betray Jesus, asked,
5 Be yaapo ke baa kuadi laa tulale, ku japiena kobita, ki puni aluoda yi ligi?
‘Why was not this perfume sold for a year’s wages, and the money given to poor people?’
6 Wan den maadi yeni, laa tie ke o bua aluoda ka, ama kelima o den tie sugido, wani n den kubi bi ligiboagili ki yen ñadi ban ciendi yaala lienni o yuli po.
He said this, not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and, being in charge of the purse, used to take what was put in it.
7 Jesu den yedi o: Han cedi o, o kubi laa tulale n piinma daali po yo.
‘Leave her alone,’ said Jesus, ‘so that she may keep it until the day when my body is being prepared for burial.
8 Aluoda ye yi siiga ya yogunu kuli, mini wani kan yaa ye yi siiga yogunu kuli.
The poor you always have with you, but you will not always have me.’
9 Jufinba boncianla n den gbadi, ke Jesu ye Betani, bi den cua likani. Baa den cua Jesu wani oba bebe po ka, ama bi go den bua ki le Lasala wan den fiini yua bi tinkpiba siiga moko.
Now great numbers of people found out that Jesus was at Bethany; and they came there, not only because of him, but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
10 Bi kopadicianba yudanba den juogi ki bili ke bi baa kpa Lasala.
The chief priests, however, plotted to put Lazarus, as well as Jesus, to death,
11 Kelima Lasala po, Jufinba boncianla den ha ba ki daani Jesu.
because it was owing to him that many of the people had left them, and were becoming believers in Jesus.
12 Lan den fii ki fa yaa niligu n den cua, ki baa jaani, mi jaanma den bandi ke Jesu kpendi Jelusalema.
On the following day great numbers of people who had come to the Festival, hearing that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, took palm branches,
13 Bi den pedi ikpakpabensoangi, ki tuogi o ki kpaani ki tua: U Tienu n ba ti pagidi, U Tienu n seligi yua n kpendi, o Diedo yeli nni, wani isalele yaaba bado.
and went out to meet him, shouting as they went, ‘God save him! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord – the king of Israel!’
14 Jesu den ba li hunbisaagili ki jagini li, nani idiani n yedi maama,
Having found a young donkey, Jesus seated himself on it, in accordance with the passage of scripture –
15 han da jie fini siyono dogu kelima abado kpendi na, ki jagi li hunbisaagili.
“Fear not, people of Zion. Your king is coming to you, sitting on the foal of a donkey.”
16 Jesu hoadikaaba, daa den bandi laa bonla, n bua ki yedi yaala, ama yaa yogunu ke Jesu den baa ti kpiagidi, bi den tiadi ke laa bonla kuli den diani ki maadi o yaapo yo. Lanwani bi den sua ke kuli tieni cebini opo.
His disciples did not understand all this at first; but, when Jesus had been exalted, then they remembered that these things had been said of him in scripture, and that they had done these things for him.
17 Yaaba n den ye leni Jesu, wan den yini Lasala yaa yogunu, ke o fii ki ñani likuli nni, ki fii bi tikpiba siiga kuli den tiendi opo siedi.
Meanwhile the people who were with him, when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, were telling what they had seen.
18 Ku niligu boncianla, den ñani ki tuogi o, yeni kelima bi den gbadi ke o tieni bancianma.
This, indeed, was why the crowd met him – because people had heard that he had given this sign of his mission.
19 Falisieninba den tua bi yaba: Yi laa ke yin tieni maam kuli yi kan fidi, kelima handuna kuli hoadi o.
So the Pharisees said to one another, ‘You see that you are gaining nothing! Why, all the world has run after him!’
20 Yaaba n den cua ki baa kpiagi U Tienu, mi jaanma yogunu yeni, siiga bi tianba den tie Gilekinba,
Among those who were going up to worship at the Festival were some Greeks,
21 bi den cua Filipi kani ki yedi o: Canbaa, ti bua ki le Jesu, Filipi yeni den tie Galile yaa Betisayida dogu yua.
who went to Philip of Bethsaida in Galilee, and said, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’
22 Filipi den gedi, ki waani Andile ke Andile leni Filipi kuli den yegi ki gedi, ki ban waani Jesu.
Philip went and told Andrew, and then together they went and told Jesus.
23 Jesu den guani ki yedi: O joa Bijua n baa ba ti kpiagidi yaa yogunu pundi.
This was his reply – ‘The time has come for the Son of Man to be exalted.
24 Yi moamoani yi moamoani kani n yedi yi, ke mi dibima yaa kua ki tinga nni, ki kpe mi li baa ye bonyenme, ama mi ya kua ki tinga nni ki kpe lane mi baa pa ki luoni boncianla.
In truth I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains solitary; but, if it dies, it becomes fruitful.
25 Yua n bua o miali baa biani li, ama yua n nani o miali handuna nni, o baan le li tanpoli, yaa miali n kan gbeni po. (aiōnios g166)
A person who loves their life loses it; while someone who hates their life in the present world will preserve it for eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
26 Li ya tie ke onilo tuuni n yaapo, kali wan yaa hua nni, kelima min ye naankani n tuonsoanlo moko, baa ye lankane. Yua n tuuni n po kuli, Baa baa kpiagi o.
If someone is ready to serve me, let them follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also. If a person is ready to serve me, my Father will honour them.
27 Moalane n yama yagi. Naani n baa yedi Baa faabi nni leni yaa yogunu n tiena fala bi? Ki sua laa fala po, n cuani nni ke n ye handuna nni hali moane.
Now I am distressed at heart and what can I say? Father, bring me safe through this hour – yet it was for this reason that I came to this hour –
28 Baa, kpiagi a yeli. U nialu den ñani tanpoli ki yedi: N kpiagili, n go baa kpiagili.
Father, honour your own name.’ At this there came a voice from heaven, which said, ‘I have already honoured it, and I will honour it again.’
29 Ya niligu n ye likani n den gbadi unialu yeni, bine den yedi: Ki taaga n duni, bine n yedi: Maleki n maadi leni o.
The crowd of bystanders, who heard the sound, said that it was thundering. Others said, ‘An angel has been speaking to him.’
30 Jesu den yedi ba: Laa tie mini yaapo ka, ke unialu maadi, ama u maadi yi yaapo yo.
‘It was not for my sake that the voice came,’ said Jesus, ‘but for yours.
31 Moala handuna buudi jia. Moala bi baa lu handuna bado, niinpo.
Now this world is on its trial. Now the Spirit that is ruling this world will be driven out;
32 Bi ya yugidini, ki tinga po, n baa dadi bi niba kuli yama ban cua n kani.
and I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’
33 Wan den maadi yeni, o den maadi wan baa kpe yaa kuuma, yaa maame.
By these words he indicated what death he was destined to die.
34 Ku niligu den guani ki yedi o: Ti gbadi ke Kilisiti baa ye hali yaa yogunu kuli, U Tienu balimaama tili nni, n waani ti la. Be yaapo yo ke fini mo nan yedi: Ke bi baa yugidi o Joa Bijua? ŋme n tie O Joa Bijua? (aiōn g165)
‘We,’ replied the people, ‘have learned from the Law that the Christ is to remain for ever; how is it, then, that you say that the Son of Man must be “lifted up” Who is this “Son of Man”?’ (aiōn g165)
35 Jesu den yedi ba: Mi yenma daa go baa ye yi siiga yogunu waamu po. Yin ya cuoni mani yaa yogunu kuli, ke yi pia mi yenma, ke li biigili n da cua ki ludi yi. Kelima yua n cuoni li biigili nni, naa bani wan caa naani.
‘Only a little while longer,’ answered Jesus, ‘will you have the light among you. Travel on while you have the light, so that darkness may not overtake you; he who travels in the darkness does not know where he is going.
36 Mi yenma da ye yi siiga, daani mani mi yenma yeni, ke yin fidi ki tua mi yenma bila.
While you still have the light, believe in the light, so that you may be children of light.’ After he had said this, Jesus went away, and hid himself from them.
37 Baa ke o den tieni mi bancianma, boncianla bi siiga baa den daani o.
But, though Jesus had given so many signs of his mission before their eyes, they still did not believe in him,
38 Li den tua yeni ke osawalipualo Esayi n den maadi yaa maama, n tieni, O Diedo ŋme n daani ti maama? Fini o Diedo nuu paalu den doagidi ŋme yaapo yo?
in fulfilment of the words of the prophet Isaiah, where he says – “Lord, who has believed our teaching? And to whom has the might of the Lord been revealed?”
39 Ama bi kan den fidi ki daani, kelima Esayi go den yedi:
The reason why they were unable to believe is given by Isaiah elsewhere, in these words –
40 U Tienu juani bi nuni, ki juagi bi pala, ke ban da le leni bi nuni, ki da ga leni bi pala. Ke ban da lebidi ki ha bi tuonbiadi. Min paagiba.
“He has blinded their eyes, and blunted their mind, so that they should not see with their eyes, and perceive with their mind, and turn – And I should heal them.”
41 Esayi den yedi laa bonla, yaa yogunu ke o den laa okpiagidi, ki den maadi omaama.
Isaiah said this, because he saw Christ’s glory; and it was of him that he spoke.
42 Baa leni lankuli, Jufinba yudanba siiga boncianla den daani Jesu. Ama baa den tuo ki doagidi ke bi hoadi o, kelima bi den jie Faliiseninba ke ban da deli ki ñani ba, li balimaama bangima dieli nni.
Yet for all this, even among the leading men there were many who came to believe in Jesus; but, because of the Pharisees, they did not acknowledge it, because they were afraid that they should be expelled from their synagogues;
43 Bi den tieni yeni kelima bi den bua bi nisaaliba kani ti kpiagidi ki cie U Tienu yaa kpiagidi.
for they valued honour from people more than honour from God.
44 Jesu den kpaani ki yedi: Yua n daani nni, waa daani mini bebe ka, o daani yua n soani nne.
But Jesus had proclaimed, ‘He who believes in me believes, not in me, but in him who sent me;
45 Yua n laa nni, laa yua n soani nni.
and he who sees me sees him who sent me.
46 Mini n cua ki tie mi yenma handuna nni, ke yua n daani nni, n da go ye li biigili nni.
I have come as a light into the world, so that no one who believes in me should remain in the darkness.
47 Yua n gbadi n maama, ki yie kuli mini ka baa bu leni o, kelima mii cua ki baa jia handuna buudi ka, ama n cua ki baa faabi ba.
When anyone hears my teaching and pays no heed to it, I am not his judge; for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
48 Yua n yie nni kaa ga n maamakuli pia o bujialo. Min maadi ya maama yeni, mani n baa jia obuudi li juodi daali.
He who rejects me, and disregards my teaching, has a judge already – the message which I have delivered will itself be his judge at the Last day.
49 Kelima mii maadi n yuceli maama ka, Baa yua n soani nni, wani n tuodi ki bili min baa maadi yaa maama leni min baa maadima maama.
For I have not delivered it on my own authority; but the Father, who sent me, has himself given me his command as to what I should say, and what message I should deliver.
