Psalm 129

1 Ein Stufenlied. / "Oft haben sie mich bedrängt von meiner Jugend an", / So möge Israel sprechen,

Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:

2 "Oft haben sie mich bedrängt von meiner Jugend an, / Doch sie haben mich nicht überwältigt.

Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me.

3 Auf meinem Rücken haben Pflüger gepflügt / Und ihre Furchen lang gezogen.

The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows.

4 Doch Jahwe, der Gerechte, / Er hat zerhaun der Frevler Strick."

Yhwh is righteous: he hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.

5 Zuschanden werden und rückwärtsweichen / Sollen alle, die Zion hassen.

Let them all be confounded and turned back that hate Zion.

6 Sie sollen dem Gras auf den Dächern gleichen: / Das ist schon dürr, noch ehe man's ausrauft.

Let them be as the grass upon the housetops, which withereth afore it groweth up:

7 Damit füllt der Schnitter nicht seine Hand / Noch seinen Arm der Garbenbinder.

Wherewith the mower filleth not his hand; nor he that bindeth sheaves his bosom.

8 Die vorübergehen sagen auch nicht: / "Jahwes Segen sei über euch!" / Wir aber haben euch in Jahwes Namen gesegnet.

Neither do they which go by say, The blessing of Yhwh be upon you: we bless you in the name of Yhwh.
