Johannes 18
1 Da Jesus solches gesprochen hatte, ging Er hinaus mit Seinen Jüngern über den Bach Kidron. Da war ein Garten, und in diesen ging Er und Seine Jünger hinein.
When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered.
2 Judas aber, der Ihn verriet, wußte auch den Ort, weil Jesus Sich mit Seinen Jüngern oft daselbst versammelt hatte.
Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.
3 Judas nahm nun die Kohorte und Amtsdiener der Hohenpriester und Pharisäer und kam dahin mit Fackeln und Lampen und Waffen.
Judas then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
4 Jesus nun, Der alles wußte, was über Ihn kommen sollte, kam heraus und sprach zu ihnen: Wen sucht ihr?
Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were happening to him, went out and said to them, “Who are you looking for?”
5 Sie antworteten Ihm: Jesus, den Nazarener. Spricht zu ihnen Jesus: Ich bin es. Judas aber, der Ihn verriet, stand auch bei ihnen.
They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.
6 Wie Er nun zu ihnen sprach: Ich bin es! wichen sie zurück und fielen zu Boden.
When therefore he said to them, “I am he,” they went backward and fell to the ground.
7 Da fragte Er sie abermals: Wen sucht ihr? Sie aber sagten: Jesus, den Nazarener.
Again therefore he asked them, “Who are you looking for?” They said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8 Jesus antwortete: Ich habe euch gesagt, daß Ich es bin. Wenn ihr nun Mich suchet, so lasset diese hingehen!
Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,”
9 Auf daß erfüllt würde das Wort, das Er gesprochen: Ich habe derer keinen verloren, die Du Mir gegeben hast.
that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, “Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none.”
10 Simon Petrus nun, der ein Schwert hatte, zog es heraus, schlug nach dem Knechte des Hohenpriesters und hieb ihm das rechte Ohr ab. Der Name des Knechtes aber war Malchus.
Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
11 Da sprach Jesus zu Petrus: Stecke das Schwert hinein in die Scheide! Soll Ich den Kelch nicht trinken, den Mir der Vater gegeben hat?
Jesus therefore said to Peter, “Put the sword into its sheath. The cup which the Father has given me, shall I not surely drink it?”
12 Die Kohorte nun und der Oberhauptmann und die Amtsdiener der Juden ergriffen Jesus und banden Ihn.
So the detachment, the commanding officer, and the officers of the Jews seized Jesus and bound him,
13 Und sie führten Ihn weg zuerst zu Hannas; denn er war der Schwiegervater des Kaiaphas, der selbigen Jahres Hoherpriester war.
and led him to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
14 Kaiaphas aber war es, der den Juden zuriet, es wäre zuträglich, daß ein Mensch umkäme für das Volk.
Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should perish for the people.
15 Simon Petrus aber folgte Jesus nach, und ein anderer Jünger. Selbiger Jünger aber war dem Hohenpriester bekannt und ging mit Jesus hinein in des Hohenpriesters Hof.
Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;
16 Petrus aber stand draußen vor der Tür. Da ging der andere Jünger, der dem Hohenpriester bekannt war, hinaus und sprach mit der Türhüterin und führte Petrus herein.
but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought in Peter.
17 Da sprach die Magd, die Türhüterin, zu Petrus: Bist du nicht auch von den Jüngern dieses Menschen? Spricht er: Ich bin es nicht.
Then the maid who kept the door said to Peter, “Are you also one of this man’s disciples?” He said, “I am not.”
18 Die Knechte und Amtsdiener aber standen an einem Kohlenfeuer, das sie gemacht hatten, denn es war kalt, und wärmten sich. Petrus aber stand bei ihnen und wärmte sich.
Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold. They were warming themselves. Peter was with them, standing and warming himself.
19 Der Hohepriester fragte nun Jesus über Seine Jünger und über Seine Lehre.
The high priest therefore asked Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.
20 Jesus antwortete ihm: Ich habe frei heraus geredet zu der Welt. Ich habe allezeit in der Synagoge und im Heiligtum gelehrt, wo alle Juden zusammenkommen und habe nichts im Verborgenen geredet.
Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet. I said nothing in secret.
21 Was fragst du Mich? Frage die, so gehört haben, was Ich zu ihnen redete. Siehe, dieselben wissen, was Ich sagte.
Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them. Behold, they know the things which I said.”
22 Da Er solches sagte, gab einer der Amtsdiener, der dabeistand, Jesus einen Backenstreich und sagte: Antwortest Du also dem Hohenpriester?
When he had said this, one of the officers standing by slapped Jesus with his hand, saying, “Do you answer the high priest like that?”
23 Jesus antwortete ihm: Habe Ich böse geredet, so zeuge von dem Bösen, habe Ich aber wohl geredet, was schlägst du Mich?
Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, testify of the evil; but if well, why do you beat me?”
24 Hannas sandte Ihn gebunden zu Kaiaphas, dem Hohenpriester.
Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.
25 Simon Petrus aber stand und wärmte sich: Da sagten sie zu ihm: Bist nicht auch du von Seinen Jüngern? Er leugnete und sagte: Ich bin es nicht.
Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, “You aren’t also one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”
26 Spricht zu ihm einer der Knechte des Hohenpriesters, ein Verwandter dessen, dem Petrus das Ohr abhieb: Sah ich dich nicht in dem Garten bei Ihm?
One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of him whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?”
27 Da leugnete Petrus abermals, und alsbald krähte der Hahn.
Peter therefore denied it again, and immediately the rooster crowed.
28 Da führten sie Jesus von Kaiaphas in das Richthaus. Es war aber am Morgen. Und sie gingen nicht selbst hinein in das Richthaus, auf daß sie sich nicht verunreinigten, sondern das Pascha essen möchten.
They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. It was early, and they themselves didn’t enter into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
29 Pilatus kam dann heraus zu ihnen und sprach: Was für Klage bringt ihr wider diesen Menschen?
Pilate therefore went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”
30 Sie antworteten und sprachen zu ihm: Wäre Dieser nicht ein Übeltäter, wir hätten Ihn dir nicht überantwortet.
They answered him, “If this man weren’t an evildoer, we wouldn’t have delivered him up to you.”
31 Da sprach Pilatus zu ihnen: Nehmt ihr Ihn und richtet Ihn nach eurem Gesetz. Da sprachen die Juden zu ihm: Es ist uns nicht erlaubt, jemand zu töten.
Pilate therefore said to them, “Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.” Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is illegal for us to put anyone to death,”
32 Auf daß erfüllt würde das Wort Jesu, das Er sprach, indem Er anzeigte, welches Todes Er sterben würde.
that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying by what kind of death he should die.
33 Pilatus ging nun wiederum hinein in das Richthaus und rief Jesus und sprach zu Ihm: Bist Du der Juden König?
Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, called Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
34 Jesus antwortete ihm: Sagst du solches von dir selbst, oder haben dir es andere von Mir gesagt?
Jesus answered him, “Do you say this by yourself, or did others tell you about me?”
35 Pilatus antwortete: Bin Ich ein Jude? Deine Völkerschaft und die Hohenpriester haben Dich mir überantwortet. Was hast Du getan?
Pilate answered, “I’m not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What have you done?”
36 Jesus antwortete: Mein Reich ist nicht aus dieser Welt. Wäre Mein Reich aus dieser Welt, so würden Meine Diener ringen, daß Ich den Juden nicht überantwortet würde. Nun ist aber Mein Reich nicht von hinnen.
Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn’t be delivered to the Jews. But now my Kingdom is not from here.”
37 Da sprach Pilatus zu Ihm: Also bist Du König? Jesus antwortete: Du sagst es. Ich bin König. Ich bin dazu geboren und bin dazu in die Welt gekommen, daß Ich für die Wahrheit zeuge. Jeder, der aus der Wahrheit ist, hört Meine Stimme.
Pilate therefore said to him, “Are you a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
38 Spricht Pilatus zu Ihm: Was ist Wahrheit? Und da er das gesagt hatte, ging er wiederum hinaus zu den Juden und sagte zu ihnen: Ich finde keine Schuld an Ihm.
Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no basis for a charge against him.
39 Ihr habt aber eine Gewohnheit, daß ich einen auf das Pascha losgebe. Seid ihr nun willens, daß ich euch den König der Juden losgebe?
But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Therefore, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
40 Da schrien sie wiederum alle laut: Nicht Diesen, sondern Barabbas. Barabbas aber war ein Räuber.
Then they all shouted again, saying, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
