Matthaeus 11
1 Als Jesus mit seinen Anordnungen an seine zwölf Jünger zu Ende war, zog er von dort weiter, um in ihren Städten zu lehren und zu predigen.
After finishing his instructions to his twelve disciples, Jesus left that place, in order to teach and to preach in the neighboring cities.
2 Johannes hatte im Gefängnis von den Taten Christi gehört. Da ließ er ihn durch seine Jünger fragen:
But when Johnheard, in the prison, what the Christ was doing, he sent by some of his disciples to ask him,
3 "Bist du es, der da kommen soll, oder sollen wir auf einen andern warten?"
"Are you the Coming One, or are we to look for someone else?"
4 Und Jesus sprach zu ihnen: "Gehet hin und berichtet dem Johannes, was ihr hört und seht:
"Go and tell John," was Jesus’ answer, "what you hear and see;
5 Blinde sehen, Lahme gehen, Aussätzige werden rein, Taube hören, Tote stehen auf, und Armen wird die Heilsbotschaft verkündet.
"the lame are walking, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf are hearing, the dead are being raised up, and the gospel is being preached to the poor.
6 Und selig ist, wer sich an mir nicht ärgert."
"And blessed is the man who finds no cause of stumbling in me."
7 Diese gingen weg. Und Jesus sprach zu den Scharen von Johannes: "Was wolltet ihr denn sehen, als ihr in die Steppe ginget? Etwa ein Schilfrohr, das vom Winde hin- und herbewegt wird?
As these men started to go away, Jesus began to speak to the throngs, about John.
8 Was wolltet ihr sehen, als ihr hinausginget: Wohl einen Menschen, angetan mit weichlichen Gewändern? - Seht, die sich weichlich kleiden, wohnen in Königsburgen.
"What did you go out into the desert to behold?" he asked; "A reed shaken by the wind? If not, what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, those who wear soft raiment dwell in kings’ palaces!
9 Ja, wozu seid ihr dann hinausgegangen? Einen Propheten zu sehen? Jawohl. Ich sage euch, mehr sogar als einen Propheten.
"But why did you go? To see a prophet? I tell you, yes, and more than a prophet;
10 Denn dieser ist es, von dem geschrieben steht: 'Siehe, ich sende meinen Engel vor dir her, daß er den Weg vor dir bereite'.
"for this is he of whom it is written. "Behold, I send my messenger before my face, And he will prepare thy road for thee.
11 Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Unter denen, die vom Weibe geboren sind, ist nie ein Größerer aufgetreten als Johannes der Täufer. Doch der Kleinste im Himmelreich ist größer als er.
"In solemn truth I tell you that there has not arisen among those born of women a greater than Johnthe Baptist; yet one of the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 Von den Tagen Johannes des Täufers an bis zu dieser Stunde wird das Himmelreich gestürmt, und nur wer stürmisch drängt, wird es an sich reißen.
"From the days of Johnthe Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by storm.
13 Alle Propheten und das Gesetz bis auf Johannes haben so geweissagt,
"For the prophets and the Law prophesied until John;
14 und wenn ihr es glauben wollt: Er ist Elias, der da kommen soll.
"and, if you are willing to receive it, he is the Elijah who was to come.
15 Wer Ohren hat, der höre!
"Let all who have ears, listen!
16 Mit wem kann ich wohl dieses Geschlecht vergleichen? Kindern ist es zu vergleichen, die auf dem Marktplatz sitzen und ihren Spielgenossen zurufen:
"To what shall I compare this generation? It is like little children sitting in the market-place, who call to the other children,
17 'Wir haben euch auf der Flöte vorgespielt, und ihr habt nicht getanzt; Klagelieder haben wir gesungen, und ihr habt nicht geweint.'
"saying. ‘We have piped to you and you have not danced; We have wailed, but you have not beaten your breasts.’
18 Johannes kam: er aß nicht und trank nicht; da hieß es: 'Er ist besessen'.
"For Johncame neither eating nor drinking, and they said, ‘He has a demon’;
19 Es kam der Menschensohn: Er ißt und trinkt; da heißt es: 'Seht den Schlemmer und den Säufer, den Freund der Zöllner und der Sünder.' Indes die Weisheit ward aus ihren Werken doch als gerecht anerkannt."
and the Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Lo, a glutton and a wine-drinker, a friend of tax-gatherers and sinners!’ Nevertheless, Wisdom is justified by her deeds."
20 Er machte alsdann jenen Städten bittern Vorbehalt, in denen die meisten seiner Wunder geschehen waren, weil sie trotzdem nicht Buße taten:
Then he began to upbraid the cities in which most of his mighty works had been done, because they had not repented.
21 "Wehe dir, Chorazain! Wehe dir, Bethsaida! Denn wenn in Tyrus und in Sidon die Wunder geschehen wären, die bei euch geschehen sind, sie hätten längst in Sack und Asche Buße getan.
"Woe unto you, Chorazin! Woe unto you, Bethsaida! Because if the mighty works which have been done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented, long ago, in sackcloth and ashes.
22 Jedoch ich sage euch: Tyrus und Sidon wird es am Tage des Gerichts erträglicher ergehen als euch.
"Moreover, I tell you it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the Day of Judgment, than for you.
23 Und du, Kapharnaum, bist du nicht bis in den Himmel erhoben worden? Bis in die Hölle hinab wirst du fahren. Denn wenn in Sodoma die Wunder geschehen wären, die in dir geschehen sind, stünde es heute noch. (Hadēs g86)
"And you too, Capernaum! Will you be exalted even to heaven? You shall go down to the Place of Death! For if the mighty works had been done in Sodom which have been done in you, it would have remained until this day. (Hadēs g86)
24 Jedoch ich sage euch: Dem Lande Sodoma wird es am Tage des Gerichts erträglicher ergehen als dir."
"I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the Day of Judgment, than for you."
25 Damals hob Jesus an und sprach: "Ich preise dich, Vater, Herr des Himmels und der Erde, daß du dies den Weisen und Klugen verborgen, Einfältigen es jedoch geoffenbart hast.
At that time Jesus answered and said. "I praise thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise and wary, and hast revealed them to the children.
26 Ja, Vater, so hat deine Güte es gefügt.
"Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in thy sight.
27 Mir ist von meinem Vater alles übergeben, und niemand kennt den Sohn als nur der Vater, und niemand kennt den Vater als allein der Sohn, und wem der Sohn es offenbaren will.
"Everything has been handed over to me by my Father; neither does any one know the Son, except the Father, nor any one know the Father except the Son, and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.
28 Kommt her zu mir alle, die ihr elend und beladen seid, ich werde euch erquicken.
"Come unto me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Nehmt mein Joch auf euch und lernt an mir, wie ich von Herzen sanft und voll Demut bin. So werdet ihr Ruhe finden für eure Seelen;
"Take my yoke upon you and learn of me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 denn mein Joch ist süß und meine Bürde leicht."
"For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
