1 Den Wasserbächen gleich ist in der Hand des Herrn des Königs Herz; Er lenkt's, wohin er will.
The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD as the watercourses: He turneth it whithersoever He will.
2 Dem Mann scheint jeder seiner Wege recht zu sein; jedoch der Herr ist's, der die Herzen wägt.
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the hearts.
3 Gerechtigkeit und Recht ausüben liebt der Herr viel mehr denn Schlachtopfer.
To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.
4 Ein großer Ehrgeiz und Verstand entflammen Frevler zum Vergehen.
A haughty look, and a proud heart — the tillage of the wicked is sin.
5 Allein des Arbeitsamen Pläne führen zum Gewinn; der Hastige bringt's nur zum Verlust.
The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but every one that is hasty hasteth only to want.
6 Wer sich durch Lügenzunge Schätze sammelt, strebt nach verwehtem Hauch, ja, nach dem Tod.
The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vapour driven to and fro; they that seek them seek death.
7 Für Frevler hat das Unrecht einen Reiz; sie weigern sich zu tun, was recht.
The violence of the wicked shall drag them away; because they refuse to do justly.
8 Mag eines Mannes Tun verwickelt sein und schief verlaufen, doch ist er redlich, handelt er doch recht.
The way of man is froward and strange; but as for the pure, his work is right.
9 Viel lieber in dem Winkel eines Daches ruhen, als ein gemeinsam Haus mit einem Weib, das zänkisch!
It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than in a house in common with a contentious woman.
10 Des Frevlers Seele hat am Bösen ihre Lust, und nicht verhaßt ist ihm die böse Tat.
The soul of the wicked desireth evil; his neighbour findeth no favour in his eyes.
11 Wenn man den Spötter büßen läßt, dann kann der Dumme dadurch weise werden. Behandelt man den Weisen rücksichtsvoll, kann jener dadurch auch zur Einsicht kommen.
When the scorner is punished, the thoughtless is made wise; and when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge.
12 Wenn auf des Frevlers Haus der Fromme Rücksicht nimmt, verleitet er den Frevler wiederum zum Bösen.
The Righteous One considereth the house of the wicked; overthrowing the wicked to their ruin.
13 Wer vor des Armen Hilferuf sein Ohr verstopft, der findet kein Gehör dann, wenn er selber ruft.
Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be answered.
14 Im stillen eine Gabe kann den Zorn besänftigen, ein heimliches Geschenk den größten Grimm.
A gift in secret pacifieth anger, and a present in the bosom strong wrath.
15 Dem Frommen ist es eine Freude, wenn ihm nach Recht geschieht; den Bösewichtern ist's ein Schrecken.
To do justly is joy to the righteous, but ruin to the workers of iniquity.
16 Ein Mensch, der von der Klugheit Wege irrt, wird Ruhe erst im Schattenreiche finden.
The man that strayeth out of the way of understanding shall rest in the congregation of the shades.
17 Wer Lustbarkeiten liebt, der fühlt sich stets im Mangel; wer Wein und Öl zu gerne hat, wird nimmer reich.
He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man; he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.
18 Das Sühnegeld des Frommen ist der Frevler; an Stelle der Rechtschaffenen tritt der Verbrecher.
The wicked is a ransom for the righteous; and the faithless cometh in the stead of the upright.
19 Viel besser, einsam in der Wüste leben, als in Gesellschaft eines zank- und händelsüchtigen Weibes!
It is better to dwell in a desert land, than with a contentious and fretful woman.
20 An Öl und köstlichem Getränk ist in des Weisen Haus ein Vorrat; ein Tor läßt sie verderben.
There is desirable treasure and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man swalloweth it up.
21 Wer nach Gerechtigkeit und Güte strebt, der findet Leben, Rechtlichkeit und Ehre.
He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, prosperity, and honour.
22 Der Helden Stadt erstieg ein Weiser; das Bollwerk stürzte ein, dem sie sich anvertraut.
A wise man scaleth the city of the mighty, and bringeth down the stronghold wherein it trusteth.
23 Wer seinen Mund und seine Zunge hütet, der schützt sein Leben vor Gefahren.
Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.
24 Ein Spötter heißt, wer übermütig und vermessen ist und wer im Übermaß des Stolzes handelt.
A proud and haughty man, scorner is his name, even he that dealeth in overbearing pride.
25 Den Faulen tötet sein Gelüste; denn seine Hände weigern sich zu schaffen.
The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.
26 Den ganzen Tag begehrt nur, wer begehrlich; der Fromme spendet ohne Unterlaß.
There is that coveteth greedily all the day long; but the righteous giveth and spareth not.
27 Des Frevlers Opfer ist ein Greuel und vollends, bringt er es in schnöder Absicht dar.
The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination; how much more, when he bringeth it with the proceeds of wickedness?
28 Ein falscher Zeuge geht zugrunde; dagegen redet sieghaft ein glaubwürdiger Mann.
A false witness shall perish; but the man that obeyeth shall speak unchallenged.
29 Der Frevler macht ein frech Gesicht; der Biedere verbessert seinen Wandel.
A wicked man hardeneth his face; but as for the upright, he looketh well to his way.
30 Nicht Weisheit gibt's, nicht Einsicht, Rat nicht vor dem Herrn.
There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.
31 Das Roß ist abgerichtet für den Tag der Schlacht; jedoch der Sieg kommt von dem Herrn.
The horse is prepared against the day of battle; but victory is of the LORD.
