1 Johannes 4
1 Geliebte! Trauet nicht jedem Geiste! Prüft die Geister, ob sie aus Gott sind. Denn viele falsche Propheten sind in die Welt hinausgegangen.
Dear friends, do not trust every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
2 Daran erkennt man den Geist aus Gott: jeder Geist, der bekennt: Jesus Christus ist im Fleische gekommen, ist aus Gott.
This is the way to recognize the Spirit of God: those who acknowledge Jesus Christ as come in the flesh have God’s Spirit,
3 Doch jeder Geist, der Jesus nicht bekennt, ist auch nicht aus Gott. Es ist vielmehr der Geist des Antichristen, von dem ihr vernommen habt, daß er kommt; ja, er ist schon in der Welt.
while a spirit that doesn’t acknowledge Jesus isn’t from God. Instead it is the spirit of the antichrist; you have heard that it was coming, and it is now already in the world!
4 Doch ihr, o Kinder, seid aus Gott, ihr habt jene überwunden; denn er, der in euch ist, ist stärker als jener in der Welt.
You, my children, come from God, and you have successfully resisted such people as these, because he who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
5 Sie sind von der Welt; deshalb reden sie nach Art der Welt; es hört auch die Welt auf sie.
Those people belong to the world and therefore they speak as the world speaks, and the world listens to them.
6 Wir aber sind aus Gott. Wer Gott erkennt, der hört auf uns; nur wer nicht aus Gott ist, der hört auch nicht auf uns. Daran erkennen wir den Geist der Wahrheit und den Geist der Verwirrung.
We come from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; the person who does not come from God does not listen to us. This is how we distinguish the spirit of truth and the spirit of deception.
7 Geliebte! Lasset uns einander lieben! Die Liebe stammt aus Gott, und jeder, der liebt, ist aus Gott geboren und versteht Gott.
Dear friends, let us love one another, because love comes from God and everyone who loves is a child of God and knows God.
8 Doch wer nicht liebt, hat Gott nicht verstanden: Gott ist Liebe.
Those who do not love know nothing of God, for God is love.
9 Dadurch hat sich die Liebe Gottes unter uns geoffenbart, daß Gott seinen Eingeborenen Sohn in diese Welt gesandt hat, damit wir durch ihn leben.
This is how God showed his love among us: he sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.
10 Und darin eben liegt die Liebe, nicht, daß wir Gott geliebt haben, sondern daß er uns geliebt und daß er seinen Sohn als Sühne für unsere Sünden gesandt hat.
This is what love is: it is not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
11 Geliebte! Wenn uns Gott so sehr geliebt hat, dann sind auch wir verpflichtet, einander zu lieben.
Dear friends, since God loved us in this way, we should love one another.
12 Noch nie hat jemand Gott geschaut, doch wenn wir einander lieben, dann bleibt Gott in uns, und seine Liebe ist in uns vollendet.
No one has ever seen God, but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love reaches perfection within us.
13 Daran mögen wir erkennen, daß wir in ihm bleiben und er in uns verbleibt, daß er von seinem Geist uns gegeben hat.
We know that we live in him, and he lives in us, because he has given us a measure of his Spirit.
14 Wir haben es gesehen und bezeugen es, daß der Vater seinen Sohn als Weltheiland gesandt hat.
Moreover, we have seen for ourselves and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.
15 Wer nun bekennt: Jesus ist der Sohn Gottes, in dem bleibt Gott und er in Gott.
Whoever acknowledges that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, God lives in them, and they live in God.
16 Und wir haben erkannt und der Liebe geglaubt, die Gott zu uns hat. Gott ist Liebe. Wer in der Liebe bleibt, der bleibt in Gott, und Gott bleibt in ihm.
And so we have come to know and believe the love which God has for us. God is love; and whoever lives in love lives in God, and God lives in them.
17 Darin vollendet sich bei uns die Liebe, daß wir voll Zuversicht für den Tag des Gerichtes verblieben; denn so wie jener sind auch wir in dieser Welt.
This is the way love has reached its perfection among us, so that we may have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like Christ.
18 Furcht gibt es bei der Liebe nicht; denn ist die Liebe ganz vollendet, dann wird die Furcht verdrängt. Die Furcht hat Strafe in sich, und darum, ist, wer fürchtet, in der Liebe noch nicht vollendet.
There is no fear in love; perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment. So anyone who is afraid has not reached perfection in love.
19 Wir lieben, weil er uns zuvor geliebt hat.
We love, because God first loved us.
20 Wenn einer sagt: "Ich liebe Gott", doch seinen Bruder haßt, der ist ein Lügner. Wenn einer nämlich seinen Bruder, den er sieht, nicht liebt, der kann auch Gott nicht lieben, den er nicht gesehen hat.
If someone says ‘I love God,’ and yet hates others, they are a liar. For the person who does not love their brother or sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.
21 Dieses Gebot haben wir von ihm: Wer Gott liebt, muß auch seinen Bruder lieben.
Indeed, we have this command from Christ: Those who love God must also love each other.
