Jona 3
1 Und nun erging das Wort des Herrn zum zweitenmal an Jonas:
And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying:
2 "Auf! Geh nach Ninive, der großen Stadt, und halte ihr die Predigt, die ich dir aufgetragen!"
'Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and make unto it the proclamation that I bid thee.'
3 So brach denn Jonas auf und ging nach Ninive gemäß dem Wort des Herrn, und Ninive war eine große Stadt, drei Tagereisen zum Beschauen.
So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city, of three days' journey.
4 Da fing nun Jonas an, in diese Stadt hineinzugehen, eine Tagesreise weit, und predigend zu rufen: "Noch vierzig Tage, dann wird Ninive zerstört".
And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he proclaimed, and said: 'Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.'
5 Da glaubten die Bewohner Ninives an Gott und riefen Fasten aus und zogen Bußgewänder an, vom Größten bis zum Kleinsten.
And the people of Nineveh believed God; and they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
6 Die Kunde kam auch zu dem Könige von Ninive; der stieg von seinem Thron herab und legte seinen Mantel fort, bedeckte sich mit einem Bußgewand und setzte sich in Asche
And the tidings reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
7 und ließ in seinem und im Namen seiner Großen den Herold ausrufen zu Ninive: "Die Menschen wie das Vieh, die Rinder und die Schafe sollen keinen Bissen kosten, nicht auf die Weide gehen und kein Wasser trinken!
And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying: 'Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing; let them not feed, nor drink water;
8 In Trauer gehen sollen Mensch und Vieh, und jene sollen Gott mit Macht anrufen! Ein jeder lasse jetzt von seinem schlimmen Wandel ab und von dem Frevel, der an seinen Händen klebt!
but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and beast, and let them cry mightily unto God; yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
9 Vielleicht läßt sich's die Gottheit wiederum gereuen und wendet sich von ihrer Zornesglut, daß wir nicht untergehn."
Who knoweth whether God will not turn and repent, and turn away from His fierce anger, that we perish not?'
10 Da sah die Gottheit, was sie taten, daß sie ihren schlimmen Wandel aufgegeben. So ließ die Gottheit sich des Unheils wiederum gereuen, das ihnen zuzufügen sie gedroht, und führte es nicht aus.
And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, which He said He would do unto them; and He did it not.
