Psalm 147

1 Lobpreist den Herrn! Weil er so gut, ist unser Gott des Lobes wert; weil er so liebevoll, des Ruhmes würdig.

Praise the Lord, for it's good to sing praises to our God! Praise is wonderful and beautiful!

2 Der Herr erbaut Jerusalem; er sammelt die Zerstreuten Israels.

The Lord is rebuilding Jerusalem, gathering together the people of Israel who have been scattered.

3 Er heilet die gebrochenen Herzen und lindert ihre Schmerzen

He heals the broken-hearted, and bandages the wounded.

4 Der Sterne Zahl hat er bestimmt und ruft sie all mit Namen auf.

He knows how many stars he made, and commands all of them by name.

5 Ja, unser Herr ist groß, gewaltig, und seine Weisheit unbeschreiblich.

Our Lord is great! His power is immense! There's no limit to what he understands!

6 Der Herr hebt die Gebeugten auf; die Frevler aber beugt er in den Staub. -

The Lord helps those who are bowed down to get up; but he grinds the wicked into the ground.

7 So dankt dem Herrn in Wechselchören! So singet auf der Zither unserm Gott,

Sing thanks to the Lord! Sing praises to our God with a harp!

8 ihm, der den Himmel deckt mit Wolken und so der Erde Regen schafft, der Gras auf Bergen sprossen läßt,

He covers the sky with clouds to bring rain to the earth, and makes the grass grow on the hills.

9 und der dem Wilde Futter gibt, den jungen Raben das, wonach sie rufen!

He gives food to the animals, and to the baby ravens when they call.

10 Er hat nicht Lust an Rosses Stärke; nicht achtet er des Mannes Kraft.

The Lord doesn't appreciate the strength of war-horses or value human power.

11 Dem Herrn gefallen, die vor ihm sich fürchten, und wer auf seine Gnade harrt. -

What the Lord values are those who follow him, those who put their confidence in his trustworthy love.

12 Lobpreis den Herrn, Jerusalem! Lobsinge, Sion, deinem Gott!

Jerusalem, praise the Lord! Zion, praise your God!

13 Er festigt deiner Tore Riegel und segnet darin deine Söhne,

He makes the bars on your city gates strong, and blesses your children around you.

14 und wieder gibt er deinen Grenzen Frieden und sättigt dich mit feinstem Weizen.

He keeps the borders of your land safe from attack; he provides you with plenty of the finest wheat.

15 Zur Erde sendet er sein Wort, und schnell läuft sein Befehl.

He sends his commands around the world—they're quickly implemented.

16 Wie Wolle gibt er Schnee und streut den Reif wie Asche.

He sends snow as white as wool, and scatters frost like ashes.

17 Er wirft sein Eis wie Brocken hin; vor seiner Kälte bleibt das Wasser stehen.

He throws hail like stones. Who can stand the cold he sends?

18 Dann sendet er sein Wort; er macht sie schmelzen. Er gibt mir leis Befehl, und sie zergehn in Wasser.

Then he sends out his command and it melts; he blows on it and the water flows.

19 Er, der sein Wort läßt Jakob hören, Gesetz und Rechte Israel.

He proclaims his word to Jacob; his rules and laws to Israel.

20 So hat er keinem Heidenvolk getan, seine Gebote lehrte er sie nicht. Alleluja!

He has not done this for any other nation—they don't know his laws. Praise the Lord!
