Galater 2

1 Nachher, vierzehn Jahre später, gieng ich wiederum hinauf nach Jerusalem mit Barnabas, wobei ich auch Titus mitnahm.

Then after a lapse of fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus also with [me];

2 Ich gieng aber hin auf eine Offenbarung, und legte ihnen das Evangelium vor, welches ich unter den Heiden verkünde, im besonderen den Häuptern, ob ich etwa vergeblich laufe oder gelaufen sei.

and I went up according to revelation, and I laid before them the glad tidings which I preach among the nations, but privately to those conspicuous [among them], lest in any way I run or had run in vain;

3 Aber nicht einmal mein Begleiter Titus, der Grieche war, wurde zur Beschneidung genötigt.

(but neither was Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, compelled to be circumcised; )

4 Wegen der eingeschlichenen falschen Brüder aber, die sich eingedrängt hatten, um unserer Freiheit aufzulauern, die wir in Christus Jesus haben, in der Absicht uns zu knechten:

and [it was] on account of the false brethren brought in surreptitiously, who came in surreptitiously to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage;

5 vor ihnen sind wir auch nicht einen Augenblick gewichen, daß wir uns unterworfen hätten, auf daß es mit der Wahrheit des Evangeliums sein Verbleiben habe für euch.

to whom we yielded in subjection not even for an hour, that the truth of the glad tidings might remain with you.

6 Von denen aber, die ein Ansehen hatten - was sie auch einst waren, mir ist es gleich, Gott geht nicht auf die Person - mir haben ja diese Angesehenen nichts zu gethan.

But from those who were conspicuous as being somewhat — whatsoever they were, it makes no difference to me: God does not accept man's person; for to me those who were conspicuous communicated nothing;

7 Sondern im Gegenteil, da sie sahen, daß ich betraut sei mit dem Evangelium für die Unbeschnittenen, wie Petrus mit dem für die Beschnittenen -

but, on the contrary, seeing that the glad tidings of the uncircumcision were confided to me, even as to Peter that of the circumcision,

8 denn der bei Petrus wirksam war für das Apostolat bei den Beschnittenen, war auch bei mir wirksam für die Heiden -

(for he that wrought in Peter for [the] apostleship of the circumcision wrought also in me towards the Gentiles, )

9 und da sie die Gnade erkannt, die mir verliehen worden, Jakobus, Kephas und Johannes, die da für Säulen galten, gaben sie mir und Barnabas die Hand der Gemeinschaft darauf: wir für die Heiden, sie für die Beschnittenen.

and recognising the grace given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were conspicuous as being pillars, gave to me and Barnabas [the] right hands of fellowship, that we [should go] to the nations, and they to the circumcision;

10 Nur sollten wir der Armen gedenken, was ich mich auch bemüht habe so zu halten.

only that we should remember the poor, which same thing also I was diligent to do.

11 Wie dann aber Kephas nach Antiochia kam, da trat ich ihm ins Gesicht entgegen, weil Klage wider ihn war.

But when Peter came to Antioch, I withstood him to [the] face, because he was to be condemned:

12 Denn bevor einige von Jakobus her kamen, aß er mit den Heiden zusammen. Wie aber diese kamen, zog er sich zurück und sonderte sich ab, in der Furcht vor denen aus der Beschneidung.

for before that certain came from James, he ate with [those of] the nations; but when they came, he drew back and separated himself, fearing those of [the] circumcision;

13 Und mit ihm heuchelten auch die übrigen Juden, so daß selbst Barnabas durch ihre Heuchelei mit fortgerissen wurde.

and the rest of the Jews also played the same dissembling part with him; so that even Barnabas was carried away too by their dissimulation.

14 Da ich aber sah, daß sie nicht richtig wandeln nach der Wahrheit des Evangeliums, sagte ich zu Kephas öffentlich vor allen: wenn du, der du ein Jude bist, heidnisch lebst und nicht jüdisch, wie kannst du die Heiden nötigen sich jüdisch zu halten?

But when I saw that they do not walk straightforwardly, according to the truth of the glad tidings, I said to Peter before all, If thou, being a Jew, livest as the nations and not as the Jews, how dost thou compel the nations to Judaize?

15 Wir sind von Natur Juden und nicht als Heiden geborene Sünder.

We, Jews by nature, and not sinners of [the] nations,

16 Weil wir aber erkannten, daß der Mensch nicht gerechtfertigt wird aus Gesetzeswerken, sondern nur durch den Glauben an Christus Jesus, so haben auch wir den Glauben an Christus Jesus angenommen, damit wir gerechtfertigt würden aus dem Glauben an Christus und nicht aus Gesetzeswerken, weil aus Gesetzeswerken nicht gerechtfertigt werden wird, was Fleisch heißt.

but knowing that a man is not justified on the principle of works of law [nor] but by the faith of Jesus Christ, we also have believed on Christ Jesus, that we might be justified on the principle of [the] faith of Christ; and not of works of law; because on the principle of works of law no flesh shall be justified.

17 Wenn wir nun aber, dabei daß wir in Christus gerechtfertigt zu werden suchten, unsererseits auch als Sünder befunden wurden, so ist wohl Christus der Sünde Helfer? Nimmermehr.

Now if in seeking to be justified in Christ we also have been found sinners, then [is] Christ minister of sin? Far be the thought.

18 Ja, wenn ich wieder aufbaue, was ich aufgelöst, dann mache ich mich zum Uebertreter.

For if the things I have thrown down, these I build again, I constitute myself a transgressor.

19 Ich bin ja dem Gesetze gestorben durch das Gesetz, um Gott zu leben; ich bin mit Christus gekreuzigt,

For I, through law, have died to law, that I may live to God.

20 ich lebe jetzt nicht als ich selbst, es lebt in mir Christus; sofern ich aber noch im Fleische lebe, lebe ich im Glauben an den Sohn Gottes, der mich geliebt hat, und sich selbst für mich hingegeben hat.

I am crucified with Christ, and no longer live, I, but Christ lives in me; but [in] that I now live in flesh, I live by faith, the [faith] of the Son of God, who has loved me and given himself for me.

21 Ich stoße die Gnade Gottes nicht um; wenn es eine Gerechtigkeit gäbe durch das Gesetz, dann wäre Christus umsonst gestorben.

I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness [is] by law, then Christ has died for nothing.
