1 Dem Menschen mag das Denken eignen; vom Herrn kommt die Beredsamkeit der Zunge.
It is the part of man to prepare the soul: and of the Lord to govern the tongue.
2 Erklärt für lauter alle seine Wege auch der Mensch, der Herr ist's, der die Geister wägt.
All the ways of a man are open to his eyes: the Lord is the weigher of spirits.
3 Dem Herrn enthülle deine Werke! Rechtschaffen sind dann deine Pläne auch.
Lay open thy works to the Lord: and thy thoughts shall be directed.
4 Für einen, den er strafen will, erschafft der Herr Beliebiges, selbst einen Frevler für den Tag der Strafe.
The Lord hath made all things for himself: the wicked also for the evil day.
5 Ein Greuel für den Herrn ist jeder Übermütige. Untrüglich ist's: er bleib nicht ungestraft.
Every proud man is an abomination to the Lord: though hand should be joined to hand, he is not innocent. The beginning of a good way is to do justice; and this is more acceptable with God, than to offer sacrifices.
6 Durch treue Liebe wird die Sündenstrafe abgewandt; und in der Furcht des Herrn vermeidet man das Böse.
By mercy and truth iniquity is redeemed: and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil.
7 Findet der Herr Gefallen an den Wegen eines Mannes, dann müssen seine Feinde selbst mit ihm in Frieden leben.
When the ways of man shall please the Lord, he will convert even his enemies to peace.
8 Viel besser wenig in Gerechtigkeit als großes Einkommen mit Unrecht.
Better is a little with justice, than great revenues with iniquity.
9 Des Menschen Herz erdenkt sich seinen Weg; doch seine Schritte lenkt der Herr.
The heart of man disposeth his way: but the Lord must direct his steps.
10 Des Königs Ausspruch ist Orakelspruch, und so vergreift sich nicht sein Mund beim Urteilsprechen.
Divination is in the lips of the king, his mouth shall not err in judgment.
11 Die Waage, wie das rechte Wägen, kommt vom Herrn; sein Werk sind die Gewichte all.
Weight and balance are judgments of the Lord: and his work all the weights of the bag.
12 Ein frevelhaftes Handeln sollte Königen ein Greuel sein; denn durch Gerechtigkeit nur wird der Thron befestigt.
They that act wickedly are abominable to the king: for the throne is established by justice.
13 Wahrhaftige Lippen sollten einem König wohl gefallen; er sollte lieben, die die Wahrheit reden!
Just lips are the delight of kings: he that speaketh right things shall be loved.
14 Des Königs Grimm: ein Todesbote! Ein weiser Mann versteht's, ihn zu besänftigen.
The wrath of a king is as messengers of death: and the wise man will pacify it.
15 Des Königs freundlich froher Blick schafft Leben; der Frühlingsregenwolke gleicht sein Wohlgefallen.
In the cheerfulness of the king’s countenance is life: and his clemency is like the latter rain.
16 Viel besser Weisheit zu erwerben als feines Gold! Erwerb von Einsicht ist dem Silber vorzuziehen.
Get wisdom, because it is better than gold: and purchase prudence, for it is more precious than silver.
17 Der Frommen Bahn besteht im Böses-Meiden; sein Leben wahrt, wer acht auf seinen Wandel hat.
The path of the just departeth from evils: he that keepeth his soul keepeth his way.
18 Hochmut kommt vor dem Fall und Stolz vor Untergang.
Pride goeth before destruction: and the spirit is lifted up before a fall.
19 Viel besser ist's, betrübt zu sein mit Duldern, als Beute mit den Übermütigen zu teilen.
It is better to be humbled with the meek, than to divide spoils with the proud.
20 Wer acht gibt auf das Wort, der findet Glück, und wer dem Herrn vertraut: Heil ihm!
The learned in word shall find good things: and he that trusteth in the Lord is blessed.
21 Ein Denker zieht nur den Gelehrten an; doch wohlberedte Lippen machen groß den Hörerkreis.
The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and he that is sweet in words shall attain to greater things.
22 Ein Lebensborn ist Unterweisung derer, die dafür empfänglich; doch Torheit ist's, die Toren zu belehren.
Knowledge is a fountain of life to him that possesseth it: the instruction of fools is foolishness.
23 Des Weisen Herz macht seinen Mund gar klug und mehrt auf seinen Lippen die Belehrung.
The heart of the wise shall instruct his mouth: and shall add grace to his lips.
24 Huldvolle Reden sind wie Honigseim; sie sind der Seele eine Süßigkeit und Labsal für den Leib.
Well ordered words are as a honeycomb: sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.
25 So mancher Weg dünkt einem Mann gerade; doch schließlich sind es Todeswege.
There is a way that seemeth to a man right: and the ends thereof lead to death.
26 Des Arbeiters Verlangen schafft für ihn; sein Mund drängt ihn dazu.
The soul of him that laboureth, laboureth for himself, because his mouth hath obliged him to it.
27 Der Teufelsmann vergräbt die Absicht; auf seinen Lippen aber lodert Feuersglut.
The wicked man diggeth evil, and in his lips is a burning fire.
28 Ein ränkesüchtiger Mann macht Streitigkeiten; ein Ohrenbläser bringt vertraute Freunde auseinander.
A perverse man stirreth up quarrels: and one full of words separateth princes.
29 Gewalttat übt schon, wer den Nächsten nur verführt und ihn auf keinen guten Weg geleitet.
An unjust man allureth his friend: and leadeth him into a way that is not good.
30 Wer seine Augen zukneift, tut's um Lügen zu ersinnen; wer seine Lippen aufeinander preßt, ist fertig mit dem bösen Plan.
He that with fixed eyes deviseth wicked things, biting his lips, bringeth: evil to pass.
31 Ein herrlich Diadem ist graues Haar; nur auf dem Weg der Tugend wird's gefunden.
Old age is a crown of dignity, when it is found in the ways of justice.
32 Weit tapfrer sind die Langmutsvollen als des Krieges Helden, und tapfrer die des eigenen Gemütes Herr als die Eroberer von Städten.
The patient man is better than the valiant: and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh cities.
33 In des Gewandes Falten wirft man zwar das Los; doch von dem Herrn kommt sein Entscheid.
Lots are cast into the lap, but they are disposed of by the Lord.
