Psalm 40

1 Dem Sangmeister. Ein Psalm Davids.

For the chief musician. A psalm of David. I waited patiently for Yahweh; he listened to me and heard my cry.

2 Voll Sehnsucht hab ich auf Jahwe geharrt: / Er neigte sich zu mir und hörte mein Schrein.

He brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and he set my feet on a rock and made my steps secure.

3 Er zog mich aus der verderblichen Grube, / Aus tiefem Schlamm / Und stellte meine Füße auf einen Fels, / Machte meine Schritte sicher.

He has put a new song in my mouth, praise to our God. Many will see it and honor him and will trust in Yahweh.

4 Er legte mir ein neues Lied in den Mund, / Einen Lobgesang für unsern Gott. / Viele schauen's und schauern / Und trauen auf Jahwe.

Blessed is the man who makes Yahweh his trust and does not honor the proud or those who turn away from him to lies.

5 "Heil dem, der sein Vertrauen auf Jahwe setzt / Und sich nicht wendet zu Stolzen und Lügenhaften!"

Many, Yahweh my God, are the wonderful deeds that you have done, and your thoughts which are about us cannot be numbered; if I declared and spoke of them, they would be more than could be counted.

6 Viel hast du getan, o Jahwe, mein Gott, / An Wundern und Plänen zu unserm Heil / Dir ist nichts gleich! / Ich möchte sie kundtun, davon reden, / Aber sie sind unzählbar.

You have no delight in sacrifice or offering, but you have opened my ears; you have not required burnt offerings or sin offerings.

7 Schlachtopfer und Speisopfer willst du nicht, / Doch Ohren hast du mir gegraben. / Brandopfer und Sündopfer forderst du nicht.

Then said I, “See, I have come; it is written about me in the scroll of the document.

8 Da sprach ich: "Sieh, ich komme / Mit der Rolle des Buchs, mir zur Weisung geschrieben.

I delight to do your will, my God; your laws are in my heart.”

9 Deinen Willen zu tun, mein Gott, begehr ich, / In meinem Herzen ist dein Gesetz."

I have proclaimed good news of your righteousness in the great assembly; Yahweh, you know that my lips have not kept back from doing this.

10 Die Freudenbotschaft deines Heils verkünd ich in großer Gemeinde. / Sieh, meine Lippen verschließ ich nicht: / Jahwe, du weißt es.

I have not concealed your righteousness in my heart; I have declared your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your covenant faithfulness or your trustworthiness from the great assembly.

11 Deine Gerechtigkeit verberg ich nicht in meinem Herzen, / Von deiner Wahrhaftigkeit und Hilfe rede ich, / Deine Huld und Treue verhehl ich nicht in der großen Gemeinde.

Do not keep back your acts of mercy from me, Yahweh; let your covenant faithfulness and your trustworthiness always preserve me.

12 Du, Jahwe, wirst dein Erbarmen mir nicht entziehn, / Deine Huld und Treue werden mich allzeit schirmen.

Troubles that cannot be numbered surround me; my iniquities have caught up with me so that I am no longer able to see anything; they are more than the hairs on my head, and my heart has failed me.

13 Denn es umringen mich Leiden ohne Zahl, / Meine Sünden erfassen mich unübersehbar, / Zahlreicher als meines Hauptes Haar, / Und mein Mut entfällt mir.

Be pleased, Yahweh, to rescue me; hurry to help me, Yahweh.

14 Willige, Jahwe, mich zu retten, / Eile mir, Jahwe, zu Hilfe!

Let them be ashamed and completely disappointed who pursue my life to take it away. Let them be turned back and brought to dishonor, those who delight in hurting me.

15 Beschämt und enttäuscht laß alle werden, / Die mir nach dem Leben trachten, es wegzuraffen! / Mit Schimpf laß alle entweichen, / Die da mein Unglück wollen!

Let them be shocked because of their shame, those who say to me, “Aha, aha!”

16 Erstarren mögen ob ihrer Schande, / Die (schadenfroh) über mich rufen: "Ha, ha!"

But may all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; let everyone who loves your salvation say continually, “May Yahweh be praised.”

17 Frohlocken laß aber und dein sich freun / Alle, die nach dir fragen. / Laß immerdar rufen: "Groß ist Jahwe!" / Alle, die dein Heil lieben! Bin ich auch elend und arm: / Adonái sorget für mich. / Mein Beistand und Retter bist du. / Mein Gott, verzieh deine Hilfe nicht!

I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinks about me. You are my help and you come to my rescue; do not delay, my God.
