Job 23

1 Darauf erwidert Job und spricht:

Then Job answered and said,

2 "Auch heut ist meine Klage bitter; ich lege allen Nachdruck auf mein Seufzen.

Even to day [is] my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning.

3 Ach, daß ich ihn zu finden wüßte, vor seinen Stuhl gelangen könnte

Oh that I knew where I might find him! [that] I might come [even] to his seat!

4 und dürfte meine Sache ihm vorlegen und mit Beweisen meinen Mund anfüllen

I would order [my] cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments.

5 und dürfte seine Antwort hören, vernehmen, was er mir zu sagen weiß!

I would know the words [which] he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me.

6 Ob er mit starken Gründen mit mir rechten wollte, ob er in Staunen mich versetzen könnte?

Will he plead against me with [his] great power? No; but he would put [strength] in me.

7 Da stünde dann ein braver Mann vor ihm; ich wäre dann für immer meiner Richter ledig.

There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.

8 Doch wenn ich ostwärts geh, so läßt er sich nicht finden, und westwärts, so gewahr ich ihn auch nicht.

Behold, I go forward, but he [is] not [there; ] and backward, but I cannot perceive him:

9 Und wäre er im Norden, ich sähe ihn doch nicht, und böge er nach Süden ab, ich schaute ihn doch nirgends.

On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold [him: ] he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see [him: ]

10 Mein Weg, auf dem ich stehe, ist ihm wohlbekannt, und prüft er mich, dann würde er wie Gold mich finden.

But he knoweth the way that I take: [when] he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.

11 Mein Fuß ging stets in seinen Gleisen; ich wankte nicht von seinem Weg.

My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined.

12 Von seiner Lippe Lehre wich ich nicht; und seines Mundes Worte hob ich ohnegleichen auf.

Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary [food].

13 Er ist nun wahrhaft einzigartig. Wer kann ihm wehren? Was er beschließt, das führt er aus.

But he [is] in one [mind], and who can turn him? and [what] his soul desireth, even [that] he doeth.

14 Er will mein Maß erfüllen, und solcherlei hat er noch viel bei sich.

For he performeth [the thing that is] appointed for me: and many such [things are] with him.

15 Drum bin ich über ihn erschrocken; mir graut vor ihm, wenn ich dran denke.

Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.

16 Gebrochen hat das Herz mir Gott; mit Schrecken hat mich der Allmächtige erfüllt.

For God maketh my heart soft, and the Almighty troubleth me:

17 Denn ob des Dunkels fühle ich mich schon vernichtet, dieweil in Düsterkeit gehüllt ich bin."

Because I was not cut off before the darkness, [neither] hath he covered the darkness from my face.
