Apostelgeschichte 19
1 Während Apollos in Korinth weilte, kam Paulus, nachdem er das Hochland durchwandert hatte, nach Ephesus. Dort traf er einige Jünger
While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland districts of Roman Asia, and went to Ephesus. There he found some disciples, of whom he asked,
2 und fragte sie: "Habt ihr den Heiligen Geist empfangen, als ihr gläubig wurdet?" Sie antworteten ihm: "Nein, wir haben nicht einmal gehört, daß es einen Heiligen Geist gebe."
“Did you, when you became believers in Christ, receive the Holy Spirit?” “No,” they answered, “we did not even hear that there was a Holy Spirit.”
3 Er fragte weiter: "Welche Taufe habt ihr denn empfangen?" Sie antworteten: "Die Taufe des Johannes."
“What then was your baptism?” Paul asked.
4 Paulus erwiderte: "Johannes taufte zur Buße und mahnte das Volk, an den zu glauben, der nach ihm komme, nämlich Jesus."
“John’s baptism was a baptism on repentance,” rejoined Paul, “and John told the people (speaking of the ‘one coming’ after him) that they should believe in him – that is in Jesus.”
5 Da sie dies gehört hatten, ließen sie sich auf den Namen des Herrn Jesus taufen.
On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus,
6 Als Paulus ihnen dann die Hände auflegte, kam der Heilige Geist auf sie herab, sie redeten in Sprachen und weissagten.
and, after Paul had placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit descended on them, and they began to speak in other languages and to preach.
7 Es waren im ganzen ungefähr zwölf Männer.
There were about twelve of them in all.
8 Er ging sodann in die Synagoge, predigte mit großem Freimut drei Monate hindurch und redete überzeugungsvoll vom Reiche Gottes.
Paul went to the synagogue there, and for three months spoke out fearlessly, giving addresses and trying to convince his hearers, about the kingdom of God.
9 Da aber einige in ihrem Unglauben hartnäckig verharrten, ja vor dem Volke die Lehre des Herrn lästerten, trennte er sich von ihnen und sonderte die Jünger ab. Er hielt nun täglich seine Lehrvorträge in dem Hörsaal eines gewissen Tyrannus.
Some of them, however, hardened their hearts and refused to believe, denouncing the Way before the people. So Paul left them and withdrew his disciples, and gave daily addresses in the lecture-hall of Tyrannus.
10 Das währte zwei Jahre lang, so daß alle Bewohner von Asien, Juden und Heiden, Gelegenheit hatten, das Wort des Herrn zu hören.
This went on for two years, so that all who lived in Roman Asia, Jews and Greeks alike, heard the Lord’s message.
11 Auch wirkte Gott durch die Hand des Paulus ungewöhnliche Wunder.
God did miracles of no ordinary kind by Paul’s hands;
12 Sogar Schweißtücher und Schürzen legte man von seinem Leib weg auf die Kranken, und die Krankheiten wichen von ihnen, und die bösen Geister fuhren aus.
so that people would carry home to the sick handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his body, and their diseases would leave them and the wicked spirits go out of them.
13 Einige der herumziehenden jüdischen Teufelsbeschwörer versuchten, über die von bösen Geistern Besessenen den Namen des Herrn Jesus anzurufen indem sie sagten: "Ich beschwöre euch bei Jesus, den Paulus verkündet."
An attempt was made by some itinerant Jews, who were exorcists, to use the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had wicked spirits in them. “I order you,” they would say, “by the Jesus, whom Paul preaches.”
14 Es waren die sieben Söhne des jüdischen Oberpriesters Skeuas, die es taten.
The seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this;
15 Aber der böse Geist erwiderte ihnen: "Jesus kenne ich, auch Paulus ist mir wohlbekannt; wer aber seid denn ihr?"
but the wicked spirit answered them, “Jesus I acknowledge, and Paul I know, but you – who are you?”
16 Damit stürzte sich der Mensch, in dem der böse Geist war, auf sie, überwältigte alle miteinander und ließ seine Macht an ihnen derart aus, daß sie nackt und wund aus jenem Hause flohen.
Then the man, in whom this wicked spirit was, sprang on them, mastered both of them, and so completely overpowered them, that they fled out of the house, stripped of their clothes, and wounded.
17 Dies wurde allen Juden und Heiden, die in Ephesus wohnten, bekannt, und Furcht kam über sie alle; der Name des Herrn Jesus aber kam hoch zu Ehren.
This incident came to the knowledge of all the Jews and Greeks living at Ephesus; they were all awe-struck, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in the highest honor.
18 Viele Gläubige kamen, bekannten und offenbarten, was sie getan hatten.
Many, too, of those who had become believers in Christ came with a full confession of their practices;
19 Viele aber, die Zauberkünste getrieben hatten, trugen ihre Bücher zusammen und verbrannten sie vor aller Augen. Man schätzte ihren Wert insgesamt auf fünfzigtausend Silberdrachmen.
while a number of people, who had practiced magic, collected their books and burnt them publicly; and on reckoning up the price of these, they found it amounted to fifty thousand silver coins.
20 So breitete sich das Wort des Herrn kräftig aus und erwies sich sehr wirksam.
So irresistibly did the Lord’s message spread and prevail.
21 Hierauf faßte Paulus den Plan, über Mazedonien und Achaia nach Jerusalem zu reisen. "Wenn ich dort gewesen bin", sprach er, "muß ich auch Rom sehen."
Sometime after these events Paul resolved to go through Macedonia and Greece, and then make his way to Jerusalem. “And after I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.”
22 Er sandte zwei seiner Gehilfen, Timotheus und Erastus, nach Mazedonien. Er selbst blieb noch einige Zeit in Asien.
So he sent to Macedonia two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, while he himself stayed for some time longer in Roman Asia.
23 Es entstand aber um jene Zeit ein ganz gewaltiger Aufruhr wegen der Lehre des Herrn.
Just about that time a great disturbance arose about the Way.
24 Ein Silberschmied namens Demetrius verschaffte nämlich durch Anfertigung von silbernen Artemistempelchen den Handwerkern großen Verdienst.
A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver models of the shrine of Artemis, and so gave a great deal of work to the artisans,
25 Nun rief er diese und auch die anderen Arbeiter, die dasselbe Geschäft hatten, zusammen und sprach: "Ihr Männer, wie ihr wißt, fließt unser Wohlstand aus diesem Gewerbe.
got these men together, as well as the workmen engaged in similar occupations, and said: “Men, you know that our prosperity depends on this work,
26 Nun aber seht und hört ihr, wie nicht allein in Ephesus, sondern fast im ganzen Asien dieser Paulus durch seine Überredungskunst viel Volk abwendig gemacht hat. Er behauptet nämlich, das seien gar keine Götter, die mit Händen gemacht sind.
and you see and hear that not only at Ephesus, but in almost the whole of Roman Asia, this Paul has convinced and won over great numbers of people, by his assertion that those Gods which are made by hands are not Gods at all.
27 Es droht aber nicht nur die Gefahr, daß unser Erwerbszweig zu Schaden komme, auch das Heiligtum der großen Göttin Artemis selbst wird in Verachtung kommen; ja, sie selbst verliert an ihrer Majestät, sie, die doch ganz Asien, ja, alle Welt verehrt."
So that not only is this business of ours likely to fall into discredit, but there is the further danger that the Temple of the great Goddess Artemis will be thought nothing of, and that she herself will be deprived of her splendor – though all Roman Asia and the whole world worship her.”
28 Da sie dies hörten, gerieten sie in Wut und schrien: "Groß ist die Artemis von Ephesus!"
When they heard this, the men were greatly enraged, and began shouting – “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
29 Die Aufregung teilte sich der ganzen Stadt mit: Alles stürmte ins Theater, und man schleppte die Mazedonier Gaius und Aristarchus, Reisegefährten des Paulus, mit dahin.
The commotion spread through the whole city, and the people rushed together into the amphitheater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, two Macedonians who were Paul’s traveling companions.
30 Paulus wollte in die Volksversammlung gehen, aber die Jünger ließen ihn nicht fort.
Paul wished to go into the amphitheater and face the people, but the disciples would not let him,
31 Auch einige mit ihm befreundete höhere Beamte ließen ihn dringend bitten, sich nicht ins Theater zu begeben.
while some of the chief religious officials of the province, who were friendly to him, sent repeated entreaties to him not to trust himself inside.
32 Hier schrien nun die einen dies, die anderen das; denn es herrschte in der Versammlung eine heillose Verwirrung, und die meisten wußten gar nicht, weshalb sie zusammengekommen waren.
Meanwhile some were shouting one thing and some another, for the Assembly was all in confusion, most of those present not even knowing why they had met.
33 Da beredete man aus der Menge einen Alexander, den die Juden vorschoben. Alexander winkte mit der Hand und wollte sich vor dem Volke verteidigen.
But some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom several of the Jewish leaders had pushed to the front, and he waved his hand to show that he wanted to speak in their defense to the people.
34 Als man aber erkannte, daß er ein Jude war, schrien sie alle wie aus einem Munde fast zwei Stunden lang: "Groß ist die Artemis von Ephesus!"
However, when they recognized him as a Jew, one cry broke from them all, and they continued shouting for two hours – “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
35 Endlich beschwichtigte der Stadtschreiber die Menge und hielt folgende Ansprache: "Epheser! Wer in aller Welt wüßte nicht, daß die Stadt Ephesus die Hüterin ist des Tempels der großen Artemis und ihres Bildes, das vom Himmel gefallen ist?
When the Recorder had succeeded in quieting the crowd, he said, “People of Ephesus, who is there, I ask you, who needs to be told that this city of Ephesus is the Warden of the Temple of the great Artemis, and of the statue which fell down from Zeus?
36 Dies ist unbestritten. Also müßt ihr Ruhe bewahren und dürft nichts Übereiltes tun.
As these are undeniable facts, you ought to keep calm and do nothing rash;
37 Ihr habt diese Männer vorgeführt, die weder Tempelräuber noch Lästerer unserer Göttin sind.
for you have brought these men here, though they are neither robbers of Temples nor blasphemers of our Goddess.
38 Wenn Demetrius und seine Zunftgenossen Klage wider jemanden zu führen haben, so werden dafür Gerichtstage abgehalten und sind Gerichtsherren da; dort mögen sie einander verklagen.
If, however, Demetrius and the artisans who are acting with him have a charge to make against anyone, there are court days and there are Magistrates; let both parties take legal proceedings.
39 Habt ihr aber noch eine weitere Beschwerde, so mag sie in einer regelrechten Volksversammlung erledigt werden.
But if you want anything more, it will have to be settled in the regular Assembly.
40 Wir laufen nämlich noch Gefahr, wegen der heutigen Vorkommnisse des Aufruhrs angeklagt zu werden, da gar kein Anlaß vorhanden ist, mit dem wir diesen Auflauf rechtfertigen können."
For I tell you that we are in danger of being proceeded against for today’s riot, there being nothing to account for it; and in that case we will be at a loss to give any reason for this disorderly gathering.”
41 Nach diesen Worten löste er die Versammlung auf.
With these words he dismissed the Assembly.
