1 Ein Spötter ist der Wein, ein Lärmer der Rauschtrank, und keiner, der davon taumelt, ist weise.
Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
2 Wie eines Jungleuen Brüllen ist des Königs Schrecken; wer sich seinen Zorn zuzieht, verwirkt sein Leben.
The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoever provokes him to anger sins against his own soul.
3 Es ist dem Mann eine Ehre, vom Streite fern zu bleiben, aber ein jeder Narr ist händelsüchtig.
It is an honor for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.
4 Im Herbste pflügt der Faule nicht; wenn er dann in der Erntezeit nach Ertrag verlangt, so ist nichts da.

The just man walks in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.
8 Ein König, der auf dem Richterstuhle sitzt, scheidet mit seinen Augen sichtend alles Böse aus.
A king that sits in the throne of judgment scatters away all evil with his eyes.
9 Wer kann sagen: Ich habe mein Herz lauter erhalten; ich bin rein von meiner Sünde?
Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
10 Zweierlei Gewicht und zweierlei Maß, die sind beide Jahwe ein Greuel.
Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.
11 Schon der Knabe giebt sich in seinen Handlungen zu erkennen, ob lauter und redlich sein Thun.
Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
12 Das Ohr, welches hört, und das Auge, welches sieht, Jahwe hat sie beide geschaffen.
The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD has made even both of them.
13 Liebe nicht den Schlaf, daß du nicht verarmest; halte deine Augen offen, so wirst du Brot in Fülle haben.
Love not sleep, lest you come to poverty; open your eyes, and you shall be satisfied with bread.
14 “Schlecht, schlecht!” sagt der Käufer; geht er aber seines Wegs, alsdann rühmt er sich.
It is naught, it is naught, says the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasts.
15 Man hat Gold und eine Menge von Korallen; aber ein kostbarer Schmuck sind einsichtsvolle Lippen.
There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
16 Nimm ihm sein Kleid, denn er hat für einen Fremden gebürgt, und um Auswärtiger willen pfände ihn.
Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
17 Süß schmeckt dem Manne das Brot des Trugs; hinterher aber wird ihm der Mund voll Kies.
Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
18 Anschläge gewinnen durch guten Rat Bestand, und nur mit kluger Lenkung führe Krieg.
Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.
19 Wer Geheimnisse verrät, geht als Verleumder umher; drum gieb dich nicht ab mit einem Plaudermaul.
He that goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flatters with his lips.
20 Wer seinem Vater und seiner Mutter flucht, des Leuchte erlischt in schwarzer Finsternis.
Whoever curses his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
21 Ein Erbe, das zuerst erhastet ward, wird schließlich ohne Segen sein.
An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.
22 Sprich nicht: Ich will Böses vergelten! Harre auf Jahwe, so wird er dir helfen.
Say not you, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save you.
23 Zweierlei Gewicht ist Jahwe ein Greuel, und falsche Wage ist ein übel Ding.
Divers weights are an abomination to the LORD; and a false balance is not good.
24 Von Jahwe sind bestimmt des Mannes Schritte; der Mensch aber, - wie mag er seinen Weg verstehn?
Man’s goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?
25 Ein Fallstrick ist's für den Menschen, unbedacht “geweiht”! zu rufen und erst nach dem Geloben zu überlegen.
It is a snare to the man who devours that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.
26 Ein weiser König scheidet sichtend die Gottlosen aus und läßt dann das Rad über sie hingehn.
A wise king scatters the wicked, and brings the wheel over them.
27 Eine Leuchte Jahwes ist des Menschen Geist, die durchforscht alle Kammern des Leibes.
The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
28 Liebe und Treue behüten den König, und durch Liebe stützt er seinen Thron.
Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upheld by mercy.
29 Der Jünglinge Ruhm ist ihre Stärke, und der Greise Schmuck ist das graue Haar.
The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head.
30 Blutige Striemen säubern den Bösewicht, und Schläge, die in des Leibes Kammern dringen.
The blueness of a wound cleans away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.
