Maleachi 1

1 Dies ist die Last, die der HERR redet wider Israel durch Maleachi.

An oracle: the word of YHWH to Israel by Malachi.

2 Ich hab euch lieb, spricht der HERR. So sprechet ihr: Womit hast du uns lieb? Ist nicht Esau Jakobs Bruder? spricht der HERR; noch hab ich Jakob lieb

"I have loved you," says YHWH. Yet you say, "How have you loved us?" "Wasn't Esau Jacob's brother?" says YHWH, "Yet I loved Jacob;

3 und hasse Esau und habe sein Gebirge öde gemacht und sein Erbe den Drachen zur Wüste.

but Esau I hated, and made his mountains a desolation, and gave his heritage to the jackals of the wilderness."

4 Und ob Edom sprechen würde: Wir sind verderbet, aber wir wollen das Wüste wieder erbauen, so spricht der HERR Zebaoth also: Werden sie bauen, so will ich abbrechen; und soll heißen die verdammte Grenze und ein Volk, über das, der HERR zürnet ewiglich.

Whereas Edom says, "We are beaten down, but we will return and build the waste places;" thus says YHWH of hosts, "They shall build, but I will throw down; and men will call them 'The Wicked Land,' even the people against whom YHWH shows wrath forever."

5 Das sollen eure Augen sehen, und werdet sagen: Der HERR ist herrlich in den Grenzen Israels.

Your eyes will see, and you will say, "YHWH is great—even beyond the border of Israel."

6 Ein Sohn soll seinen Vater ehren und ein Knecht seinen HERRN. Bin ich nun Vater, wo ist meine Ehre? Bin ich HERR, wo fürchtet man mich? spricht der HERR Zebaoth zu euch Priestern, die meinen Namen verachten. So sprechet ihr: Womit verachten wir deinen Namen?

"A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If I am a father, then where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is the respect due me? says YHWH of hosts to you, cohanim, who despise my name. You say, 'How have we despised your name?'

7 Damit, daß ihr opfert auf meinem Altar unrein Brot. So sprechet ihr: Womit opfern wir dir Unreines? Damit, daß ihr saget: Des HERRN Tisch ist verachtet.

You offer defiled bread on my altar. You say, 'How have we defiled you?' In that you say, 'YHWH's table is despised, and its fruit, its food, is despised.'

8 Und wenn ihr ein Blindes opfert, so muß es nicht böse heißen; und wenn ihr ein Lahmes oder Krankes opfert, so muß es auch nicht böse heißen. Bringe es deinem Fürsten! Was gilt's, ob du ihm gefallen werdest, oder ob er deine Person ansehen werde? spricht der HERR Zebaoth.

When you offer the blind for sacrifice, isn't that evil? And when you offer the lame and sick, isn't that evil? Present it now to your governor. Will he be pleased with you? Or will he accept your person?" says YHWH of hosts.

9 So bittet nun Gott, daß er uns gnädig sei! Denn solches ist geschehen von euch. Meinet ihr, er werde eure Person ansehen? spricht der HERR Zebaoth.

"Now, please entreat the favor of God, that he may be gracious to us. With this, will he accept any of you?" says YHWH of hosts.

10 Wer ist auch unter euch, der eine Tür zuschließe? Ihr zündet auf meinem Altar kein Feuer an umsonst. Ich habe kein Gefallen an euch, spricht der HERR Zebaoth, und das Speisopfer von euren Händen ist mir nicht angenehm.

"Oh that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on my altar in vain. I have no pleasure in you," says YHWH of hosts, "neither will I accept an offering at your hand.

11 Aber vom Aufgang der Sonne bis zum Niedergang soll mein Name herrlich werden unter den Heiden, und an allen Orten soll meinem Namen geräuchert und ein rein Speisopfer geopfert werden; denn mein Name soll herrlich werden unter den Heiden, spricht der HERR Zebaoth.

For from the rising of the sun even to the going down of the same, my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering: for my name is great among the nations," says YHWH of hosts.

12 Ihr aber entheiliget ihn, damit daß ihr saget: Des HERRN Tisch ist unheilig, und sein Opfer ist verachtet samt seiner Speise.

"But you profane it, in that you say, 'YHWH's table is defiled, and its fruit, its food, is despised.'

13 Und ihr sprechet: Siehe, es ist nur Mühe! und schlaget es in den Wind spricht der HERR Zebaoth. Und ihr opfert, das geraubet, lahm und krank ist, und opfert dann Speisopfer her. Sollte mir solches gefallen von eurer Hand? spricht der HERR.

You say also, 'Look, what a weariness it is.' and you sniff scornfully at it," says YHWH of hosts; "and you have brought that which was taken by violence, the lame, and the sick; thus you bring the offering. Should I accept this from your hand?" says YHWH of hosts.

14 Verflucht sei der Vorteilische, der in seiner Herde ein Männlein hat, und wenn er ein Gelübde tut, opfert er dem HERRN ein untüchtiges! Denn ich bin ein großer König, spricht der HERR Zebaoth, und mein Name ist schrecklich unter den Heiden.

"But the deceiver is cursed, who has in his flock a male, and vows, and sacrifices to YHWH a blemished thing; for I am a great King," says YHWH of hosts, "and my name is awesome among the nations."
