1 Mose 31

1 Da erhielt Jakob Kunde von den Äußerungen der Söhne Labans, die da sagten: »Jakob hat das ganze Hab und Gut unsers Vaters an sich gebracht und seinen ganzen jetzigen Reichtum aus dem Besitz unsers Vaters gewonnen.«

And he heareth the words of Laban's sons, saying, 'Jacob hath taken all that our father hath; yea, from that which our father hath, he hath made all this honour;'

2 Zugleich merkte Jakob an Labans Gesichtsausdruck wohl, daß er gegen ihn nicht mehr so gesinnt war wie früher.

and Jacob seeth the face of Laban, and lo, it is not with him as heretofore.

3 Da sagte der HERR zu Jakob: »Kehre in das Land deiner Väter und zu deiner Verwandtschaft zurück; ich will mit dir sein!«

And Jehovah saith unto Jacob, 'Turn back unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred, and I am with thee.'

4 Da sandte Jakob hin, ließ Rahel und Lea auf das Feld zu seiner Herde rufen

And Jacob sendeth and calleth for Rachel and for Leah to the field unto his flock;

5 und sagte zu ihnen: »Ich sehe es dem Gesicht eures Vaters an, daß er gegen mich nicht mehr so gesinnt ist wie früher, obgleich doch der Gott meines Vaters mit mir gewesen ist.

and saith to them, 'I am beholding your father's face — that it is not towards me as heretofore, and the God of my father hath been with me,

6 Ihr selbst wißt ja, daß ich eurem Vater mit meiner ganzen Kraft gedient habe;

and ye — ye have known that with all my power I have served your father,

7 doch euer Vater hat mich betrogen und mir den Lohn schon zehnmal abgeändert, Gott aber hat ihm nicht gestattet, mir Schaden zuzufügen.

and your father hath played upon me, and hath changed my hire ten times; and God hath not suffered him to do evil with me.

8 Sooft er nämlich sagte: ›Die gesprenkelten Tiere sollen dein Lohn sein!‹, warf die ganze Herde gesprenkelte Lämmer, und sooft er sagte: ›Die gestreiften Tiere sollen dein Lohn sein!‹, warf die ganze Herde gestreifte Lämmer.

'If he say thus: The speckled are thy hire, then bare all the flock speckled ones; and if he say thus: The ring-streaked are thy hire, then bare all the flock ring-streaked;

9 So hat Gott eurem Vater den Viehbesitz genommen und ihn mir gegeben.

and God taketh away the substance of your father, and doth give to me.

10 In der Brunstzeit des Kleinviehs nämlich hob ich meine Augen auf und sah im Traume, wie die Böcke, welche das Kleinvieh belegten, gestreift, gesprenkelt und getüpfelt waren.

'And it cometh to pass at the time of the flock conceiving, that I lift up mine eyes and see in a dream, and lo, the he-goats, which are going up on the flock, [are] ring-streaked, speckled, and grisled;

11 Der Engel Gottes aber sagte im Traume zu mir: ›Jakob!‹ Ich antwortete: ›Hier bin ich!‹

and the messenger of God saith unto me in the dream, Jacob, and I say, Here [am] I.

12 Da sagte er: ›Hebe doch deine Augen auf und sieh: alle Böcke, die das Kleinvieh belegen, sind gestreift, gesprenkelt und getüpfelt! Denn ich habe alles gesehen, was Laban dir angetan hat.

'And He saith, Lift up, I pray thee, thine eyes, and see — all the he-goats which are going up on the flock [are] ring-streaked, speckled, and grisled, for I have seen all that Laban is doing to thee;

13 Ich bin der Gott von Bethel, wo du einen Denkstein gesalbt und wo du mir ein Gelübde getan hast. Mache dich jetzt auf, verlaß dieses Land und kehre in dein Heimatland zurück!‹«

I [am] the God of Bethel where thou hast anointed a standing pillar, where thou hast vowed a vow to me; now, arise, go out from this land, and turn back unto the land of thy birth.'

14 Da antworteten ihm Rahel und Lea mit den Worten: »Haben wir etwa noch ein Teil und Erbe im Hause unsers Vaters?

And Rachel answereth — Leah also — and saith to him, 'Have we yet a portion and inheritance in the house of our father?

15 Haben wir ihm nicht als Fremde gegolten? Er hat uns ja verhandelt und den Erlös für uns längst vollständig verbraucht.

have we not been reckoned strangers to him? for he hath sold us, and he also utterly consumeth our money;

16 Ja, der ganze Reichtum, den Gott unserm Vater entzogen hat, gehört uns und unsern Söhnen. Tu also nun alles, was Gott dir geboten hat!«

for all the wealth which God hath taken away from our father, it [is] ours, and our children's; and now, all that God hath said unto thee — do.'

17 Da machte Jakob sich auf, setzte seine Kinder und seine Frauen auf die Kamele

And Jacob riseth, and lifteth up his sons and his wives on the camels,

18 und nahm sein sämtliches Vieh und all sein Hab und Gut mit, das er erworben hatte, das Vieh, das ihm gehörte, das er in Nord-Mesopotamien erworben hatte, um sich zu seinem Vater Isaak nach dem Lande Kanaan zu begeben.

and leadeth all his cattle, and all his substance which he hath acquired, the cattle of his getting, which he hath acquired in Padan-Aram, to go unto Isaac his father, to the land of Canaan.

19 Während aber Laban hingegangen war, um seine Schafe zu scheren, entwandte Rahel das Bild des Hausgottes ihres Vaters;

And Laban hath gone to shear his flock, and Rachel stealeth the teraphim which her father hath;

20 und auch Jakob täuschte den Aramäer Laban, insofern er ihm nichts davon mitteilte, daß er sich heimlich entfernen wollte.

and Jacob deceiveth the heart of Laban the Aramaean, because he hath not declared to him that he is fleeing;

21 Er entfloh also mit allem, was ihm gehörte, und machte sich auf den Weg; er setzte über den Euphratstrom und schlug den Weg nach dem Gebirge Gilead ein.

and he fleeth, he and all that he hath, and riseth, and passeth over the River, and setteth his face [toward] the mount of Gilead.

22 Erst am dritten Tage erfuhr Laban, daß Jakob entflohen war.

And it is told to Laban on the third day that Jacob hath fled,

23 Da nahm er seine Stammesgenossen mit sich, verfolgte ihn sieben Tagereisen weit und holte ihn am Gebirge Gilead ein.

and he taketh his brethren with him, and pursueth after him a journey of seven days, and overtaketh him in the mount of Gilead.

24 Aber Gott erschien dem Aramäer Laban nachts im Traum und sagte zu ihm: »Hüte dich wohl, mit Jakob anders als freundlich zu reden!«

And God cometh in unto Laban the Aramaean in a dream of the night, and saith to him, 'Take heed to thyself lest thou speak with Jacob from good unto evil.'

25 Als nun Laban den Jakob eingeholt hatte – Jakob hatte aber sein Zelt auf dem Berge aufgeschlagen, und auch Laban lagerte sich mit seinen Stammesgenossen im Gebirge Gilead –,

And Laban overtaketh Jacob; and Jacob hath fixed his tent in the mount; and Laban with his brethren have fixed [theirs] in the mount of Gilead.

26 da sagte Laban zu Jakob: »Warum hast du es unternommen, mich zu täuschen, und hast meine Töchter wie Kriegsgefangene entführt?

And Laban saith to Jacob, 'What hast thou done that thou dost deceive my heart, and lead away my daughters as captives of the sword?

27 Warum bist du heimlich entflohen und hast mich hintergangen und mir nichts davon mitgeteilt – ich hätte dir sonst mit Sang und Klang, mit Paukenschall und Saitenspiel das Geleit gegeben –

Why hast thou hidden thyself to flee, and deceivest me, and hast not declared to me, and I send thee away with joy and with songs, with tabret and with harp,

28 und hast mir nicht einmal verstattet, meine Enkel und Töchter (zum Abschied) zu küssen? Ja, du hast töricht gehandelt!

and hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? — now thou hast acted foolishly in doing [so];

29 Es stände nun wohl in meiner Macht, dir übel mitzuspielen; aber der Gott deines Vaters hat gestern nacht zu mir gesagt: ›Hüte dich ja davor, mit Jakob anders als freundlich zu reden!‹

my hand is to God to do evil with you, but the God of your father yesternight hath spoken unto me, saying, Take heed to thyself from speaking with Jacob from good unto evil.

30 Nun gut, du bist von mir weggegangen, weil du so starke Sehnsucht nach dem Hause deines Vaters hattest; aber warum hast du mir meinen (Haus-) Gott gestohlen?«

'And now, thou hast certainly gone, because thou hast been very desirous for the house of thy father; why hast thou stolen my gods?'

31 Da antwortete Jakob dem Laban: »(Ich bin geflohen) weil ich mich fürchtete; denn ich dachte, du würdest mir deine Töchter entreißen.

And Jacob answereth and saith to Laban, 'Because I was afraid, for I said, Lest thou take violently away thy daughters from me;

32 Bei wem du aber dein Götterbild findest, der soll nicht am Leben bleiben! Durchsuche im Beisein unserer Stammesgenossen alles, was ich bei mir habe, und nimm das an dich, was dir gehört!« Jakob wußte nämlich nicht, daß Rahel (das Götterbild) entwandt hatte.

with whomsoever thou findest thy gods — he doth not live; before our brethren discern for thyself what [is] with me, and take to thyself:' and Jacob hath not known that Rachel hath stolen them.

33 Da ging Laban in Jakobs Zelt und in Leas Zelt und in das Zelt der beiden Mägde, fand aber nichts. Aus dem Zelt der Lea ging er dann in das Zelt der Rahel.

And Laban goeth into the tent of Jacob, and into the tent of Leah, and into the tent of the two handmaidens, and hath not found; and he goeth out from the tent of Leah, and goeth into the tent of Rachel.

34 Diese hatte aber das Götterbild genommen und es in den Sattelkorb des Kamels gelegt und sich daraufgesetzt. Laban durchsuchte nun das ganze Zelt, fand aber nichts.

And Rachel hath taken the teraphim, and putteth them in the furniture of the camel, and sitteth upon them; and Laban feeleth all the tent, and hath not found;

35 Sie hatte nämlich zu ihrem Vater gesagt: »O Herr, sei nicht ungehalten darüber, daß ich vor dir nicht aufstehen kann! Ich bin eben unwohl nach der Frauen Weise.« So hatte er denn trotz seines Suchens das Götterbild nicht gefunden.

and she saith unto her father, 'Let it not be displeasing in the eyes of my lord that I am not able to rise at thy presence, for the way of women [is] on me;' and he searcheth, and hath not found the teraphim.

36 Nunmehr geriet Jakob in Zorn und machte Laban laute Vorwürfe mit den Worten: »Was habe ich nun verbrochen, was verschuldet, daß du mich so hitzig verfolgt hast?

And it is displeasing to Jacob, and he striveth with Laban; and Jacob answereth and saith to Laban, 'What [is] my transgression? what my sin, that thou hast burned after me?

37 Du hast nun all meinen Hausrat durchstöbert: was hast du denn von deinem gesamten Hausrat gefunden? Lege es hierher vor meine und deine Stammesgenossen: sie sollen entscheiden, wer von uns beiden im Recht ist!

for thou hast felt all my vessels: what hast thou found of all the vessels of thy house? set here before my brethren, and thy brethren, and they decide between us both.

38 Zwanzig Jahre bin ich jetzt bei dir gewesen: deine Mutterschafe und deine Ziegen haben nie fehlgeworfen, und von den Böcken deines Kleinviehs habe ich keinen gegessen.

'These twenty years I [am] with thee: thy ewes and thy she-goats have not miscarried, and the rams of thy flock I have not eaten;

39 Wenn ein Stück Vieh (von wilden Tieren) zerrissen war, habe ich es nicht zu dir bringen dürfen, nein, ich habe es ersetzen müssen: von mir hast du es gefordert, mochte es bei Tage oder in der Nacht geraubt sein.

the torn I have not brought in unto thee — I, I repay it — from my hand thou dost seek it; I have been deceived by day, and I have been deceived by night;

40 So ging es mir: bei Tage kam ich vor Hitze um und nachts vor Frost, und kein Schlaf kam in meine Augen.

I have been [thus]: in the day consumed me hath drought, and frost by night, and wander doth my sleep from mine eyes.

41 Jetzt sind es zwanzig Jahre, daß ich dir in deinem Hause gedient habe: vierzehn Jahre um deine beiden Töchter und sechs Jahre bei deinem Kleinvieh; und zehnmal hast du mir den Lohn abgeändert.

'This [is] to me twenty years in thy house: I have served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy flock; and thou changest my hire ten times;

42 Wenn nicht der Gott meines Vaters, der Gott Abrahams, den auch Isaak verehrt, auf meiner Seite gestanden hätte, ja, dann hättest du mich jetzt mit leeren Händen ziehen lassen! Aber Gott hat mein Elend und die mühselige Arbeit meiner Hände gesehen und gestern nacht sein Urteil abgegeben!«

unless the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the Fear of Isaac, had been for me, surely now empty thou hadst sent me away; mine affliction and the labour of my hands hath God seen, and reproveth yesternight.'

43 Da gab Laban dem Jakob zur Antwort: »Die Töchter sind meine Töchter, und die Kinder sind meine Kinder, das Vieh ist mein Vieh, und alles, was du hier siehst, gehört mir! Aber was könnte ich heute noch für diese meine Töchter tun oder für ihre Kinder, die sie geboren haben?

And Laban answereth and saith unto Jacob, 'The daughters [are] my daughters, and the sons my sons, and the flock my flock, and all that thou art seeing [is] mine; and to my daughters — what do I to these to-day, or to their sons whom they have born?

44 So komm denn, laß uns beide einen Vertrag miteinander schließen, der soll als Zeuge zwischen mir und dir dienen!«

and now, come, let us make a covenant, I and thou, and it hath been for a witness between me and thee.'

45 Hierauf nahm Jakob einen Stein und richtete ihn als Denkstein auf;

And Jacob taketh a stone, and lifteth it up [for] a standing pillar;

46 dann sagte er zu seinen Stammesgenossen: »Lest Steine zusammen!« Da holten sie Steine und machten einen Haufen davon; dann hielten sie dort auf dem Steinhaufen ein Mahl.

and Jacob saith to his brethren, 'Gather stones,' and they take stones, and make a heap; and they eat there on the heap;

47 Und Laban nannte ihn ›Jegar-Sahadutha‹, Jakob aber nannte ihn ›Galed‹.

and Laban calleth it Jegar-Sahadutha; and Jacob hath called it Galeed.

48 Darauf sagte Laban: »Dieser Steinhaufe ist heute ein Zeuge zwischen mir und dir!« Darum nannte er ihn ›Galed‹;

And Laban saith, 'This heap [is] witness between me and thee to-day;' therefore hath he called its name Galeed;

49 und den Denkstein, den er aufgerichtet hatte, nannte er ›Mizpa‹, indem er sagte: »Der HERR sei Wächter zwischen mir und dir, wenn wir einander aus den Augen gekommen sind!

Mizpah also, for he said, 'Jehovah doth watch between me and thee, for we are hidden one from another;

50 Solltest du je meine Töchter schlecht behandeln oder noch andere Frauen zu meinen Töchtern hinzunehmen, wenn dann auch kein Mensch bei uns sein sollte – bedenke wohl: Gott ist Zeuge zwischen mir und dir!«

if thou afflict my daughters, or take wives beside my daughters — there is no man with us — see, God [is] witness between me and thee.'

51 Weiter sagte Laban zu Jakob: »Siehe, der Steinhaufe hier und der Denkstein hier, den ich zwischen mir und dir aufgerichtet habe:

And Laban saith to Jacob, 'Lo, this heap, and lo, the standing pillar which I have cast between me and thee;

52 dieser Steinhaufe soll ein Zeuge und der Denkstein hier ein Zeugnis sein, daß weder ich über diesen Steinhaufen zu dir hinausgehen darf, noch du über diesen Steinhaufen und diesen Denkstein zu mir in böser Absicht hinausgehen darfst.

this heap [is] witness, and the standing pillar [is] witness, that I do not pass over this heap unto thee, and that thou dost not pass over this heap and this standing pillar unto me — for evil;

53 Der Gott Abrahams und der Gott Nahors sollen Richter zwischen uns sein, der Gott je ihres Stammvaters!« Als dann Jakob bei dem Gott, den sein Vater Isaak verehrte, geschworen hatte,

the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, doth judge between us — the God of their father,' and Jacob sweareth by the Fear of his father Isaac.

54 brachte er ein Schlachtopfer auf dem Berge dar und lud seine Stammesgenossen zur Teilnahme am Mahl ein. So hielten sie denn das Mahl und übernachteten auf dem Berge.

And Jacob sacrificeth a sacrifice in the mount, and calleth to his brethren to eat bread, and they eat bread, and lodge in the mount;

55 Am andern Morgen aber in der Frühe küßte Laban seine Enkel und seine Töchter und nahm Abschied von ihnen; dann brach er auf und kehrte an seinen Wohnort zurück.

and Laban riseth early in the morning, and kisseth his sons and his daughters, and blesseth them; and Laban goeth on, and turneth back to his place.
