Johannes 6
1 Danach fuhr Jesus weg über das Meer an der Stadt Tiberias in Galiläa.
After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee – otherwise called the Lake of Tiberias.
2 Und es zog ihm viel Volks nach, darum daß sie die Zeichen sahen, die er an den Kranken tat.
A great crowd of people, however, followed him, because they saw the signs of his mission in his work among those who were sick.
3 Jesus aber ging hinauf auf einen Berg und setzte sich daselbst mit seinen Jüngern.
Jesus went up the hill, and sat down there with his disciples.
4 Es war aber nahe Ostern, der Juden Fest.
It was near the time of the Jewish Festival of the Passover.
5 Da hub Jesus seine Augen auf und siehet, daß viel Volks zu ihm kommt, und spricht zu Philippus: Wo kaufen wir Brot, daß diese essen?
Looking up, and noticing that a great crowd was coming towards him, Jesus said to Philip, ‘Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?’
6 (Das sagte er aber, ihn zu versuchen; denn er wußte wohl, was er tun wollte.)
He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he meant to do.
7 Philippus antwortete ihm: Für zweihundert Pfennig Brot ist nicht genug unter sie, daß ein jeglicher unter ihnen ein wenig nehme.
‘Even if we spent a years’ wages on bread,’ answered Philip, ‘it would not be enough for each of them to have a little.’
8 Spricht zu ihm einer seiner Jünger, Andreas, der Bruder des Simon Petrus:
‘There is a boy here,’ said Andrew, another of his disciples, Simon Peter’s brother,
9 Es ist ein Knabe hier, der hat fünf Gerstenbrote und zwei Fische; aber was ist das unter so viele?
‘Who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that for so many?’
10 Jesus aber sprach: Schaffet, daß sich das Volk lagere! Es war aber viel Gras an dem Ort. Da lagerten sich bei fünftausend Mann.
‘Make the people sit down,’ said Jesus. It was a grassy spot; so the people, who numbered about five thousand, sat down,
11 Jesus aber nahm die Brote, dankete und gab sie den Jüngern, die Jünger aber denen, die sich gelagert hatten; desselbigengleichen auch von den Fischen, wieviel er wollte.
and then Jesus took the loaves, and, after saying the thanksgiving, distributed them to those who were sitting down; and the same with the fish, giving the people as much as they wanted.
12 Da sie aber satt waren, sprach er zu seinen Jüngern: Sammelt die übrigen Brocken, daß nichts umkomme!
When they were satisfied, Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Collect the broken pieces that are left, so that nothing may be wasted.’
13 Da sammelten sie und fülleten zwölf Körbe mit Brocken von den fünf Gerstenbroten, die überblieben denen, die gespeiset worden.
The disciples did so, and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves, which were left after all had eaten.
14 Da nun die Menschen das Zeichen sahen, das Jesus tat, sprachen sie: Das ist wahrlich der Prophet, der in die Welt kommen soll!
When the people saw the signs which Jesus gave, they said, ‘This is certainly the prophet who was to come into the world.’
15 Da Jesus nun merkete, daß sie kommen würden und ihn haschen, daß sie ihn zum Könige machten, entwich er abermal auf den Berg, er selbst alleine.
But Jesus, having discovered that they were intending to come and carry him off to make him king, went again up the hill, quite alone.
16 Am Abend aber gingen die Jünger hinab an das Meer
When evening fell, his disciples went down to the sea,
17 und traten in das Schiff und kamen über das Meer gen Kapernaum. Und es war schon finster worden, und Jesus war nicht zu ihnen kommen.
and, getting into a boat, began to cross to Capernaum. By this time darkness had set in, and Jesus had not yet come back to them;
18 Und das Meer erhub sich von einem großen Winde.
the sea, too, was getting rough, for a strong wind was blowing.
19 Da sie nun gerudert hatten bei fünfundzwanzig oder dreißig Feld Wegs, sahen sie Jesum auf dem Meer dahergehen und nahe zum Schiff kommen; und sie fürchteten sich.
When they had rowed three or four miles, they caught sight of him walking on the water and approaching the boat, and they were frightened.
20 Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Ich bin's; fürchtet euch nicht!
But Jesus said to them, ‘It is I; do not be afraid!’
21 Da wollten sie ihn in das Schiff nehmen; und alsbald war das Schiff am Lande, da sie hinfuhren.
And after this they were glad to take him into the boat; and the boat at once arrived off the shore, for which they had been making.
22 Des andern Tages sah das Volk, das diesseits des Meeres stund, daß kein ander Schiff daselbst war denn das einige, darein seine Jünger getreten waren, und daß Jesus nicht mit seinen Jüngern in das Schiff getreten war, sondern allein seine Jünger waren weggefahren.
The people who remained on the other side of the sea had seen that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not gone into it with his disciples, but that they had left without him.
23 Es kamen aber andere Schiffe von Tiberias nahe zu der Stätte, da sie das Brot gegessen hatten durch des HERRN Danksagung.
Some boats, however, had come from Tiberias, from near the spot where they had eaten the bread after the Master had said the thanksgiving.
24 Da nun das Volk sah, daß Jesus nicht da war noch seine Jünger, traten sie auch in die Schiffe und kamen gen Kapernaum und suchten Jesum.
So, on the next day, when the people saw that Jesus was not there, or his disciples either, they themselves got into the boats, and went to Capernaum to look for him.
25 Und da sie ihn fanden jenseit des Meeres, sprachen sie zu ihm: Rabbi, wann bist du herkommen?
And, when they found him on the other side of the sea, they said, ‘When did you get here, Rabbi?’
26 Jesus antwortete ihnen und sprach: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch, ihr suchet mich nicht darum, daß ihr Zeichen gesehen habt, sondern daß ihr von dem Brot gegessen habt und seid satt worden.
‘In truth I tell you,’ answered Jesus, ‘it is not because of the signs which you saw that you are looking for me, but because you had the bread to eat and were satisfied.
27 Wirket Speise, nicht die vergänglich ist, sondern die da bleibet in das ewige Leben, welche euch des Menschen Sohn geben wird; denn denselbigen hat Gott der Vater versiegelt. (aiōnios g166)
Work, not for the food that perishes, but for the food that lasts for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you; for on him the Father – God himself – has set the seal of his approval.’ (aiōnios g166)
28 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Was sollen wir tun, daß wir Gottes Werke wirken?
‘How,’ they asked, ‘are we to do the work that God wants us to do?’
29 Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Das ist Gottes Werk, daß ihr an den glaubet, den er gesandt hat.
‘The work that God wants you to do,’ answered Jesus, ‘is to believe in him whom God sent as his messenger.’
30 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Was tust du für ein Zeichen, auf daß wir sehen und glauben dir? Was wirkest du?
‘What sign, then,’ they asked, ‘are you giving, which we may see, and so believe you? What is the work that you are doing?
31 Unsere Väter haben Manna gegessen in der Wüste, wie geschrieben stehet: Er gab ihnen Brot vom Himmel zu essen.
Our ancestors had the manna to eat in the desert; as scripture says – “He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”’
32 Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Mose hat euch nicht Brot vom Himmel gegeben, sondern mein Vater gibt euch das rechte Brot vom Himmel.
‘In truth I tell you,’ replied Jesus, ‘Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but my Father does give you the true bread from heaven;
33 Denn dies ist das Brot Gottes, das vom Himmel kommt und gibt der Welt das Leben.
for the bread that God gives is that which comes down from heaven, and gives life to the world.’
34 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: HERR, gib uns allewege solch Brot!
‘Master,’ they exclaimed, ‘give us that bread always!’
35 Jesus aber sprach zu ihnen: Ich bin das Brot des Lebens. Wer zu mir kommt, den wird nicht hungern; und wer an mich glaubet, den wird nimmermehr dürsten.
‘I am the life-giving bread,’ Jesus said to them, ‘whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never thirst again.
36 Aber ich hab's euch gesagt, daß ihr mich gesehen habt und glaubet doch nicht.
But, as I have said already, you have seen me, and yet you do not believe in me.
37 Alles, was mir mein Vater gibt, das kommt zu mir; und wer zu mir kommt, den werde ich nicht hinausstoßen.
All those whom the Father gives me will come to me; and no one who comes to me will I ever turn away.
38 Denn ich bin vom Himmel kommen, nicht daß ich meinen Willen tue, sondern des, der mich gesandt hat.
For I have come down from heaven, to do, not my own will, but the will of him who sent me;
39 Das ist aber der Wille des Vaters, der mich gesandt hat, daß ich nichts verliere von allem, was er mir gegeben hat, sondern daß ich's auferwecke am Jüngsten Tage.
and his will is this – that I should not lose one of all those whom he has given me, but should raise them up at the Last day.
40 Das ist aber der Wille des, der mich gesandt hat, daß, wer den Sohn siehet und glaubet an ihn, habe das ewige Leben; und ich werde ihn auferwecken am Jüngsten Tage. (aiōnios g166)
For it is the will of my Father that everyone who sees the Son, and believes in him, should have immortal life; and I myself will raise him up at the Last day.’ (aiōnios g166)
41 Da murreten die Juden darüber, daß er sagte: Ich bin das Brot, das vom Himmel kommen ist,
The people began murmuring against Jesus for saying – “I am the bread which came down from heaven.”
42 und sprachen: Ist dieser nicht Jesus, Josephs Sohn, des Vater und Mutter wir kennen? Wie spricht er denn: Ich bin vom Himmel kommen?
‘Is not this Jesus, Joseph’s son,’ they asked, ‘whose father and mother we know? How is it that he now says that he has come down from heaven?’
43 Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Murret nicht untereinander!
‘Do not murmur among yourselves,’ said Jesus in reply.
44 Es kann niemand zu mir kommen, es sei denn, daß ihn ziehe der Vater, der mich gesandt hat; und ich werde ihn auferwecken am Jüngsten Tage.
‘No one can come to me, unless the Father who sent me draws him to me; and I will raise him up at the Last day.
45 Es stehet geschrieben in den Propheten: Sie werden alle von Gott gelehret sein. Wer es nun höret vom Vater und lernet es, der kommt zu mir.
It is said in the prophets – “And they will all be taught by God.” Everyone who is taught by the Father and learns from him comes to me.
46 Nicht daß jemand den Vater habe gesehen, außer dem, der vom Vater ist, der hat den Vater gesehen.
Not that anyone has seen the Father, except him who is from God – he has seen the Father.
In truth I tell you, the person who believes in me has eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
48 Ich bin das Brot des Lebens.
I am the life-giving bread.
49 Eure Väter haben Manna gegessen in der Wüste und sind gestorben.
Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, and yet died.
50 Dies ist das Brot, das vom Himmel kommt, auf daß, wer davon isset, nicht sterbe.
The bread that comes down from heaven is such that whoever eats of it will never die.
51 Ich bin das lebendige Brot, vom Himmel kommen. Wer von diesem Brot essen wird, der wird leben in Ewigkeit. Und das Brot, das ich geben werde, ist mein Fleisch, welches ich geben werde für das Leben der Welt. (aiōn g165)
I am the living bread that has come down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, they will live for ever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.’ (aiōn g165)
52 Da zanketen die Juden untereinander und sprachen: Wie kann dieser uns sein Fleisch zu essen geben?
They began disputing with one another, ‘How is it possible for this man to give us his flesh to eat?’
53 Jesus sprach zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Werdet ihr nicht essen das Fleisch des Menschensohnes und trinken sein Blut, so habt ihr kein Leben in euch.
‘In truth I tell you,’ answered Jesus, ‘unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink his blood, you have not life within you.
54 Wer mein Fleisch isset und trinket mein Blut, der hat das ewige Leben, und ich werde ihn am Jüngsten Tage auferwecken. (aiōnios g166)
Everyone who takes my flesh for their food, and drinks my blood, has eternal life; and I will raise them up at the Last day. (aiōnios g166)
55 Denn mein Fleisch ist die rechte Speise, und mein Blut ist der rechte Trank.
For my flesh is true food, and my blood true drink.
56 Wer mein Fleisch isset und trinket mein Blut, der bleibt in mir und ich in ihm.
Everyone who takes my flesh for their food, and drinks my blood, remains united to me, and I to them.
57 Wie mich gesandt hat der lebendige Vater, und ich lebe um des Vaters willen, also, wer mich isset, derselbige wird auch leben um meinetwillen.
As the living Father sent me as his messenger, and as I live because the Father lives, so the person who takes me for their food will live because I live.
58 Dies ist das Brot, das vom Himmel kommen ist, nicht wie eure Väter haben Manna gegessen und sind gestorben. Wer dies Brot isset, der wird leben in Ewigkeit. (aiōn g165)
That is the bread which has come down from heaven – not such as your ancestors ate, and yet died; the person who takes this bread for their food will live for ever.’ (aiōn g165)
59 Solches sagte er in der Schule, da er lehrete zu Kapernaum.
All this Jesus said in a synagogue, when he was teaching in Capernaum.
60 Viele nun seiner Jünger, die das höreten, sprachen: Das ist eine harte Rede, wer kann sie hören?
On hearing it, many of his disciples said, ‘This is harsh doctrine! Who can bear to listen to it?’
61 Da Jesus aber bei sich selbst merkete, daß seine Jünger darüber murreten, sprach er zu ihnen: Ärgert euch das?
But Jesus, aware that his disciples were murmuring about it, said to them,
62 Wie, wenn ihr denn sehen werdet des Menschen Sohn auffahren dahin; da er zuvor war?
‘Is this a hindrance to you? What, then, if you should see the Son of Man ascending where he was before?
63 Der Geist ist's, der da lebendig macht; das Fleisch ist kein nütze. Die Worte, die ich rede, die sind Geist und sind Leben.
It is the Spirit that gives life; human strength achieves nothing. In the teaching that I have been giving you there is Spirit and there is life.
64 Aber es sind etliche unter euch, die glauben nicht. Denn Jesus wußte von Anfang wohl, welche nicht glaubend waren, und welcher ihn verraten würde.
Yet there are some of you who do not believe in me.’ For Jesus knew from the first who they were that did not believe in him, and who it was that would betray him;
65 Und er sprach: Darum habe ich euch gesagt: Niemand kann zu mir kommen, es sei ihm denn von meinem Vater gegeben.
and he added, ‘This is why I told you that no one can come to me, unless enabled by the Father.’
66 Von dem an gingen seiner Jünger viel hinter sich und wandelten hinfort nicht mehr mit ihm.
After this many of his disciples drew back, and did not go about with him any longer.
67 Da sprach Jesus zu den Zwölfen: Wollt ihr auch weggehen?
So Jesus said to the Twelve, ‘Do you also wish to leave me?’
68 Da antwortete ihm Simon Petrus: HERR, wohin sollen wir gehen? Du hast Worte des ewigen Lebens; (aiōnios g166)
But Simon Peter answered, ‘Master, to whom would we go? Eternal life is in your teaching; (aiōnios g166)
69 und wir haben geglaubet und erkannt, daß du bist Christus, der Sohn des lebendigen Gottes.
and we have learned to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.’
70 Jesus antwortete ihm: Hab' ich nicht euch Zwölfe erwählet? und euer einer ist ein Teufel.
‘Didn’t I myself choose you to be the Twelve?’ replied Jesus, ‘and yet, even of you, one is playing the devil’s part.’
71 Er redete aber von dem Judas, Simons Sohn, Ischariot; derselbige verriet ihn hernach und war der Zwölfen einer.
He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who was about to betray him, though he was one of the Twelve.
