Ruth 1
1 Au temps où les juges gouvernaient, sous l’un d’entre eux il arriva une famine dans le pays. Et un homme partit de Bethléhem de Juda, et s’en alla avec sa femme et ses deux fils au pays des Moabites.
It happened in the days when the judges judged, that there was a famine in the land. A certain man of Bethlehem Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.
2 Il s’appelait Elimélech, et sa femme Noémi. L’un de ses fils s’appelait Mahalon et l’autre Chélion; et ils étaient Ephrathéens de Bethléhem de Juda. Etant donc venus au pays des Moabites, ils y demeurèrent.
The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Kilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab, and continued there.
3 Elimélech, mari de Noémi, mourut ensuite, et elle resta avec ses fils,
Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons.
4 qui épousèrent des filles de Moab, dont l’une s’appelait Orpha et l’autre Ruth. Après avoir passé dix ans dans ce pays-là,
And they took for themselves wives from the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they lived there about ten years.
5 ils moururent tous deux, savoir Mahalon et Chélion; et Noémi demeura seule, ayant perdu son mari et ses deux enfants.
Mahlon and Kilion both died, and the woman was bereaved of her two children and of her husband.
6 Elle se leva donc pour retourner dans sa patrie avec ses deux belles-filles, qui étaient de Moab; car elle avait appris que le Seigneur avait regardé son peuple, et qu’il leur avait donné de quoi manger.
Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that Jehovah had visited his people in giving them bread.
7 Elle sortit donc avec ses deux brus de cette terre étrangère; et, étant déjà en chemin pour retourner au pays de Juda,
She went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah.
8 elle leur dit: Allez dans la maison de votre mère; que le Seigneur use de sa bonté envers vous, comme vous en avez usé envers ceux qui sont morts et envers moi.
Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, "Go, return each of you to her mother's house. May Jehovah deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead, and with me.
9 Qu’il vous fasse trouver votre repos dans la maison des maris que vous prendrez. Elle les baisa ensuite; et ses deux brus se mirent à pleurer, et élevant la voix, elles lui dirent:
Jehovah grant you that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband." Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice, and wept.
10 Nous irons avec vous vers votre peuple.
They said to her, "No, but we will return with you to your people."
11 Noémi leur répondit: Retournez, mes filles; pourquoi venez-vous avec moi? Ai-je encore des enfants dans mon sein pour vous donner lieu d’attendre de moi des maris?
Naomi said, "Go back, my daughters. Why do you want to go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
12 Retournez, mes filles, et allez-vous-en; car je suis déjà usée de vieillesse, et hors d’état de rentrer dans les liens du mariage. Quand même je pourrais concevoir cette nuit et enfanter des fils,
Go back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, 'I have hope,' if I should even have a husband tonight, and should also bear sons;
13 si vous vouliez attendre qu’ils fussent grands et en âge de se marier, vous seriez devenues vieilles avant de les pouvoir épouser. Non, mes filles, ne faites point cela, je vous prie; car votre affliction ne fait qu’accroître la mienne, et la main du Seigneur s’est appesantie sur moi.
would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, for it grieves me much for your sakes, for the hand of Jehovah has gone out against me."
14 Elles élevèrent donc encore leur voix, et recommencèrent à pleurer. Orpha baisa sa belle-mère, et s’en retourna; mais Ruth s’attacha à Noémi.
They lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law and returned to her people, but Ruth clung to her.
15 Noémi lui dit: Voilà ta sœur qui est retournée à son peuple et à ses dieux; va-t’en avec elle.
She said, "Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people, and to her god. Follow your sister-in-law.
16 Ruth lui répondit: Ne vous opposez point à moi en me portant à vous quitter et à m’en aller; car en quelque lieu que vous alliez, j’irai; et partout où vous demeurerez, j’y demeurerai aussi: votre peuple sera mon peuple, et votre Dieu sera mon Dieu.
Ruth said, "Do not urge me to leave you, and to return from following after you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay; your people shall be my people, and your God my God;
17 La terre où vous mourrez me verra mourir, et je serai ensevelie où vous le serez. Que Dieu me traite dans toute sa rigueur, si jamais rien me sépare de vous, que la mort seule.
where you die, will I die, and there will I be buried. Jehovah do so to me, and more also, if anything but death part you and me."
18 Noémi, voyant donc Ruth dans une résolution si déterminée d’aller avec elle, ne voulut plus s’y opposer ni lui persuader d’aller retrouver les siens.
When she saw that she was steadfastly minded to go with her, she left off speaking to her.
19 Alors elles partirent ensemble, et elles arrivèrent à Bethléhem. Dès qu’elles y furent entrées, le bruit en courut de toutes parts, et les femmes disaient: Voilà cette Noémi.
So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. It happened, when they had come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they asked, "Is this Naomi?"
20 Noémi leur dit: Ne m’appelez plus Noémi, c’est-à-dire belle; mais appelez-moi Mara, c’est-à-dire amère; parce que le Tout-Puissant m’a toute remplie d’amertume.
She said to them, "Do not call me Naomi. Call me Marah; for Shaddai has dealt very bitterly with me.
21 Je suis sortie d’ici pleine, et le Seigneur m’y ramène vide. Pourquoi donc m’appelez-vous Noémi, puisque le Seigneur m’a humiliée, et que le Tout-Puissant m’a comblée d’affliction?
I went out full, and Jehovah has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since Jehovah has testified against me, and Shaddai has afflicted me?"
22 Noémi quitta donc avec Ruth la Moabite, sa belle-fille, la terre étrangère où elle avait demeuré, et elle revint à Bethléhem lorsqu’on commençait à couper les orges.
So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem at the beginning of barley harvest.
