Psalm 78
1 Ein Lehrgedicht, von Asaph. - Mein Volk! Hab acht auf meine Lehre! Zu meines Mundes Reden neiget euer Ohr!
Maschil of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, [to] my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 Ich öffne meinen Mund zu einem Spruch. Ich künd Gesänge aus der Vorzeit Tagen,
I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:
3 die wir vernommen und jetzt wissen, die unsre Väter uns erzählt.
Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
4 Wir, ihre Kinder, wollen über sie nicht schweigen. Wir wollen künftigem Geschlecht des Herren Ruhmestaten künden und seine Macht und Wunder, die er tat.
We will not hide [them] from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.
5 Zum Brauch hat er's in Jakob eingesetzt, zur heiligen Pflicht in Israel gemacht. Denn unsern Vätern hat er anbefohlen, sie ihren Kindern kundzutun,
For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:
6 auf daß ein späteres Geschlecht sie kenne, die Enkel, die geboren würden, sie ihren Kindern wiederum verkünden.
That the generation to come might know [them, even] the children [which] should be born; [who] should arise and declare [them] to their children:
7 Sie sollten Gott vertrauen und nicht vergessen Gottes Taten und seine Vorschriften befolgen
That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:
8 und nicht, wie ihre Väter, werden ein widerspenstig, trotziges Geschlecht, solch ein Geschlecht von wankendem Gemüt und ungetreuem Herzen gegen Gott.
And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation [that] set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.
9 Ganz unvernünftige Söhne, voller Trug, das Leben werfen sie hinweg und wenden sich am Trübsalstage ab;
The children of Ephraim, [being] armed, [and] carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.
10 sie halten Gottes Bündnis nicht und wollen nicht nach seiner Lehre wandeln.
They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;
11 Und sie vergessen seine Werke gänzlich und seine Wunder, die er ihnen zeigt.
And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.
12 Vor ihren Vätern tat er Unvergleichliches, im Land Ägypten, im Gefild von Tanis.
Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, [in] the field of Zoan.
13 Er spaltete das Meer und führte sie hindurch und ließ das Wasser dammgleich stehen.
He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.
14 Er leitete bei Tag sie mit der Wolke, die ganze Nacht mit Feuerschein,
In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.
15 und ließ die Felsen in der Wüste sprudeln und tränkte sie in Fülle wie mit Fluten.
He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave [them] drink as [out of] the great depths.
16 Aus Steinen ließ er Bäche quellen, wie Ströme Wasser sprudeln.
He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.
17 Allein sie sündigten noch weiter gegen ihn und widersetzten sich dem Höchsten in der Wüste.
And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.
18 Und sie versuchten Gott in ihrem Herzen, für ihre Gelüste Speise heischend.
And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.
19 Sie sprachen gegen Gott und fragten: "Vermag es Gott, selbst in der Wüste einen Tisch zu decken?
Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?
20 Den Felsen schlug er zwar; das Wasser floß, die Bäche strömten. Vermag er aber Brot zu geben und seinem Volke Fleisch zu spenden?"
Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?
21 Der Herr vernahm's und wurde zornig; ein Feuer loderte in Jakob auf; ein Zorn erhob sich gegen Israel,
Therefore the LORD heard [this], and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;
22 weil sie an Gott nicht glaubten und nicht auf seine Hilfe bauten.
Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:
23 Doch er gebot den Wolken oben und tat des Himmels Pforten auf,
Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,
24 hernieder ließ er Manna auf sie regnen, um sie zu speisen, schenkte ihnen Himmelsbrot.
And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.
25 Das Brot der Engel konnte jeder essen; er sandte ihnen Kost in Fülle.
Man did eat angels’ food: he sent them meat to the full.
26 Er ließ den Morgenwind am Himmel wehen; den Südwind führte er durch seine Macht herbei.
He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.
27 Dann ließ er Fleisch wie Staub auf sie herniederregnen, wie Meeressand Geflügel.
He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:
28 Er ließ es in ihr Lager fallen, um seine Wohnstatt ringsumher.
And he let [it] fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.
29 Sie aßen, wurden übersatt; was sie gewünscht, verlieh er ihnen.
So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;
30 Noch war nicht ihre Lust gestillt, noch war die Kost in ihrem Munde,
They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat [was] yet in their mouths,
31 als Gottes Zorn sich gegen sie erhob, die Feisten unter ihnen würgte, die junge Mannschaft Israels zu Boden streckte.
The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen [men] of Israel.
32 Bei all dem sündigten sie weiter und glaubten nicht an seine Wunderkräfte.
For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.
33 Da ließ er ihre Tage zwecklos schwinden und ihre Jahre in Enttäuschung.
Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.
34 Zwar fragten sie nach ihm, wenn er sie würgte, verlangten wiederum nach Gott,
When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.
35 wohl eingedenk, daß Gott ihr Hort, der höchste Gott ihr Retter sei.
And they remembered that God [was] their rock, and the high God their redeemer.
36 Allein sie täuschten ihn mit ihrem Munde, belogen ihn mit ihrer Zunge.
Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.
37 Ihr Herz war unaufrichtig gegen ihn; mit seinem Bunde meinten sie's nicht ehrlich.
For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.
38 Doch er, erbarmungsvoll, vergab die Schuld, vertilgte nicht; oft hielt er seinen Zorn zurück und ließ nicht seinen Grimm austoben,
But he, [being] full of compassion, forgave [their] iniquity, and destroyed [them] not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.
39 wohl eingedenk, daß sie nur Fleisch, ein Windhauch, der verschwindet ohne Wiederkehr.
For he remembered that they [were but] flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.
40 Wie oft erzürnten sie ihn in der Wüste und reizten ihn im Steppenland,
How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, [and] grieve him in the desert!
41 versuchten immer wieder Gott, erbitterten die Heiligen Israels,
Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.
42 gedachten nimmer seiner Macht, des Tages, da er vor dem Feinde sie gerettet,
They remembered not his hand, [nor] the day when he delivered them from the enemy.
43 wie er vor den Ägyptern seine Zeichen tat, an dem Gefild von Tanis seine Wunder:
How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan:
44 In Blut verwandelte er ihre Ströme; untrinkbar ward ihr fließend Wasser.
And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.
45 Er sandte Ungeziefer unter sie, das sie verzehrte, und Frösche ihnen zum Verderben.
He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.
46 Der Raupe gab er ihre Früchte preis und ihre Arbeit der Heuschrecke.
He gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust.
47 Er schlug mit Hagel ihren Weinstock und ihren Maulbeerbaum durch Reif.
He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycomore trees with frost.
48 Er gab ihr Vieh dem Hagel preis, den Blitzen ihre Herden.
He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.
49 Er ließ die Hitze seines Zornes auf sie los, nur Grimm und Wut und Angst, von Unglücksboten eine Schar.
He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels [among them].
50 So ließ er seinem Zorne freien Lauf, verschonte ihre Seele mit dem Tode nicht. Er gab der Pest ihr Leben preis,
He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;
51 und in Ägypten schlug er alle Erstgeburt, die Jugendblüte in den Zelten Chams.
And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of [their] strength in the tabernacles of Ham:
52 Er führte, Schäflein gleich, sein Volk heraus und lenkte sie wie in der Steppe eine Herde.
But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
53 Er leitete sie sicher, daß sie nichts zu fürchten hatten; das Meer bedeckte ihre Feinde.
And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
54 Er brachte sie zu seinem heiligen Gebiete, zu jenem Berg, den seine Rechte sich erworben,
And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, [even to] this mountain, [which] his right hand had purchased.
55 vertrieb vor ihnen weg die Heiden, verloste sie als erblichen Besitz und ließ die Stämme Israels in ihren Zelten wohnen.
He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.
56 Und doch versuchten sie und reizten Gott, den Höchsten, und hielten nimmer seine Satzungen.
Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:
57 Wie ihre Väter wichen sie und fielen ab; sie wurden wie ein schlaffer Bogen.
But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.
58 Sie reizten ihn zum Zorn durch ihre Höhen, zur Eifersucht durch ihre Götzenbilder.
For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.
59 Gott hörte dies und wurde zornig, und Israel verwarf er völlig,
When God heard [this], he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:
60 verließ zu Silo seinen Sitz, das Zelt, in dein er unter Menschen wohnte;
So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent [which] he placed among men;
61 gab seine Ehre in Gefangenschaft und seine Zier in Feindeshand
And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy’s hand.
62 und gab sein Volk dem Schwerte preis, entrüstet über dies sein Eigentum.
He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.
63 Die jungen Männer fraß das Feuer, und seine Jungfraun durften keine Totenklage halten.
The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.
64 Hinfielen seine Priester durch das Schwert, und seine Witwen weinten nicht dazu.
Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.
65 Doch wie vom Schlaf erwachte da der Herr, gleichwie ein Held vom Weine jauchzend.
Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, [and] like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.
66 Im Rücken schlug er seine Feinde, belegte sie mit ewigem Schimpf.
And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.
67 Doch er verschmähte Josephs Zelt; den Stamm von Ephraim erkor er nicht.
Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:
68 Vielmehr erkor er Judas Stamm, den Sionsberg, der ihm so lieb.
But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.
69 Er baute Himmelshöhen gleich sein Heiligtum und gleich der Erde, die er ewig gründete.
And he built his sanctuary like high [palaces], like the earth which he hath established for ever.
70 Und er erkor sich David, seinen Knecht, entriß ihn seiner Herde Hürden.
He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:
71 Vom Milchvieh nahm er ihn hinweg, sein Volk zu weiden in Jakob, in Israel die ewig Seinen.
From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.
72 Mit frommem Sinne weidete er sie und führte sie mit kluger Hand.
So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.
