1 Mein Sohn, vergiß meine Weisung nicht, und dein Herz bewahre meine Gebote!
My son, forget not my law, and let thy heart keep my commandments.
2 Denn langes Leben und glückliche Jahre und Wohlfahrt werden sie dir in Fülle geben;
For they shall add to thee length of days, and years of life and peace.
3 Liebe und Treue werden dich nimmermehr verlassen. Binde sie dir um den Hals, schreibe sie auf die Tafel deines Herzens,
Let not mercy and truth leave thee, put them about thy neck, and write them in the tables of thy heart:
4 so wirst du Anmut und feine Klugheit gewinnen, die Gott und Menschen gefallen.
And thou shalt And grace and good understanding before God and men.
5 Vertraue von ganzem Herzen auf Jahwe, aber auf deine Einsicht verlaß dich nicht.
Have confidence in the Lord with all thy heart, and lean not upon thy own prudence.
6 Auf allen deinen Wegen denke an ihn, so wird er deine Pfade ebnen.
In all thy ways think on him, and he will direct thy steps.
7 Dünke dich nicht weise: fürchte Jahwe und halte dich fern vom Bösen;
I Be not wise in thy own conceit: fear God, and depart from evil:
8 das wird deinem Leibe gesund sein und deine Gebeine erquicken.
For it shall be health to thy navel, and moistening to thy bones.
9 Ehre Jahwe mit Gaben von deinem Gut und von den Erstlingen all' deines Einkommens,
Honour the Lord with thy substance, and give him of the first of all thy fruits:
10 so werden sich deine Speicher mit Überfluß füllen, und deine Kufen von Most überströmen.
And thy barns shall be filled with abundance, and thy presses shall run over with wine.
11 Mein Sohn, verachte nicht die Zucht Jahwes und laß dich seine Strafe nicht verdrießen.
My son, reject not the correction of the Lord: and do not faint when thou art chastised by him:
12 Denn wen Jahwe liebt, den straft er, und zwar wie ein Vater den Sohn, dem er wohlwill.
For whom the Lord loveth, he chastiseth: and as a father in the son he pleaseth himself.
13 Wohl dem Menschen, der Weisheit erlangt, und dem Manne, der Einsicht gewinnt.
Blessed is the man that findeth wisdom and is rich in prudence:
14 Denn ihr Erwerb ist besser als der von Silber, und wertvoller als Gold ihr Gewinn.
The purchasing thereof is better than the merchandise of silver, and her fruit than the chiefest and purest gold:
15 Sie ist kostbarer als Korallen, und all' deine Kleinode kommen ihr nicht gleich.
She is more precious than all riches: and all the things that are desired, are not to be compared with her.
16 Langes Leben ist in ihrer Rechten, in ihrer Linken Reichtum und Ehre.
Length of days is in her right hand, and in her left hand riches and glory.
17 Ihre Wege sind liebliche Wege, und alle ihre Steige sind Wohlfahrt.
Her ways are beautiful ways, and all her paths are peaceable.
18 Sie ist ein Lebensbaum für die, die sie ergreifen, und wer sie festhält, ist beglückt.
She is a tree of life to them that lay hold on her: and he that shall retain her is blessed.
19 Jahwe hat durch Weisheit die Erde gegründet, durch Einsicht den Himmel festgestellt.
The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth, hath established the heavens by prudence.
20 Durch seine Erkenntnis haben sich die Fluten gespalten, und die Wolkenhöhen triefen von Tau.
By his wisdom the depths have broken out, and the clouds grow thick with dew.
21 Mein Sohn, laß sie nicht von deinen Augen weichen, bewahre Verstand und Umsicht,
My son, let not these things depart from thy eyes: keep the law and counsel:
22 so werden sie Leben für dich sein und ein Schmuck voll Anmut für deinen Hals.
And there shall be life to thy soul, and grace to thy mouth.
23 Alsdann wirst du auf deinem Wege sicher wandeln und mit deinem Fuße nicht anstoßen.
Then shalt thou walk confidently in thy way, and thy foot shall not stumble:
24 Legst du dich nieder, so brauchst du nicht zu bangen, und liegst du, so wird dein Schlummer süß sein.
If thou sleep, thou shalt not fear: thou shalt rest, and thy sleep shall be sweet.
25 Du brauchst dich nicht zu fürchten vor plötzlichem Schrecknis, noch vor dem Verderben, wenn es über die Gottlosen hereinbricht.
Be not afraid of sudden fear, nor of the power of the wicked falling upon thee.
26 Denn Jahwe wird deine Zuversicht sein und deinen Fuß behüten, daß er nicht gefangen werde.
For the Lord will be at thy side, and will keep thy foot that thou be not taken.
27 Weigere dich nicht, dem Bedürftigen Gutes zu thun, wenn es in deiner Hände Macht steht, es zu thun.
Do not withhold him from doing good, who is able: if thou art able, do good thyself also.
28 Sprich nicht zu deinem Nächsten: Gehe hin und komme wieder! und: Morgen will ich dir geben! während du es doch hast.
Say not to thy friend: Go, and come again: and tomorrow I will give to thee: when thou canst give at present.
29 Ersinne nicht Böses wider deinen Nächsten, während er arglos bei dir wohnt.
Practise not evil against thy friend, when he hath confidence in thee.
30 Hadere nicht mit jemand ohne Ursache, wenn er dir kein Leid angethan hat.
Strive not against a man without cause, when he hath done thee no evil.
31 Sei nicht neidisch auf den Gewaltthätigen und laß dir keinen seiner Wege wohlgefallen.
Envy not the unjust man, and do not follow his ways:
32 Denn ein Greuel ist für Jahwe, wer Abwege geht; aber mit den Rechtschaffenen hält er vertraute Freundschaft.
For every mocker is an abomination to the Lord, and his communication is with the simple.
33 Der Fluch Jahwes lastet auf dem Hause des Gottlosen; aber der Frommen Wohnstätte segnet er.
Want is from the Lord in the house of the wicked: but the habitations of the just shall be blessed.
34 Hat er's mit Spöttern zu thun, so spottet er, aber den Demütigen giebt er Gnade.
He shall scorn the scorners, and to the meek he will give grace.
35 Ehre werden die Weisen zum Besitz erhalten, aber die Thoren hebt die Schande hoch.
The wise shall possess glory: the promotion of fools is disgrace.
